The 78th Independence Day was observed across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, including the merged districts, with the same fervor and enthusiasm that swept the rest of the country on Thursday. The day in Peshawar began with a 21-gun salute, followed by special prayers at Fajr for the country's progress, prosperity, and unity. Throughout the provincial capital, government and private institutions marked the occasion with a series of special events. Flag-hoisting ceremonies were held at the Peshawar High Court, University of Peshawar, Civil Secretariat, and several other government offices. Non-governmental organizations also joined the celebrations, arranging rallies and patriotic programs that infused the city with festive energy. The streets and public places were awash with national colors. Children dressed in green-and-white outfits, many fashioned from the Pakistani flag, added a lively charm to the day. BRT stations, public offices, and private buildings were adorned with flags and bunting, giving Peshawar a vibrant look reminiscent of Eid festivities. Police were deployed at key points to maintain security throughout the celebrations. A dignified flag-hoisting ceremony at Governor House Peshawar was attended by Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, US Consul General Shante Moore, Iranian Consul General Ali Banafshekhah, and Afghan Consul General Hafiz Mohibullah. The event began with the national anthem, followed by a guard of honour from the police. Special prayers were offered for Pakistan's progress before the governor, accompanied by the diplomats, cut a ceremonial cake. Governor Kundi extended heartfelt greetings to the nation and expressed gratitude to the foreign envoys for their participation and goodwill messages. In Dera Ismail Khan, a solemn yet spirited Independence Day ceremony was held at the Police Lines, with Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur as chief guest. A smartly turned-out police contingent presented a guard of honour to the sound of patriotic tunes from the police band. The chief minister hoisted the national flag, cut a celebratory cake, and planted a sapling to mark the occasion. The ceremony drew senior officials including Commissioner Zafarul Islam, RPO Syed Ashfaq Anwar, Deputy Commissioner Abdul Nasir Khan, DPO Sajjad Ahmad Sahibzada, representatives of government departments, community leaders, and media personnel. Addressing the gathering, CM Gandapur congratulated the nation, noting that this year's Independence Day coincided with what he termed a "national victory" in which the armed forces and people together "humbled India's arrogance." He paid tribute to martyrs and veterans from the creation of Pakistan to the present, stressing that freedom is earned through sacrifice.

Police roll out comprehensive security plans for Chehlum processions
Ahead of Chehlum processions scheduled for August 15 (Friday), the Islamabad and Karachi police have chalked out extensive security plans, with thousands of personnel deployed in both cities to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of religious gatherings. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, during a press conference at the central Imambargah in G-6, stated that the Islamabad Police has established a comprehensive security plan for the Chehlum procession in the federal capital. The plan has been developed with reference to the past five years' security arrangements. To ensure foolproof security of the procession, a force comprising 5,000 officers and personnel has been deployed. Additionally, special units of the CTD, police, and Rangers have been deployed at the front and rear of the procession. Furthermore, 16 Quick Response Force (QRF) teams of the Rangers, 29 QRF teams of CTD, and 16 elite police vehicles have been stationed to respond promptly to any emergency. Entry points have been increased to facilitate participants. The purpose of all these arrangements, he said, is to provide maximum convenience to citizens so they face no difficulty during the Chehlum procession. The public is urged to cooperate with the police and immediately report any suspicious activity to the emergency helpline Pucar-15. Meanwhile, Karachi police have also finalized a robust deployment plan as a part of extensive security measures for the observance of Chehlum, involving 11,479 police officers and personnel. According to details shared by Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi, Javed Alam Odho, a comprehensive security strategy has been put in place to ensure peace and order across the city during the religious commemorations. Out of the total deployment, 7,465 police officers and personnel will be stationed along the routes of 108 processions, while 2,901 officers will be on duty at 501 majalis (religious gatherings). The security plan places special emphasis on sensitive installations, public places, and key government and private buildings, which will remain under high alert. The routes leading to the city's central Chehlum procession will be completely sealed, and heightened security measures have been implemented around Nishtar Park, a focal point of the day's observances. Entry and exit points of Karachi are also being closely monitored, with coordinated checkpoints and search operations in place. The Bomb Disposal Squad has conducted complete sweeps and clearance operations at all major venues to prevent any untoward incident. Independence Day celebrations today: Special security, traffic management plan finalised in ICT
ISLAMABAD: The capital police on Wednesday put in place an extensive security and traffic management plan to ensure public safety and the smooth flow of traffic in the city during the 78th Independence Day celebrations on August 14. According to a senior police official, over 4,000 officers and personnel have been deployed across the federal capital to maintain law and order. The plan includes patrolling, manning checkpoints, and securing key public areas such as markets and parks. Special security measures have been taken to prevent any untoward incidents on the occasion. Checkpoints have been established at various entry and exit points of the city for checking of vehicles entering the city, while a heavy police presence has been ensured in and around the high-security Red Zone. Dedicated patrol teams will also be monitoring parks and recreational areas to provide a safe environment for families. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or emergencies by contacting helplines Pucar-15, 1715, or 1815. Under the plan Srinagar Highway from Serena Underpass to Zero Point will remain closed in both directions, and entry of heavy traffic into Islamabad and Rawalpindi will be prohibited from 3 pm until 5 pm on August 14. Several roads will remain closed during the events, including Murree Road via Shakarparian, Chand Tara Chowk, Garden Avenue I-8, I-8 Garden Bridge, G-7 Loop, and the Sports Complex turn on Murree Road. Zero Point, Serena Hotel, and Khayaban-e-Suharwardy will be closed for both incoming and outgoing traffic. Alternate routes include Jinnah Avenue, Embassy Road, Serena Globe Chowk, BharaKahu, and Murree.
