Turkey's Zorlu says CEO resigns after probe into Ramadan email
On Friday, Ergun Guler, chief executive of electronics firm Vestel (VESTL.IS), opens new tab, which is a subsidiary of Zorlu Holding, sent a message to employees celebrating the start of Ramadan, which began on Saturday.
Koksal later sent an internal email saying the company only celebrated Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha officially, not Ramadan, and that it wanted to maintain a secular stance as it worked to become a multinational corporation, with employees from various beliefs and origins.
After images of that email were circulated by local media and on social media, an Istanbul prosecutor's office launched an investigation into the issue, the state-owned Anadolu news agency said, adding that Koksal was detained on Saturday for "obstructing the exercise of freedom of belief, thought, and expression".
In a statement, Zorlu Holding later said it ackowledged the "sensitivity" caused by the "internal argument over management principles", and that Koksal had resigned as of March 1.
"It is known to the public that Zorlu Holding has been an institution with family values and business ethics since 1953, and has been integrated with the national and spiritual values of our country," it said.
"As the Zorlu Group, we convey our sadness due to what has happened to all our stakeholders and the public," it added.
The conglomerate operates in the energy, real estate, electronics, white goods and textile sectors.
The investigation into Koksal comes after a battle between President Tayyip Erdogan and Turkey's biggest business group TUSIAD last month over comments from executives in the group criticising a government crackdown on opposition figures.

Macron appears at first to thank Trump for his peace efforts and for hosting the latest round of talks in Washington. Seconds later, Trump says: "I will set up a trilat". As the general chit-chat continues to flood the White House walls, Trump makes another stark revelation to Macron. He can be heard saying: "He wants to make a deal with me as crazy as it sounds." Trump appears to be referencing Putin with the comment as he also said he had spoken to Vlad indirectly earlier in the day. Another of Trump's hot mic moments came as he spoke with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Finnish President Alexander Stubb. Pointing towards Stubb, Trump was overheard telling Meloni "he's a very good golfer you know". Trump and Zelensky speak in Oval Office kicking off high stakes summit as Ukrainian wears his SUIT To which Meloni replied: "I know, I know. But he says you always win." The two conversations followed a seemingly positive day for future peace talks. Trump vowed to "secure" Ukraine as he hosted a string of powerful world leaders. The US President outlined security guarantees as he declared the "war is going to end". Trump and Zelensky kicked off the summit with a friendly handshake before heading into the Oval Office for one-on-one talks. There he told reporters: "The war is going to end. This gentleman wants it to end, Vladimir Putin wants it to end, I think the whole world is tired of it, and we're going to get it ended." Zelensky, who wore a black military-style suit, nodded along as Trump spoke before adding he is ready to sit down with the despot and shake hands over a peace agreement. An upbeat Zelensky started the talks by directly thanking Trump and the US for their role in peace talks. He also handed President Trump a letter from his own wife intended for Melania Trump. Zelensky went on to say: "We need to stop this war to stop Russia, and we need support, American and European partners. "We will do our best with this. We show that we are strong people and we supported the idea of President Trump to stop this war." These remarks were echoed by all seven European leaders who spoke with Trump following his Zelensky talks. The leaders of France, Finland Germany and Italy alongside the heads of Nato and the EU all said they will always be on the side of Ukraine and that the conflict with Russia must end. Each one called for security guarantees and said a meeting with Putin and Zelensky must come next. Trump agreed with the calls and said he hopes for "long-term" peace. 5 Trump shakes hands with Zelensky during a meeting in the Oval Office Credit: Getty

Zelenskiy dons more formal attire for high-stakes meeting with Trump
WASHINGTON, Aug 18 (Reuters) - The last time Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited the White House, his olive green military-style outfit drew scorn from U.S. President Donald Trump, who wears suits every day. Zelenskiy's garb at that February meeting featured in a disastrous session with Trump in which the two leaders bickered and the Ukrainian president was escorted out of the White House early, without lunch. On Monday, with his country facing pressure to accept a peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years, Zelenskiy showed up for his talks with Trump wearing more formal attire. The black-on-black ensemble, sans tie, wasn't exactly a suit, but it seemed to please Trump all the same. A reporter who had asked Zelenskiy in February why he was not wearing a suit complimented the Ukraine leader on the attire he chose for his latest Oval Office session with Trump. "You look fabulous in that suit," the reporter said. Trump chimed in: "I said the same thing." This time, Zelenskiy got in a good-natured dig. "You're wearing the same suit," he told the reporter, drawing laughter. "I changed." The media-savvy Ukrainian leader had worn military-type outfits to show solidarity with the troops fighting Russian invaders since Moscow's 2022 full-scale invasion. But after the February meeting with Trump, Zelenskiy switched to a more formal wardrobe. When the two leaders met at Pope Francis's funeral in Rome in April, the Ukrainian president wore a heavy black field jacket and black shirt buttoned to the collar, with no tie.
