Palmer is Chelsea's spark again in Conference League success

TimesLIVE29-05-2025
Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer's quiet second half of the season produced one goal in 22 games and a handful of assists but when they needed his creativity and guile the playmaker delivered a masterful performance to help them win the Conference League.
Chelsea trailed Real Betis 1-0 at halftime in the final on Wednesday having been subdued in the opening 45 minutes by the energy and pressing game of their opponents.
Chelsea needed a way back and Palmer provided two perfect assists in five minutes to swing the momentum in their favour.
It was a quick-fire double blow from which Betis could not recover as Chelsea romped to a 4-1 win.

The England midfielder fashioned a superb cross from the right that was perfectly placed for Enzo Fernandez to head home, before his quick feet and movement shook off a defender and created the space to cross for Nicolas Jackson to make it 2-1.
'We picked up the intensity and put in a good performance in the second half,' Palmer said. 'I was sick of getting the ball and just going backwards and sideways.
'The first [goal] there was a bit of space and I saw Enzo running. Second one, same again. I feel like we showed good character again to make the comeback.'
His contribution is certainly appreciated by teammates.

'If you saw what he did today it was crazy. Two [assists for] goals that completely changed the game. That's what he does,' Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo said.
Palmer's only goal since mid-January was a late spot-kick against Liverpool, but his ability to find the right pass, or pick a moment to up the tempo, makes him a man for the big occasion.
The 23-year-old is famously short on words in interviews, but certainly not on talent and influence within this young Chelsea squad.
If they are to progress and challenge for the Premier League title, he is the player manager Enzo Maresca will build the team around. On a frenzied night in Wroclaw, when cool heads and quality were needed, Palmer showed just why.
'The bad run he had this season is going to make him a better player, no doubt. In the last third, he can decide games with a goal or an assist. And the two assists were very nice,' Maresca said.

WATCH: Alberton's Cyra Elliot wins big at a golf competition in Ireland

Alberton's Cyra Elliot (11) recently won big at a golf competition in Ireland. Cyra started playing golf at seven years old, and she has been going strong ever since. Her journey started at the US Kid Golf tournament. 'Once we saw the potential, I entered her into a US Kid Golf tournament, and she thrived. In her first season with Us Kids Golf, she placed first and played her two final rounds at the Gary Player Country Club, Sun City, and won the girls' nine-to-10 age group,' recalls Cyra's father, Dale Elliot. Cyra's first coach was Chantel Smit, who honed the skills of the young golfer. Then came new coach Tandi McCallum, who is a well-known Sunshine and European tour player. McCallum's guidance was a huge opportunity for Cyra to move to international golf tournaments. McCallum pushed Cyra to new heights, resulting in an invitation to train through the John Dickson Golf Academy. Commenting on Cyra's move to John Dickson, Dale said, 'They saw her potential and believed that her work ethic and personality suited the game of golf. She has been with them for two years, and with the help and guidance of McCallum, we have seen a huge progression in her golfing ability, and it all boils down to her passion for the game.' In 2024, Cyra started competing in SA Kids golf tournaments, where she dominated her age group. This opened a door to play in the Junior African Challenge 2024, which was held at San Lameer, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). The three-day tournament saw her win the overall title in her age group. Cyra's winning streak last year secured her an invitation to one of the biggest world golf junior tournaments, the Irish Champion of Champions, which is held at the Nick Faldo Lough Erne golf estate. Golfers from 45 different countries, between the ages of seven and 19, gather at the golf estate and compete for the number one spot. Cyra played amazingly and won by five shots, scoring 71, 79. 83 with a total of 233 strokes, and was crowned the champion of champions for girls and the 2025 winner. 'This was an incredible achievement, especially being her first time playing golf in another country. Cyra leans on the love and support of the family, especially from her sister Shaye, who is always there through the highs and the lows of golf,' said Dale proudly.

Corner kings Arsenal on top, Manchester United the better team overall despite missing good chances

Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori headed home an early corner, aided by a weak challenge from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, to earn a 1-0 victory at Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, spoiling the hosts' season opener. Despite a cast of new faces, Mikel Arteta's visitors proved they are lethal from set pieces with Calafiori netting in the 13th minute. Arsenal's William Saliba backed into Bayindir, who batted the ball with one hand into the path of Italian Calafiori for an easy close-range header. United were otherwise the better team, with close-season signings Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu missing good chances. The home side had Arsenal pinned back for most of the second period and kept keeper David Raya busy, forcing him into a diving save to stop Mbeumo's powerful header. Set piece specialists Arsenal have scored 31 league goals from corners since the start of the 2023-24 season, at least 11 more than any other team, and three of their last four league goals against United have been from corner kicks.

Arsenal capitalise on Bayindir error to beat Man United

The Red Devils had 22 shots and enjoyed over 60 percent possession. Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim said his side can beat anyone in the Premier League despite beginning their season with a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal at Old Trafford. The Italian defender pounced on a mistake by United's stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. ALSO READ: Chelsea draw blank in Palace stalemate The Red Devils had 22 shots and enjoyed over 60 percent possession. But an expensively-assembled new £200 million ($271 million) forward line of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and substitute Benjamin Sesko failed to find a way through against the Premier League's best defence for the past two seasons. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. But Amorim insisted the performance showed tangible signs of progress, even if it was not reflected in the scoreline. 'We need to win games but that was completely different to last season,' said the Portuguese coach. 'We were the better team. In the end we lose the game, but really proud of the performance. 'We proved today we can win any game in the Premier League, against a great team like Arsenal.' – 'Big result' – After finishing second for the past three seasons, the pressure is on Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to deliver the club's first league title since 2004. The Spaniard was left to depend on his reliable defence and goalkeeper David Raya to secure a huge three points as the visitors never got going as in attack. 'Big result,' said Arteta. 'First game of the season at Old Trafford when you feel they are building something.' He conceded his side will have to be much better if they are to rival Liverpool and Manchester City for the title. 'It certainly gives you momentum and confidence when you are not at your (top) standards. 'Today we weren't, to be fair. The team has to find that resilience through nine, 10 months of the season. 'We have to improve a lot of things and that will happen very soon.' The new arrivals have lifted the mood around Old Trafford and the majority of the 75,000 fans in attendance could at least leave encouraged by the display of Amorim's men. Cunha and Mbeumo unsettled Arsenal's normally unflappable centre-back pairing of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba early on. United were undone by an error from Bayindir, deputising for the injured Andre Onana. The Turkish international meekly flapped at an inswinging Declan Rice corner on 13 minutes, allowing Calafiori to head into an unguarded net. Patrick Dorgu came closest to a United reply before half-time with a powerful effort from distance that hit the post. Mbeumo and Cunha saw tame efforts easily saved by Raya, while the Spaniard did brilliantly to divert another Cunha shot across the goal. Arsenal had held interest in Sesko for well over a year before instead pursuing Viktor Gyokeres as the solution at number nine. The Swede had a quiet Premier League debut and was replaced before the hour by Kai Havertz. Sesko made his entrance moments later, to a hero's welcome after rejecting the advances of Newcastle for the lure of the 20-time English champions. Mbeumo's powerful header was expertly clawed out by Raya. Arsenal held firm to keep up with Liverpool and City, who both scored four goals to win on the opening weekend of the campaign.
