If Ratan Tata was alive, victims wouldn't be subjected to "bureaucratic process" of "delayed payment": US Lawyer on AI171 crash
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], August 10 (ANI): The lead US attorney, Mike Andrews, representing over 65 families affected by the tragic AI171 plane crash, slammed the ongoing compensation delays for the victims' families, noting that such 'bureaucratic process' would not have existed if former Chairperson of the Tata Group, Ratan Tata, had been alive. Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Andrews highlighted the late Ratan Tata's legacy of compassion, suggesting his presence could have prevented such hurdles faced by the grieving families. 'Even in the US, we know who Ratan Tata was. We know a little bit in the US about his work ethic and his focus on being humble and taking care of his employees and so we know that if he were here today, we don't believe employees and victims and people who were on the aeroplane and on the ground would be subjected to a bureaucratic process in which they're delayed payment,' he stated. He pointed towards a distressing case involving a bedridden elderly mother whose only son, the only financial provider, died in the crash, noting that she depends on her son for her medical needs and that she is now left at the 'mercy of the world'. 'We met with one family, the elderly mother is bedridden, and she was depending upon her son to provide income to pay for her health care. He is now deceased. They have not received payment. What are they supposed to do? They are now left at the mercy of the world in determining how she is supposed to go on when the person who was helping provide for her was killed through no fault of his own,' he added. Earlier on Friday, Andrew outlined potential legal avenues depending on the findings of the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, emphasising that if the crash is linked to a defect in the aircraft, such as issues with the FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) system or the throttle control, a product liability claim could be filed in the US. Alternatively, if Air India is held responsible, claims would likely fall under the Montreal Convention. On July 26, Air India released Rs 25 lakh in interim compensation payments to the families of 147 of the 229 passengers who lost their lives in the crash and 19 others who lost their lives on the ground. These payments will be adjusted against the final compensation to be determined later. The Tata Group has also established 'The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust' in memory of the victims. The Trust has pledged an ex gratia payment of Rs 1 crore for each deceased individual and also supports the rebuilding of the BJ Medical College Hostel infrastructure, which was damaged in the accident, and provides assistance to first responders, medical personnel, and other support workers affected by the tragedy. On June 12, Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft, crashed shortly after it took off from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, killing 260 people, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India later released the preliminary report into the tragic crash, outlining the harrowing sequence of events that unfolded within 90 seconds of takeoff. It noted that both engines of the aircraft shut down unexpectedly during the initial climb, leading to a catastrophic loss of thrust and rapid descent. The crash represents one of the deadliest aviation accidents in India in recent history. (ANI)

Maharashtra: CBI busts illegal Call Centre racket; arrests five accused involved in Cyber Fraud
Nashik (Maharashtra) [India], August 10 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has busted an illegal call centre racket, being run by certain private persons in rented premises, in Igatpuri (Rainforest Resort), Nashik, Maharashtra, an official statement said. According to the statement, CBI registered this Cyber Fraud Case on 08.08.2025 against 06 accused private persons, all residents of Mumbai, as well as unknown private persons and Bank officials. It was alleged in the FIR that the accused persons entered into criminal conspiracy with each other and other unknown persons, and have committed financial fraud by impersonation and making phishing calls/deceptive calls, from an illegal call centre, posing as Amazon Support Services Call Centre. The accused persons have been allegedly cheating citizens of the US, Canada and other countries and fraudulently obtaining proceeds of crime via Gift Cards/cryptocurrency, the statement added. The call centre is located at Igatpuri, Nashik, Maharashtra. The accused persons reportedly recruited around 60 operators, comprising dialers, verifiers, and closers, to run the said illegal call centre. Investigation by the CBI has resulted in the recovery of 44 laptops, 71 mobile phones, and other incriminating digital evidence, as well as unaccounted cash of Rs. 1.20 crores, 500 gms of Gold, and 7 Luxury Cars worth Rs. 1 Crore. Transactions of approximately 5000 USDT cryptocurrency (Rs. 5 lakhs) and 2000 Canadian dollars worth gift vouchers (Rs. 1.26 lakhs) were also detected. During the searches, 62 employees working in the call centre were found operating live, where a process of cheating foreign nationals was in progress. So far, 05 accused persons have been arrested. Further investigation is underway. Earlier in July, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as part of its ongoing Operation Chakra-V, cracked down on a transnational cybercrime syndicate running a sophisticated tech support scam targeting citizens of the United Kingdom and Australia. In a coordinated operation conducted on 07.07.2025, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) carried out searches at three locations in Noida, including at a fully functional fraudulent call centre operating from the Noida Special Economic Zone. The operation was meticulously timed with the time zones of the victims, resulting in the detection of live scam calls in progress during the raids. Acting on credible intelligence, the CBI registered RC 07/2025 to investigate the syndicate, which posed as technical support staff of reputed multinational companies, including Microsoft. The fraudsters were cheating foreign nationals by falsely claiming that their devices were compromised and extorting money under the guise of resolving non-existent technical issues. After registering the case, the CBI collaborated closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), National Crime Agency (UK), and Microsoft Corporation to trace the syndicate's operations and locations. During the searches, the CBI seized extensive evidence, including advanced calling infrastructure, malicious scripts used to deceive victims, and documents revealing the scale of the fraud and extortion. The syndicate's call centre, operating under the name 'FirstIdea', was found to be technologically sophisticated, enabling cross-border anonymity and large-scale targeting of victims. The key operative, a partner of 'FirstIdea'. The CBI remains committed to combating the growing menace of cybercrime and reiterates its resolve to work with domestic and international partners to dismantle such syndicates and bring perpetrators to justice. Through Operation Chakra-V and similar initiatives, the Bureau continues to strengthen its capabilities to detect, investigate, and prosecute cybercriminals operating across borders. (ANI)

Three Thai soldiers injured by landmine amid tense Cambodia border ceasefire
Bangkok [Thailand], August 10 (ANI): Three Thai soldiers were injured by a landmine while patrolling the border with Cambodia, the Royal Thai Armed Forces said, days after the two countries agreed to a detailed ceasefire following last month's violent five-day conflict, Al Jazeera reported. One soldier lost a foot, while two others sustained injuries after stepping on a landmine in an area between Thailand's Sisaket and Cambodia's Preah Vihear provinces on Saturday morning, the military added. 'One soldier suffered a severe leg injury, another was wounded in the back and arm, and the third had extreme pressure damage to the ear,' Al Jazeera quoted the Royal Thai Armed Forces as saying. Cambodia's defence ministry said it 'has yet to receive clear confirmation from Cambodian frontline forces concerning the explosion,' adding that its army 'has been strictly respecting the spirit of the ceasefire,' Al Jazeera reported. Thailand stated the incident occurred within its territory in an area recently cleared of landmines and announced it would lodge a complaint against Cambodia for violating a treaty banning the use of landmines and infringing on Thai sovereignty, the Thai foreign ministry said in a statement, Al Jazeera added. Both Thailand and Cambodia are signatories to the Ottawa Convention against landmines, Al Jazeera noted. This marks the third incident in recent weeks where Thai soldiers were injured by mines while patrolling along the border. Two previous similar incidents contributed to the downgrading of diplomatic relations and triggered the five-day fighting from July 24-28, which was the worst border clash between the neighbours in over a decade, Al Jazeera reported. The clashes involved artillery fire, infantry battles, and jet fighter sorties, killing at least 43 people. The conflict ended with a ceasefire on July 28 after US President Donald Trump warned both sides that trade deals would be jeopardized if the fighting continued, Al Jazeera reported. A recent meeting of defence officials in Kuala Lumpur concluded on Thursday with an agreement to extend the ceasefire. Both sides also agreed to allow observers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to inspect disputed border areas to prevent further hostilities, Al Jazeera added. Bangkok has accused Cambodia of planting landmines on the Thai side of the disputed border that injured soldiers on July 16 and July 23. Phnom Penh denied placing new mines and claimed that the soldiers had veered off agreed routes and triggered old landmines left from decades of war, Al Jazeera reported. (ANI)
