
How Did a Man's Brain Turn to Glass 2000 Years Ago?
Almost 2,000 years ago, a young man was lying in his bed near Mount Vesuvius. Suddenly, an extremely hot cloud of ash came down from the erupting volcano.
The heat was so intense that it turned part of his brain to glass.
That is the theory Italian scientists have proposed to explain the strange case of an ancient Roman's brain. They said it is the only human tissue ever known to have naturally turned to glass.
This rare brain could rewrite the story of one of history's most famous natural disasters.
Mount Vesuvius is near the modern-day Italian city of Naples. The volcano erupted in the year 79 AD, covering the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum with a fast-moving layer of rock and ash called a pyroclastic flow.
Thousands of bodies have been discovered in the two places. They are frozen in time, showing people today the daily life of ancient Rome.
In the 1960s, the burnt remains of a man about 20 years old were found on a wooden bed in a building in Herculaneum used for the worship of the Roman Emperor Augustus.
Italian anthropologist Pier Paolo Petrone, a co-author of a new study, noticed something strange in 2018. What was left of the man's brain had been changed into pieces of shiny black glass.
Surprising finding
Guido Giordano is the lead writer of the study published in Scientific Reports in February. He told the French News Agency (AFP) that these pieces are up to a centimeter wide.
When the scientists studied the glass using an electron microscope, they discovered an "amazing, truly unexpected thing," he said.
Complex networks of nerve cells and other identifiable parts of the man's brain and spinal cord were preserved in the glass, according to the study.
How this happened is something of a mystery.
Glass only forms in nature when extremely high temperatures cool very rapidly, leaving no time for crystallization. It is usually caused by meteorites, lightning, or lava.
This is even more unlikely to happen to human tissues because they are mostly made out of water.
The Roman's brain being preserved in glass is the "only such occurrence on Earth" ever documented for human or animal tissue, the study said.
The scientists said that the brain must have been exposed to temperatures above 510 degrees Celsius.
That is hotter than the pyroclastic flow that buried the city. Then the brain needed to rapidly cool down. All this had to happen before the flow arrived.
The scientists think this only could have happened if the ash cloud from Vesuvius sent out a very hot blast before the pyroclastic flow arrived.
This theory is supported by evidence of a thin layer of ash that settled in the city shortly before it was covered by thick layers of rock and ash.
This would mean the people of Herculaneum were actually killed by the ash cloud — not the pyroclastic flow as had long been thought.
'Poorly studied' threat
Giordano hoped the research would bring more attention to the threat of these hot ash clouds. They remain "very poorly studied" because they leave little evidence behind.
French volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft were the subjects of the 2022 documentary film Fire of Love. They were killed by such an ash cloud, Giordano said.
And some of the 215 people killed during the 2018 eruption of Guatemala's Fuego volcano were also victims of an ash cloud, he added.
"There is a window of survivability" for these hot blasts, he said, adding that building houses which can resist high heat near volcanoes could help.
But why did the man with the glass brain alone suffer this fate?
The other citizens of Herculaneum had some time to run away from the eruption. All the other bodies discovered there were clearly trying to flee.
But the man, who is thought to have been the guardian of the Collegium building, stayed in bed in the middle of town, so he was the first hit.
Giordano said that we will likely never know the whole truth of what happened that day.

Methods for Protecting Earth against an Asteroid Strike
Astronomers following asteroid activity in space estimate there is a very small chance an object large enough to destroy a whole city could strike Earth in 2032. But space agency officials say even if such an asteroid keeps heading on a path toward Earth, the world is now much better-equipped to defend itself against such a threat. The American space agency NASA recently estimated there was a 3.1 percent chance that asteroid 2024 YR4 would hit Earth on December 22, 2032. That is the highest probability predicted for such a large space rock in modern times. Richard Moissl is head of the European Space Agency's (ESA) planetary defense office. While recognizing the risk the asteroid could present, he told the French news agency AFP people should not panic over such predictions. Astronomers have noted that the more data they gather, the odds of a direct asteroid hit are expected to keep rising over time. However, scientists say at a certain point the odds will likely drop down to zero. Moissl said he thinks it is important to remember that even in the unlikely event the probability keeps rising to 100 percent, the world is "not defenseless." Here are some methods currently being considered as defensive measures to keep humanity safe in case there is a real threat. Send a spacecraft to hit it Only one planetary defense method has been tried against an asteroid. In 2022, NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) sent a spacecraft into the 160-meter-wide Dimorphos asteroid. The effort successfully changed the asteroid's orbit around a larger space rock. Bruce Betts is chief scientist for the nonprofit Planetary Society. He told AFP that space agencies could hit the 2024 YR4 asteroid with several spacecrafts, observing how each one changed the path. The asteroid discovered in December is estimated to be 40-90 meters wide -- about half the size of Dimorphos. "You have to take care not to overdo it," Moissl warned. He said this is because if a spacecraft only partly destroys an asteroid, it could send smaller pieces of the space rock heading toward Earth. Non-contact methods A separate idea would involve sending a large spacecraft to fly alongside a threatening asteroid. The spacecraft would not touch the asteroid, but would use its gravitational force to pull it away from Earth. Moissl said another non-contact plan would put a spacecraft near the asteroid to eject a continuous flow of atoms to push the asteroid off course. Scientists have also considered painting one side of the asteroid white. They believe this could increase the light the object reflects to make it slowly change course. Contact methods One idea is to use a nuclear weapon against a threatening asteroid. In laboratory tests, researchers found that X-rays from a nuclear blast could move a rock. But this is considered more of a plan for kilometers-wide asteroids like the one that killed off the dinosaurs. And this method also carries the risk that a nuclear explosion could send additional pieces of the asteroid falling toward Earth. A similar method – but one considered less dangerous – would involve shooting laser beams from a spacecraft to destroy the side of an asteroid in an effort to push it away from Earth. If all else fails Moissl said that if all else fails, at least the world will have a good idea where a threatening asteroid would strike. Since astronomers believe most asteroids would at most threaten to destroy one city, efforts could be organized to get people out of an area before a strike. "Seven-and-a-half years is a long time to prepare," Moissl added. He also noted that even with the rising odds involving 2024 YR4, there is still about a 97 percent chance the asteroid will miss Earth. I'm Jill Robbins. NASA's newest space telescope blasts off to map the entire sky and millions of galaxies
NASA's newest space telescope rocketed into orbit Tuesday to map the entire sky like never before — a sweeping look at hundreds of millions of galaxies and their shared cosmic glow since the beginning of time. SpaceX launched the Spherex observatory from California, putting it on course to fly over Earth's poles. Tagging along were four suitcase-size satellites to study the sun. Spherex popped off the rocket's upper stage first, drifting into the blackness of space with a blue Earth in the background. The $488 million Spherex mission aims to explain how galaxies formed and evolved over billions of years, and how the universe expanded so fast in its first moments. Closer to home in our own Milky Way galaxy, Spherex will hunt for water and other ingredients of life in the icy clouds between stars where new solar systems emerge. The cone-shaped Spherex — at 500 kilograms, or the heft of a grand piano — will take six months to map the entire sky with its infrared eyes and wide field of view. Four full-sky surveys are planned over two years, as the telescope circles the globe from pole to pole, 650 kilometers up. Spherex won't see galaxies in exquisite detail like NASA's larger and more elaborate Hubble and Webb space telescopes, with their narrow fields of view. Instead of counting galaxies or focusing on them, Spherex will observe the total glow produced by the whole lot, including the earliest ones formed in the wake of the universe-creating Big Bang. 'This cosmological glow captures all light emitted over cosmic history,' said the mission's chief scientist Jamie Bock of the California Institute of Technology. 'It's a very different way of looking at the universe,' enabling scientists to see what sources of light may have been missed in the past. By observing the collective glow, scientists hope to tease out the light from the earliest galaxies and learn how they came to be, Bock said. 'We won't see the Big Bang. But we'll see the aftermath from it and learn about the beginning of the universe that way,' he said. The telescope's infrared detectors will be able to distinguish 102 colors invisible to the human eye, yielding the most colorful, inclusive map ever made of the cosmos. It's like "looking at the universe through a set of rainbow-colored glasses,' said deputy project manager Beth Fabinsky of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. To keep the infrared detectors super cold — minus minus 210 degrees Celsius — Spherex has a unique look. It sports three aluminum-honeycomb cones, one inside the other, to protect from the sun and Earth's heat, resembling a 3-meter shield collar for an ailing dog. Besides the telescope, SpaceX's Falcon rocket provided a lift from Vandenberg Space Force Base for a quartet of NASA satellites called Punch. From their own separate polar orbit, the satellites will observe the sun's corona, or outer atmosphere, and the resulting solar wind. The evening launch was delayed two weeks because of rocket and other issues.
