'Karuppu' teaser out: Suriya unites with RJ Balaji for an adrenaline-packed actioner

Khaleej Times4 days ago
The makers of actor Suriya's latest movie Karuppu released a teaser and posters on the occasion of his 50th birthday. Going by the looks of it, the movie promises an action-packed ride.
Directed by stand-up comedian-turned-filmmaker RJ Balaji — who rose to fame with prank calls and witty movie reviews on FM radio — Karuppu marks his first collaboration with Suriya, who is fresh off the success of Retro.
The movie stars Trisha Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Natarajan Subramaniam and the Malayalam stars Indrans and Swasika. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, Karuppu has Sai Abhyankkar composing its music, a relative newbie in the film industry. He shot to fame with the indie breakout number Katchi sera and followed it up with the chartbuster Aasai kooda.
Talking about uncharted territories, the action genre is new for Balaji, too, whose filmography comprises the political satire LKG; the fantasy comedy Mookkuththi Amman; and Veetla Visesham, a remake of the Bollywood dramedy Badhaai Ho.
Yet, Balaji promises an action flick that might be what fans of Suriya ordered. In Karuppu, he plays a lawyer by day and a vigilante at dusk, avatars that might be apt crowd pleasers.
The teaser is full of meta references: Suriya introduces himself as Saravanan, his real name. The stylish finger gesture from Ghajini is back, and his role as barrister harks back to his role in the critically acclaimed Jai Bhim. There is also a reference to Rajinikanth's cult classic Baasha, when he leans on a table confidently and says he has another name — a line that occupies prime space in Tamil pop culture.
Actor Dulquer Salmaan released the teaser's Malayalam version on social media.
GK Vishnu is the movie's cinematographer, while R Kalaivanan is its editor.
Suriya was last seen in the action thriller Retro, directed by Karthik Subburaj. The movie was a hit at the box office, erasing memories of his earlier movie Kanguvaa, also starring Disha Patani, that was critically panned. Trisha Krishnan's previous movie was Mani Ratnam's Thug Life.

When Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan burst crackers outside Rakesh Roshan's room

It has been 30 years since Karan Arjun was released, but the film remains etched in the memories of fans for its epic tale and the legendary chemistry between its two leading men, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Now, a recent interview with veteran actor Ashok Saraf offers new glimpses into the mischief and camaraderie that defined the film's behind-the-scenes moments. Speaking to Radio Nasha Official, Saraf confirmed long-circulating stories of the pranks the Khans would pull on set. 'Yes, yes,' he said when asked if Shah Rukh and Salman used to burst crackers and fire fake guns outside director Rakesh Roshan's room. 'I never used to go wherever this was happening. Kisi ko sataana ho toh main door hu (If someone's being troubled, I stay far away). But yes, both of them used to have a lot of fun.' According to Saraf, the duo wasn't alone. Their frequent partner-in-prank was none other than legendary comic Johny Lever. Saraf added, 'With him, I'd also... well, I wouldn't join in the pranks, but I'd be around.' In an earlier Radio Nasha interview, director Rakesh Roshan recalled, 'They would be outside my room shooting guns. I would be sleeping at night and I would hear guns going off, bottles flying. I would ask them, 'What are you doing?'' Despite the disruption, Roshan has always spoken fondly of his two leads, whom he considered like sons. Shah Rukh Khan, in the docu-drama The Roshans, reflected on those days with equal parts nostalgia and sheepishness. 'Pinkie ji scolded me a lot,' he admitted. ''You are troubling Guddu a lot. I didn't expect it from you.' Between Salman and me, I was slightly better behaved—at least on the face of it. I was like, 'I didn't do anything. It's all his (Salman) doing.' We were two young kids, really troubling a father figure, to be honest.' Released in 1995, Karan Arjun starred Shah Rukh and Salman as reincarnated brothers seeking vengeance for their mother (played by Rakhee Gulzar), with a powerful supporting cast including Kajol and Amrish Puri. The film was a massive hit and has since earned cult status in Indian cinema.

Salman Khan wishes he'd heeded father Salim Khan's advice earlier

Bollywood star Salman Khan recounted the precious piece of advice he got from his father, the legendary screenwriter Salim Khan. He shared a thoughtful message that no one can force anyone to do something and wished he had heard his father's advice earlier; however, Khan said it's "never too late". Taking to Instagram, he wrote a cryptic post along with a picture of himself in black T-shirt, "Present becomes yr past, past catches up 2 your future, present Is a gift, do right with it, mistakes repeated becomes a habit n then your character, dont blame any 1 , no 1 can make u do anything that u don't want to. My dad just said this to me, it's so true. Kash I heard this earlier but never too late." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Salman Khan (@beingsalmankhan) After his post, netizens dropped heart emojis and expressed their love for the superstar. Salman was recently seen in Sikandar, alongside Rashmika Mandanna. The film also starred Kajal Aggarwal, Sharman Joshi, Sathyaraj, Jatin Sarna, Sanjay Kapoor, Prateik, Smita Patil, and Kishore. In the film, Salman plays Sanjay "Sikandar" Rajkot, a man trying to fix his past after a tragic incident. Despite the big names, Sikandar, directed by AR Murugadoss, failed at the box office. Khan will don the army uniform in Apoorva Lakhia's directorial Battle of Galwan, based on the Galwan valley clashes at the India-China border in 2020. Twenty Indian soldiers had died during the Galwan valley clash on June 16, 2020, while the Chinese side too faced heavy casualties. Following the clashes, tensions between India and China rose with the army deploying formations near the Galwan Valley, along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh, and undertook a range of activities such as surveying border areas to stop a "possible" Chinese aggression. Since the clashes, India and China have disengaged from various border areas steadily, and have also created a buffer zone in various areas. Salman took to social media earlier to announce the project, unveiling a powerful motion poster.

Watch: Actress, who wore PM Modi necklace at Cannes 2025, slaps producer at film premiere in Mumbai

In a dramatic turn of events at the So Long Valley premiere in Mumbai, actress Ruchi Gujjar — who went viral for wearing the viral PM Modi necklace at this year's Cannes Film Festival — publicly threw her heels and got in an altercation with producer Karan Singh Chauhan, accusing him of duping her in a Rs2.3 million financial deal gone wrong, according to Indian media outlets. The confrontation wasn't just a publicity stunt as Gujjar has filed an FIR at the Oshiwara police station (July 24, 2025), citing criminal breach of trust, threats, and financial misconduct. According to a report in India Today, she alleges Chauhan took the money for a Hindi TV project he promised to co-produce with her, one that never even began production. Gujjar claims she transferred the money between July 2023 and January 2024 through her company, SR Event and Entertainment, after Chauhan offered her a profit share and on-screen credit. The incident exploded when Gujjar confronted Chauhan at the film's premiere in Mumbai, where she claims he became aggressive after she demanded repayment, prompting the now-viral altercation. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bollywood News (@bolly_newssss) So Long Valley director Man Singh weighed in, calling the incident a 'publicity stunt,' adding, 'If Ruchi paid money to Karan, let her show proof.' Chauhan, on his part, denied the allegations and said Gujjar even sought a stay on the film's release — which the court rejected. Mumbai police have registered an FIR against Karan. Gujjar has reportedly submitted banking records and documentation to support her claims, while investigations continue.
