This led to a point being replayed despite Kartal's shot clearly landing out - ultimately costing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova a game during the first set.
Wimbledon scrapped line judges ahead of this year's tournament, instead fully relying on technology.
Previously, players could use the Hawk Eye system to challenge the line judges' decisions.
Debating the issue while live on the BBC, McEnroe - renowned for his umpire bust-ups during his career - said: "I'm the perfect guy to ask.

"My hair is pretty white at this stage and I haven't got much left, I might have a little more if it wasn't for all of those line judges blowing those calls.
"The thing is, it needs to be right. I think they [hawk-eye] have said it's plus or minus 3mm but is that for sure? Who's done the testing?"
Long-time BBC commentator Castle, 61, pointed out that players had few complaints about the old challenge system, which also relied on the same tech.
McEnroe, 66, replied: "If it's accurate I'm all for it."

At this point, Castle interjected: "It is accurate. It's only people that lose that say, 'I didn't think that was right.'
"You know, come on. Maybe on clay it's different and maybe it's still not perfect."

Unconvinced, McEnroe said: "If you say so."

Despite still beating Kartal, Pavlyuchenkova sensationally claimed that decision-makers had shown bias towards home player Kartal.
The Russian, 34, said on court: "How can you prove it? Because she is local, they can say whatever. You took the game away from me."
In her subsequent press conference, the tour veteran added: "I expected, so maybe they call in or out. Instead they just said replay.
"I don't know if it's something to do because she's local."

Pavlyuchenkova will next face No13 seed Amanda Anisimova for a place in the semi-finals.

‘My pec, my pec' – Grigor Dimitrov breaks down in tears after horror Wimbledon injury and forced to retire vs Sinner

CROCKED Grigor Dimitrov broke down in tears as he retired from a FIFTH successive Grand Slam after injuring himself with a serve. The Bulgarian, 34, was two sets up against world No.1 Jannik Sinner and looking to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time since 2014. 8 Grigor Dimitrov retired against Jannik Sinner after hurting himself while serving Credit: BBC 8 He was seen screaming 'my pec, my pec' in agony Credit: AP 8 Dimitrov was in tears as he had to pull out in horrible scenes Credit: BBC 8 Roger Federer watched on concerned from the Royal Box Credit: BBC Yet as he closed out game four of the third set, to draw level at 2-2, with a 96mph ace, he pulled something in his right arm and shoulder. Dimitrov collapsed to the floor in pain, clutching his right armpit and appeared to say "my pec, my pec" in reference to his pectoral muscle. The No19 seed then went backstage for medical treatment before deciding he could not continue. When he returned to the court to get his bags, he could barely lift his arm to shake the umpire's hand but he received a standing ovation for his efforts. Roger Federer, the eight-time men's champion, looked aghast from the Royal Box as the drama unfolded in an arena where he has had so much success and joy. It means Dimitrov's last five appearances at the majors – twice at Wimbledon, the US Open, Australian and French Open – he has had to quit mid-match. What makes it equally disappointing is that Sinner was there for the taking because he had hurt his elbow in set two and was on the physical brink. Sinner, 23, fell to the ground in game six of the second set when his right foot slipped on the slippery baseline. Most read in Tennis Instinctively, he put his right arm out to break his fall but hurt his elbow in the process of landing awkwardly. The Italian took a medical timeout, at 3-2 to Dimitrov, and a trainer tried to massage the area around his sore elbow. The reigning Australian and US Open champion was clearly in pain and at one point, uncharacteristically, he completely missed the ball with a swing of his racquet. It was his good fortune that he did not have to attempt, against the pain, a five-set comeback as Dimitrov got crocked in unexpected fashion. Sinner said: 'I don't know what to say because he's an incredible player. We all saw this today. 'He's been so unlucky in the past couple of years. An incredible player. A good friend of mine also. We understand each other very well off the court. 'Seeing him in this position, honestly if there would be a chance he could play the next round he would deserve it. 'But now mostly I hope he has a speedy recovery. 'Very, very unlucky from his side. I don't take this as a win at all. This is a very unfortunate moment to witness for all of us. 'I think in the last Grand Slams he has struggled a lot with injuries. To see him now having this kind of injury it's very, very tough. 8 Wimbledon 2025 LIVE - follow all the latest scores and updates from a thrilling fortnight at SW19 'We all saw this with his reaction, how much he cares about the sport, he is one of the most hard-working players on Tour. 'It's very unfortunate. Thank you for coming but this is not the end we wanted to see. It's very sad. We wish him all the best.' Before set three, officials decided to shut the retractable roof in anticipation of bad light. This decision was taken at around 8.20pm – as Sinner went backstage for some rest and treatment on his sore elbow. The call did not go down well with two-time singles champion Andy Murray, who felt there was more than an hour to go before the light really deteriorated. Murray said on X: 'So ridiculous to close the roof at this stage of the match. 'At least an hour of light left. Well over a set of tennis can still be played. It's an outdoor tournament!' American Brad Gilbert – a former coach of Murray, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick – voiced his disapproval over the closure. He said: 'This is day 8 of Wimbledon and the seventh time this tournament will finish under roof. Not for rain. Because of long matches. Never seen this happen before.' Mirra Andreeva advances to quarter-finals at Wimbledon

Mirra Andreeva's stunning Centre Court debut ended in bizarre fashion when she forgot the score and did not realise she had won the match. The Russian teenager became the youngest woman to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 18 years by breezing through round four with a rapid 6-2 6-3 win over world number 10 Emma Navarro. But an unaware Andreeva was so focused on her performance that she lined up to face another Navarro serve, rather than celebrate converting match point. With her American opponent waiting at the net to shake hands, the 18-year-old briefly looked bemused before jogging in from the baseline, to the amusement of spectators. "I kept telling myself I'm not the one who is up on the score, I am the one who is down," she said after setting up a meeting with Belinda Bencic with victory in 75 minutes. "That helped me to stay focused and in the end I completely forgot the score. "I'm happy that I did it because I think I would have been three times more nervous on a match point." Aside from the humorous mix-up, Andreeva suffered no hiccups as she emphatically stayed on course to emulate coach Conchita Martinez – the 1994 Wimbledon champion. She blitzed Navarro to clinch the opening set in just 33 minutes and, despite being broken twice in the second, was not unduly troubled. Aged 18 years and 75 days, Andreeva is exactly the same age as Czech player Nicole Vaidisova was when she progressed to the last eight in 2007. Marvellous Mirra 🤩 The 18-year-old shines on her Centre Court debut, booking a place in the #Wimbledon QF — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 7, 2025 Earlier, Bencic blew five match points on her own serve before bouncing back to reach the quarter-finals for the first time. The 2021 Olympic champion also saved three break points in a captivating ninth game of the second set against Ekaterina Alexandrov a. Russian 18th seed Alexandrova eventually broke to prolong the Court One contest but Bencic responded immediately to progress 7-6 (7-4) 6-4. Bencic's best run in SW19 comes after she missed last year's championships due to the birth of daughter Bella in April 2024. Five-time grand slam champion Iga Swiatek cruised through to her second Wimbledon quarter-final. The Polish world number four began with successive double faults before defeating Danish 23rd seed Clara Tauson 6-4 6-1. Russian world number 19 Liudmila Samsonova awaits Swiatek after she beat unseeded 22-year-old Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 7-5 7-5.
