Sources indicate the NDA nominee will likely be a BJP leader with strong ideological roots in the RSS, the party's parent organisation
The Bharatiya Janata Party's top decision-making body is set to meet on Sunday evening to finalise the ruling National Democratic Alliance's candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential elections.
In a meeting of NDA leaders in Parliament on August 7, the alliance authorised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president JP Nadda to take the final call on behalf of all partners. The BJP parliamentary board—which includes PM Modi, Nadda, defence minister Rajnath Singh, and home minister Amit Shah—will now give the green signal to the chosen name.
Sources indicate the nominee will likely be a BJP leader with strong ideological roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the party's parent organisation. Many names have been doing the rounds, from Rajnath Singh to JP Nadda to finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and speculation has also been rife about a present governor being offered this post, such as Maharashtra's CP Radhakrishnan, Gujarat's Acharya Devrat, or J&K L-G Manoj Sinha.
Unlike the practice of the past, this time around, there has been no information about the government reaching out to the opposition parties yet on building consensus for the candidate for the Vice President of India. It is unlikely that the opposition will agree with the ruling side, given the acrimony that one has witnessed recently in Parliament, with the government refusing to discuss the issue that the opposition has been pursuing relentlessly regarding the SIR voter list review drive.
Once bitter critics of VP Jagdeep Dhankhar, and also having moved an impeachment motion against him at the end of last year, several members of the opposition showed much sympathy towards him after his resignation. This has not gone down too well, even within several quarters of the opposition, on why this sudden sympathy for Dhankhar and linking it to a fallout between the government and him.
In a major show of strength, chief ministers and deputy CMs of all NDA-ruled states are expected in Delhi on August 21—the last date for filing nominations. Senior NDA leaders will formally propose and second the candidate, with PM Modi himself expected to be the lead proposer.
The Vice Presidential race will not be a walkover—opposition parties are also set to field their own contender, setting the stage for a spirited contest.
The vacancy arose after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's sudden resignation, citing health reasons. With the post declared vacant, the Election Commission announced polls for September 9. Nominations opened on August 7 and close on August 21. MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will vote to elect the country's second-highest constitutional office bearer after the President.
In trademark style, the BJP has already lined up preparations—a special workshop for its MPs from September 6 to 9, expected to include mock voting drills to ensure maximum participation and error-free balloting. NDA MPs are likely to be part of similar training sessions, underlining the alliance's intent to go all out for victory.
The position of the Vice President of India is extremely significant, as it is the second-highest constitutional post in the country. Apart from the VP's role, the person is also the de facto chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Whole country now knows EC 'stealing' elections in collusion with BJP: Rahul

SASARAM: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday claimed the whole country now knows that the Election Commission is "stealing" elections in collusion with the BJP and asserted that the INDIA bloc will not let their "latest conspiracy" to steal Bihar Assembly polls succeed, as he embarked on his 1,300 km 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in the state. Gandhi alleged that assembly and Lok Sabha polls were being "stolen" across the country and there was a "conspiracy" in Bihar to do the same through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Addressing the gathering here at the launch event of the yatra covering over 20 districts in Bihar, Gandhi said while he was asked to submit an affidavit after his press conference exposing "vote chori", no such demand was made from BJP leaders who made claims in their presser. "In the whole country, assembly and Lok Sabha elections are being stolen and their latest conspiracy is to delete and add voters through SIR to steal the elections in Bihar," Gandhi charged. "We have come here to tell you that we will not let them steal the election in Bihar. People of Bihar will not let them steal elections. The poor only have the power of vote and we will not let them steal polls," the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said. He said the whole country now knows what the EC is doing and the Congress showed how it is carrying out this "theft". "Wherever this theft is happening, be it Bihar, Maharashtra, Assam, West Bengal, we will catch their theft and put it before the people," Gandhi said. He also alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi runs the government along with billionaires. "Your vote is stolen and then your money is handed over to 5-6 truth of SIR, the vote chori in Bihar, we will put it before the people," Gandhi said. He asserted that it is a fight to save the Constitution. Gandhi alleged that the RSS and the BJP are trying to "erase" the Constitution. "In every election the BJP wins. In Maharashtra, all opinion polls said the INDIA bloc will win the assembly polls. In the Lok Sabha polls, our alliance won but after four months in the same Maharashtra, the BJP alliance swept the assembly polls as one crore voters were added through magic and wherever such additions happened, the BJP won," he claimed.

PM Modi Flags Off Two Highways To Curb Congestion In Delhi-NCR

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two landmark highway projects in Delhi-NCR worth nearly ₹11,000 crore, marking a major boost for the region's infrastructure and connectivity. The projects include the 10.1-km Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Alipur–Dichaon Kalan stretch of Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). The inauguration ceremony was held in Rohini on August 17, where PM Modi first reviewed the sites and interacted with shramyogis (construction workers) who played a key role in building the projects. Jakhar seeks support for PM against US pressure and in favour of farmers' interest

Chandigarh: Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Sunday called on all the stakeholders to "set aside politics and stand united with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national interest for his resolute stand in favour of the farmers against the US pressure". In a written statement, Jakhar mentioned: "The US, which considers itself the global enforcer, has been continuously pressuring India to allow its agricultural products into Indian markets. To this end, the US has imposed stringent tariff restrictions on India. However, PM Narendra Modi understands that allowing the US agricultural products into India would devastate Indian farmers, and thus, he refused to bow to this pressure." He emphasised: "At a time when major global powers succumbed to US demands, PM Modi prioritised the interests of Indian farmers and refused to open Indian markets to the US." In an appeal to the farmers and farmer organisations, the senior leader stated: "This is the time to stand firmly with the PM in the interest of the nation, so he can fight for the farmers' rights with even greater resolve." On the land pooling policy rollback by the ruling AAP, Jakhar said: "The parties shedding crocodile tears over the Punjab govt's land pooling policy did little to pressure the govt. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists Recommend: Eat 1 Teaspoon Tonight - Wake Up With a Flatter Stomach Break The Weight Learn More Undo It was only the BJP that made every possible effort to protect farmers' land and built public opinion against the policy. Due to the BJP's pressure and strong opposition from Punjab's people, the govt was forced to withdraw this policy." He added: "The people of Punjab have now clearly understood who engages in politics in the name of farmers and who truly stands with them in difficult times. This is the time to identify those who exploit farmers' names for political gain while doing nothing substantial for them. In contrast, the BJP took a firm stand against the land pooling policy in Punjab and stood strongly with the farmers. At the national level, PM Modi has taken on the US to protect the interests of the country's farmers.
