Michael Jackson's Biopic Hit With Third Blow Amid Estate Issues

Michael Jackson's Biopic Hit With Third Blow Amid Estate Issues

Yahoo2 days ago
's highly anticipated biopic has received what fans hope will be its final postponement after multiple hiccups.
The movie covering the late King of Pop's life and career has faced three significant delays in its release date since its announcement. The biopic's premiere was rescheduled from April 2025 to October 2025, and now to April 24, 2026.
Sources claim the drama surrounding Michael Jackson's biopic has burdened his young nephew, Jaafar Jackson, who portrays him in the movie. Additionally, the late singer's estate is currently at odds with his longtime associate over a $213 million extortion scheme.
Michael Jackson's Biopic Postponed To 2026
According to new reports, Michael's biopic has officially been scheduled for release on Friday, April 24, 2026. It will have a global theatrical debut and be available on IMAX screens, marking its third and hopefully its last postponement.
The delay with "Michael" began over the biopic's length, leading to it getting split into two movies to cover the late singer's illustrious career and life. There was a first cut in excess of 3½ hours, which also featured the second reason for postponement.
The initial cut of the movie referenced Jordan Chandler, who had accused Michael of molestation at 13. The late entertainer infamously settled the shocking claims for $20 million in 1994; however, he did so without admitting guilt.
Producers were forced to edit these controversial parts after production had ended because it was revealed that Chandler had an agreement that stopped him from being featured in the biopic. As for the movie's second half, Deadline reported it was still under development.
The Late Singer's Estate At War With His Longtime Associate
The new release date for Michael's biopic comes weeks after The Blast reported a war was brewing between his estate and his longtime associate, Frank Cascio. The Michael Jackson Estate and The Michael Jackson Company, LLC submitted a petition to the Los Angeles Superior Court early this month.
The plaintiffs accused Cascio of orchestrating a $213 million extortion scheme, claiming he threatened to spread false allegations about Michael.
A spokesperson for the estate noted in a statement that Cascio had spent over three decades as one of Michael's biggest supporters. However, he suddenly changed his tune for a massive payout.
"Mr. Cascio proudly described himself as part of Michael's 'second family,' and repeatedly and publicly denied any misconduct by Mr. Jackson. Now, years after Michael's passing, Mr. Cascio is attempting to profit by reversing his position and manufacturing claims he previously denounced as false," the rep claimed.
The King Of Pop's Former Pal Allegedly Violated A Confidential Agreement
In the petition, Michael's estate claimed Cascio's actions violated the terms of a 2020 Confidential Acquisition and Consulting Agreement. They noted that the document included strict confidentiality and non-disparagement clauses, as well as a binding arbitration clause.
"This is a straightforward case of civil extortion and breach of contract. We will not allow the legacy of Michael Jackson to be exploited through threats and falsehoods," the estate's attorney Martin D. Singer declared.
The petition implored the court to force Cascio into arbitration and prevent damage to Michael's reputation.
Cascio's issues with Michael's estate came two months after social media influencers accused him of having gambling debts. Content creators Grace Glenn and Julia Geraci claimed they were approached by unknown men who wanted to know about Cascio's whereabouts because he owed them a substantial sum.
How The Biopic Delays Affected Jaafar Jackson
The postponement of Michael's biopic reportedly placed significant pressure on his nephew, Jaafar. The Blast shared that a source claimed the young entertainer was forced to bear the brunt of the delays, noting he "put himself through hell to master his late uncle's performance style, dance moves, and general manner."
"He's had to maintain that peak conditioning and extremely low body fat for more than two years, starting with the early stages of the project and continuing through to the reshoots they've been doing this spring," the insider added. They added that Jaafar was equally burdened by his lack of power and control over the movie.
The source alleged the situation was "frustrating" for Jaafar because he feared the biopic's final cut might fail to embody the critical aspects of Michael's life, career, and his infamous sexual abuse allegations. The late musician's sister, Janet Jackson, also attempted to ensure the movie's success.
Michael Jackson's Sister Honored Him By Pausing Biopic Talks
The Blast covered Janet's touching gesture in honor of her late brother's memory, revealing she refused to launch her own biopic until his was released. A source shed light on the situation, claiming the cultural icon did not wish to steal the spotlight and allow her family to enjoy Michael's moment.
The source noted Janet was "extremely curious about how it's all going to turn out," claiming she held off on making any biopic decisions until she saw the outcome of Michael's movie. They added that she wasn't worried in the long run because her story differed from her brother's.
"From her unlikely breakthrough in the late eighties to her three marriages, to 'nipple gate,' Janet has had a crazy career and made music that went around the world," the source said about the singer's life.
Antoine Fuqua directs Michael's biopic, which features Hollywood veterans Nia Long and Colman Domingo.
Can Michael Jackson's biopic debut in April 2026, or will it suffer another postponement?

Malcolm-Jamal Warner carried a heavy load for Black America

There were three television characters who really mattered to me as a kid: Michael, Leroy and Theo. In elementary school, 'Good Times' was the television show that most closely resembled my family. And seeing reruns of Ralph David Carter's portrayal of a precocious young boy learning what it means to be poor, gifted and Black is what moved his Michael from fiction to family for me. By middle school, I was no longer wearing cornrows like Gene Anthony Ray, but I tried everything else to be like his character Leroy from the television show 'Fame.' For some of my classmates, the performing arts were a fun way to express themselves, and the show was inspirational. For me, it was my way out of the hood, and Leroy was the blueprint. Through the Detroit-Windsor Dance Academy, I was able to take professional dance lessons for free and ultimately earned a dance scholarship for college. But it wasn't a linear journey. Despite being gifted, I struggled academically and required summer classes to graduate from high school. That's why I connected with Theo, whose challenges in the classroom were one of the running jokes on 'The Cosby Show.' The family never gave up on him, and more importantly, he didn't stop trying. Through the jokes about his intelligence, the coming-of-age miscues (and the dyslexia diagnosis), the storylines of Theo — like those of Leroy and Michael — often reflected struggles I foolishly thought no one else was experiencing when I was growing up. It is only through distance and time are we able to see moments like those more clearly. In retrospect, the three of them were like knots I held onto on a rope I had no idea I was climbing. This is why the Black community's response to the death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner this week isn't solely rooted in nostalgia but also in gratitude. We recognize the burden he's been carrying, so that others could climb. When 'The Cosby Show' debuted in 1984, there were no other examples of a successful two-parent Black family on air. We were on television but often trauma and struggle — not love and support — were at the center of the narratives. So even though Black women had been earning law degrees since the 1800s — beginning with Charlotte E. Ray in 1872 — and Black men were becoming doctors before that, the initial response from critics was that the show's premise of a doctor-and-lawyer Black couple was not authentically Black. That narrow-minded worldview continued to hang over Hollywood despite the show's success. In 1992, after nearly 10 years of 'The Cosby Show' being No. 1 — and after the success of 'Beverly Hills Cop II' and 'Coming to America' — the Eddie Murphy-led project 'Boomerang' was panned as unrealistic because the main characters were all Black and successful. The great Murphy took on the Los Angeles Times directly in a letter for its critique on what Black excellence should look like. However, Black characters like Michael, Leroy and Theo had been taking on the media since the racist film 'The Birth of a Nation' painted all of us as threats in 1915. It could not have been easy for Warner, being the face of so much for so many at an age when a person is trying to figure out who he is. And because he was able to do so with such grace, Warner's Theo defined Blackness simply by being what the world said we were not. This sentiment is embodied in his last interview, when he answered the question of his legacy by saying: 'I will be able to leave this Earth knowing and people knowing that I was a good person.' In the end, that is ultimately what made his character, along with Leroy and Michael, so important to the Black community. It wasn't the economic circumstances or family structure of the sitcoms that they all had in common. It was their refusal to allow the ugliness of this world to tear them down. To change their hearts or turn their light into darkness. They maintained their humanity and in the process gave so many of us a foothold to keep climbing higher. YouTube: @LZGrandersonShow

Jamie Lee Curtis confirms she'll star in 'Murder, She Wrote' movie: 'Oh, it's happening'

She also teased that she's "very excited" to dive into the role first brought to life on TV by Angela Lansbury. The mystery of who will star in the lead role of a Murder, She Wrote film adaptation has been solved. When asked point-blank what the chances are that fans could see her pick up the mantel of Jessica Fletcher, the mystery writer and amateur detective first brought to life by the late Angela Lansbury in the long-running CBS series of the same name, Jamie Lee Curtis didn't hold back. "Oh, it's… happening," Curtis playfully confirmed to Entertainment Tonight at the world premiere of Freakier Friday. "We're a minute away, but yeah, [I'm] very excited. Very excited. But I'm tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting. I have a couple of other things to hustle, but then I'll get to enjoy that work." Deadline first reported in December that the Oscar winner was in talks to star in a Murder, She Wrote film at Universal written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, with producers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal. Previously, in October 2013, it was reported that NBC was planning a reboot of the series, but by January 2014 it was revealed that it was not moving forward. The original Murder, She Wrote, which ran for 12 seasons from 1984 to 1996, focused on Lansbury's Jessica Fletcher, who became embroiled in various murder cases that took place in the fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, as well as other locales around the globe. Created by Peter S. Fischer, Richard Levinson and William Link, the crime drama also starred Tom Bosley, William Windom and Ron Masak. Considered one of the most successful and long-running series in history, Murder, She Wrote was a hit with the industry and public alike. At the height of its popularity, it averaged 30 million viewers per week, according to the L.A. Times. Though she never won, the role earned Lansbury a whopping 12 Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The update from Curtis is a positive one for the reboot. As she alluded to, though, Curtis has much on her plate at the moment before she can pick up a magnifying glass. First up for the star is reprising her role of Tess Coleman in Freakier Friday, the sequel to the beloved 2003 film starring Lindsay December, she'll be seen in James L. Brooks' dramedy film Ella McCay alongside Emma Mackey, Woody Harrelson, Kumail Nanjiani, Spike Fearn, Ayo Edebiri, Jack Lowden, Rebecca Hall, Julie Kavner, Becky Ann Baker, Joey Brooks, and Albert Brooks. In addition to Murder, She Wrote, Curtis currently has another three projects in various stages of development. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly
