PKR election, a fight among loyal friends - Anwar
TAWAU (May 11): The 2025 PKR election should be considered a 'fight between loyal friends' of the party, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Therefore, Anwar, who is also PKR president, said that all candidates involved in the election should be well-mannered so that the spirit of brotherhood among party members remains intact.
'This election is between loyal friends, many of whom are reformist figures. Therefore, we have to be careful not to overdo it because we want (this election) to be embraced as a strength,' he said.
He said this when met by reporters after chairing the Sabah PKR State Leadership Council (MPN) meeting here on Sunday.
Anwar also reminded contesting party supporters not to 'overdo it' because it could worsen the situation.
'This (PKR) brotherhood must be strengthened…once the Congress (PKR National Congress) is over, we must work as a cohesive team,' he said.
The party's nomination which ended on Friday saw Anwar unchallenged for the president post, while for the deputy president position, Nurul Izzah Anwar will face incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who is also the Minister of Economy.
For the vice president posts, 12 members have submitted their nominations, including four incumbents, namely Nik Nazmi Nik Mat (Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability), Chang Lih Kang (Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation), Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan) and Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (Menteri Besar of Selangor).
The Finance Minister's political secretary Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim was unopposed for Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) chief while Fadhlina Sidek (Education Minister) and Rodziah Ismail (Ampang Member of Parliament) are vying for the position of PKR Wanita chief.
The PKR National Congress including the AMK Congress and the Wanita Congress is scheduled to be held from May 22 to 24 in Johor Bahru with May 23 set as polling day.-Bernama

Philippines, US and Japan push to advance trilateral economic ties
MANILA (Bernama-PNA): The Philippines, the United States, and Japan are focused on developing their trilateral economic partnership to complement their growing security ties, the US State Department has announced. According to the Philippine News Agency (PNA), the foreign ministers of the three states - Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi - discussed the plan and the need to unlock more private sector investments in their flagship Luzon Economic Corridor. They met on the sidelines of the ASEAN-related foreign ministers' meeting in Malaysia on Thursday (July 10), the statement said. The State Department said Rubio highlighted Manila's wealth in critical minerals and stressed the need to diversify critical mineral supply chains. The officials proposed advancing trilateral cooperation in the Philippines on cyber security, energy (including civil nuclear energy), and investments in reliable and secure telecommunications networks. They concluded with an agreement to hold sectoral trilateral discussions at the senior officials' level in the coming months to advance their shared desire for peace and security in the region. In the same meeting, the officials reaffirmed their interest in advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific and agreed to coordinate cooperation on maritime security, including through Maritime Cooperative Activities, trilateral military exercises, and capacity building and assistance for the Philippine Coast Guard and other Philippine maritime authorities. -- Bernama-PNA

Ahmad Maslan: Unity government stable even if 9 PKR MPs turn independent
KUALA TERENGGANU: The unity government under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's leadership will remain stable even if nine PKR members of parliament decide to become independents. Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan was referring to the nine PKR MPs, including former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who recently called on the government to establish a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the appointment of top judicial positions. Ahmad, who is also deputy works minister, said the unity government currently holds 153 parliamentary seats. "All parties contesting in a general election must secure more than two-thirds, or at least 112 parliamentary seats, to form a government. "Even if nine PKR MPs decide to leave the party and become independents, the government remains strong, and Anwar's position as prime minister will not be affected. "However, we are confident that Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, and the other seven PKR MPs will not leave the party to become independents," he said. He was speaking at the Santai Komuniti Madani programme in Kampung Batu Rakit here today. Ahmad, who is also the Pontian MP, was commenting on calls by 11 PKR division chiefs in Kedah and 19 in Johor for immediate disciplinary action and suspension of the nine MPs following their recent press conference urging the government to establish the RCI. Ahmad also said that Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, who is the former natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, are leaders of integrity who prioritise national stability. He said he believed Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, who are the MPs for Pandan and Setiawangsa respectively, would not leave the party because they value political stability and do not want to see the country suffer further political turmoil. Ahmad said both leaders, known for their stance on stability, do not want a repeat of the political upheaval between 2018 and 2022, which saw multiple changes of prime ministers and caused setbacks for the nation. On Monday, nine PKR MPs urged the government to establish an RCI to investigate alleged interference in judicial appointments and court decisions, an issue that has raised concerns over the independence of the judiciary. Besides Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, others present at the press conference included Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail, Subang MP Wong Chen, Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan, Balik Pulau MP Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, and Ledang MP Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh. Two other PKR MPs who did not attend the press conference but supported the call for judicial reform were Sungai Siput MP S. Kesavan and Batu Pahat MP Onn Abu Bakar.
