Aussie Olympian announces birth of first child, reveals name

Australian Olympic gold medallist Cam McEvoy has announced the birth of his son, and he has revealed the name choice holds a special meaning. On Monday, the 50 metre freestyle champion confirmed the news on Instagram to his 152,000 followers. Hartley James McEvoy was born on 10th July, with McEvoy saying the name is 'an ode to the strength of the heart'. The moniker is a tribute to his wife Maddi, who has endured heart problems throughout her life. Born with a pulmonary valve defect, she has had four open-heart surgeries - including a valve replacement when she was 17. McEvoy shared that her medical experiences were fresh on their minds during the delivery of their baby. 'We had a well thought out birthing plan because of Maddi's heart which basically involved as little pain as possible to keep her heart rate down,' McEvoy said. 'But Hartley seemed to have different plans - it was fast, wild, calm, and beautiful all at the same time.' The Olympian ended his announcement post on a sweet note, after telling followers that 'mum and baby are both doing exceptionally well'. 'A little H(e)art goes a long way ❤️❤️.' The Olympic swimmer shared a photo of him holding his son. Credit: Instagram The comments were quickly flooded with well-wishes for the family from fellow Olympian swimmers. 'He's beautiful Cam! Congratulations to you both,' eight-time medallist Cate Campbell commented. 'What a beautiful boy, we will have the cutest fan club,' three-time champion Sarah Sjostrom said. 'He's already a stud,' Australian swimming legend Grant Hackett said. Back in February, the Paris 2024 medallist stunned many of his followers when he revealed he had secretly wed Maddi. The couple shared the happy news with a single photo of them on their wedding day, captioned with the word 'eloped'.

'Not all bad': Aussie icon Magda Szubanski shares upbeat health update as she continues treatment for stage four blood cancer

Beloved Aussie comedian Magda Szubanski has returned to social media with a health update, just over a month since revealing she's battling stage four Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer. The 64-year-old posted a lighthearted video to Instagram on Monday night, giving fans a glimpse into how she's coping with treatment. True to form, Magda managed to find humour in the tough situation, captioning the post: "The upside of The Cancer - it ain't all bad!!" "Thank you @lego and @thrivepr for my new Lego Land Rover classic Defender. This will keep me busy for a bit," she said. Dressed in a cosy grey hoodie, the Kath & Kim star beamed as she showed off her new LEGO set. "Having The Cancer is not all bad because, look… LEGO," she said in the clip, grinning. Magda then quipped that she's "such an 11-year-old boy trapped in a 64-year-old lesbian's body". "I don't know how that happened, it just is what it is," she said. While the comedian and writer admitted that fiddly LEGO builds can be a challenge thanks to "chemo-induced numbness" in her fingertips, she said she's "planned ahead by ordering a kit with pliers and finger protectors". "GOOD TIMES!!!" she joked. The Logie-winning actress even gave a sweet nod to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who was known for her penchant for Land Rovers. "Now all I need is a Lego Queen Elizabeth II to pop in the driver's seat," she said. Magda's update was quickly met with a flood of supportive messages from fans and fellow celebrities alike. "God bless you and your beautiful outlook on life and Lego… sending positive vibes," Married At First Sight alum Dave Hand wrote, while Big Brother winner Reggie Bird added: "Oh looking forward to the end result." MasterChef favourite Julie Goodwin left a simple but heartfelt purple heart emoji. "The one thing chemo hasn't taken away from you is your spirit & your sense of humour Magda. You rock, you've got this x Hang in there, Lego is great!" one fan commented. Another wrote: "Love you Magda. (Love Lego too!) Keep up the good work. We are all here cheering you on from the sidelines." One admirer even suggested LEGO make a Sharon Strzelecki figurine - Magda's iconic Kath & Kim character – to "pop in the driver's seat". Magda first revealed her diagnosis on 29 May, sharing that the aggressive cancer was only discovered by chance during a routine breast screening, which detected swollen lymph nodes. "TBH, I've been feeling pretty rats*** for ages," she said at the time. "So I asked for extra bloods and - voila!" While she admitted the diagnosis is "very rare, very aggressive, and very serious", she said she was already undergoing treatment in her hometown of Melbourne and remained hopeful. "I won't sugar-coat it: it's rough. But I'm hopeful," she told fans. "I'm being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant, and I've never felt more held by the people around me." She urged others to be proactive about their health, saying: "Get tested and listen to your body!" Just days later, on June 1, she returned to Instagram to thank fans for their outpouring of support. "It's been so moving, and really, youse are the wind beneath my wings," she wrote, her trademark humour shining through. "Thank you very much, love youse all."

The Wiggles launch Backseat Brainiacs to combat children screen time on road trips

Road trips with children can be tough at the best of times, with parents usually resorting to screen time to occupy restless kids on the road. However, Australian parents have revealed their children now spend a staggering amount of their time on tablets and smartphones, prompting children's music group The Wiggles to push for change. 'We live in a digital world,' mum and red Wiggle, Caterina Mete, told 7NEWS. 'So children need to be familiar with that, but it shouldn't be everything.' Mete said she didn't know what to anticipate when it came to navigating screen time as a new mum after giving birth to her twin girls, Dolly and Gigi, in 2024. 'I didn't know what to expect,' she said. 'I know it can help a lot for parents to have a screen. 'Especially if they need to have a shower. I know that helps me. 'But I think also just making sure that you monitor it, and it's a healthy amount, and it is not overdone because children love to play.' Most Australian children spend more time on screens than is recommended, according to the Australian Institute of Family Studies. Estimates from primary research suggest only 17–23 per cent of preschoolers and 15 per cent of five-to-12-year-olds meet screen-time guidelines. In an attempt to curb the screen time trend, The Wiggles has partnered with car rental company Thrifty to launch Backseat Brainiacs, a screen-free car game aimed at reducing the amount of screen time for kids on road trips. 'There's a staggering amount of screen time used in cars, and it's nice if we can just get away from that a little bit and just look at the beauty of nature,' Mete said. '(Backseat Brainiacs) makes car rides more engaging for the children in an interactive and fun family way. 'Children have got the best imaginations. They come up with such wonderful things, and being able to do that in a car ride is pretty special, I think.' The Wiggles activity pack includes memory card matching games, a road trip scavenger hunt, and the listen-along Backseat Brainiacs audio quiz read out by The Wiggles. 'There's a scavenger hunt where children can tick off things they've seen on the car ride,' Mete said. 'It might be, you know, a kangaroo, and they can tick that off, and it keeps them looking out the window and looking at the Australian landscape and beautiful of always relying on screens.' Mete said her favourite road trip game as a kid was 'I spy'. 'It's still a great game for children. You know, it's a game that will last forever.' Damien Shaw, Vice President at Thrifty Asia Pacific, said they wanted to create something that turns the car ride into a shared experience for the whole family. 'As a parent, I know how tough it can be to keep children engaged on long drives,' he said. 'With Backseat Brainiacs, we wanted to offer something that goes beyond the usual screens and snacks.' Backseat Brainiacs and the accompanying The Wiggles travel packs will be available from July 14 at participating Thrifty Car Rental locations across Australia and New Zealand Non-Thrifty customers can head to or to download and print off the road trip scavenger hunt or access a link to the Backseat Brainiacs audio quiz.
