Chenab Bridge Project Engineer's New Post On "Unnecessary" Fame
"I salute the millions of unsung heroes," said Dr Latha, who was a geotechnical consultant to Afcons, the engineering firm that constructed the bridge. "My role was to help in developing slope stabilisation schemes and design of foundations on slope," she added in a message on LinkedIn shared after the inauguration.
Dr Latha, who has been involved with the Chenab Bridge for 17 years, spoke about the headlines that described her as the "woman behind the mission" and one who performed "miracles to build the bridge". She called them "baseless."
"Please don't make me unnecessarily famous," she said. "I am one of the thousands who deserve appreciation for Chenab Bridge."
Currently attending a conference in Spain, the professor from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, thanked those who sent congratulatory messages. "Many fathers have written to me saying that they want their daughters to become like me. Many young kids have written to me that they now want to take up Civil Engineering as their career choice," she said.
"All glory belongs to Indian Railways," she said and appreciated the Indian Railways and Afcons for their execution of what many called an impossible task.
A leading geotechnical engineer, Dr G Madhavi Latha is a Higher Administrative Grade (HAG) professor at the IISc, Bengaluru.
Construction of the Chenab Bridge, part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL), faced significant challenges due to difficult terrain, seismic risks, and unpredictable geology. Dr Latha and her team helped the project navigate these complexities with a "design-as-you-go" approach.
This meant adapting to real-time findings like fractured rocks and hidden cavities, factors that earlier surveys had missed. Dr Latha provided guidance on rock anchor design and slope stability, elements crucial for a structure of this scale.
She also detailed her technical journey in a paper titled 'Design as You Go: The Case Study of Chenab Railway Bridge', published in the Indian Geotechnical Journal's special women's issue.
Standing 359 metres above the Chenab River, the bridge rises 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower. Indian Railways built it at a cost of Rs 1,486 crore, making it the tallest railway arch bridge in the world. The government calls it the biggest civil-engineering challenge Indian Railways has ever tackled. Engineers expect the bridge to significantly boost connectivity in the Kashmir Valley, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime project.

1 2 Kendrapada: Odisha recorded one of the lowest inflation rates in the country in June 2025, with rural inflation at 0.46% and urban inflation at 0.64%, well below the national averages of 1.72% and 2.56%, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI). In 2018–19, the Centre approved the state govt's proposal to create a Rs 100 crore state-level price stabilisation fund, releasing Rs 25 crore as the first instalment of the Centre's share. Lucknow: Senior IPS officer Ajay Kumar Sahni, who led 52 encounters, was on Wednesday named for the President's Medal for Gallantry this year. This is the third President's Medal of his career. He was picked for the award for showing 'exceptional courage' during a high-risk armed operation in Meerut on Republic Day (Jan 26, 2020). The President's Medal citation describes the 2020 Meerut operation as "a do-or-die situation in open combat." It praises Sahni's "rarest among rare" gallantry, leadership, and dedication under direct threat to life. In 2020, Sahni, as SSP Meerut, received information about two armed robbers on a motorcycle committing multiple robberies in Transport Nagar police station limits. When intercepted, the criminals opened fire at police and sped towards the Meerut–Delhi Bypass (NH-58).Sahni, along with the Crime Branch's surveillance team, moved to cut off their escape. The suspects, when cornered, opened fire, injuring station officer Dinesh Kumar and head constable Manoj Kumar. While a bullet nearly struck his chest, Sahni led the counterattack. In the ensuing gunfight, Chand alias Kale, a notorious gangster with a Rs 1 lakh bounty and over 40 cases, was killed. The two cops who were injured were also awarded gallantry medals. HC imposes cost of Rs 5L on HS Gour varsity, asks for fresh appointments
Bhopal/Jabalpur: The MP high court imposed a cost of Rs 5 lakh on Harisingh Gour Central University, Sagar, for "utterly illegal and arbitrary" appointment of assistant professors in the university and said the university will deposit the "exemplary cost" within 45 days. The HC stated that the university will be at liberty to recover the amount from members of the executive council who participated in its meeting on Nov 14, 2022. The court also set aside the decision taken in the 2022 meeting and restored an earlier decision of the executive council taken in Feb 2020 and said a fresh list for appointment of assistant professors be made according to this decision. The amount of cost received from the university will be divided among MP Police Welfare Fund (Rs 2,00,000.00), National Defence Fund (Rs 1,00,000.00), Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (Rs 1,00,000.00) MP State Legal Services Authority (Rs 50,000.00) and High Court Bar Association, Jabalpur (Rs 50,000.00). Allowing a petition filed by Dr Deepak Gupta from Sagar, the bench of Justice Vivek Jain said appropriate cost needs to be imposed upon the university in defeating the rights of the left-out candidates and trying to protect and save illegally selected candidates. Therefore, an exemplary cost of Rs 5.00 lakh is imposed jointly on respondents the VC and secretary. Dr Gupta in his petition said that in 2010, vacancies were advertised for appointment of assistant professors without mention of vacancies. Later, a modified advertisement was issued in which 76 vacancies were advertised. However, the appointment of 156 candidates was made.
