Based on this, scientists believe the newly discovered world may have a layer of dense ice underneath, topped by a thin atmosphere - or maybe even a shallow ocean.
Despite an estimated surface temperature of 300C (600F), researchers say the planet may still hold water.
This is because
TOI‑1846 b
is likely tidally locked - meaning one side always faces its star while the other remains in darkness.

Given the scorching temperatures, alien life is unlikely to be found on the planet.
Working with observers on four continents, researcher Abderahmane Soubkiou and colleagues at the Oukaimeden Observatory in Morocco confirmed the existence of the exoplanet.
'We have validated TOI‑1846 b using TESS and multicolor ground‑based photometric data, high‑resolution imaging, and spectroscopic observations,' Soubkiou wrote at the end of the team's announcement.
Their measurements show the planet orbits its star in just under four days.
TESS scans the sky every 30 minutes with four high-sensitivity cameras, making it the ideal tool for spotting shallow light dips like those from TOI-1846 b.
Each dip in the light from its neighboring star, a Red Dwarf, is caused when the planet passes in front of it from the perspective of Earth.
Because the star is faint, each transit of TOI‑1846 b subtracts only a few hundredths of a percent of its light - but TESS is built for picking up such slight flickers.
But different tools are needed to learn more about the possibly rocky, water-featuring world.
The team noted that the MAROON‑X instrument on Gemini North in Hawai'i can verify the planet's mass and uncover any hidden sibling planets lurking in the shadows.
Nasa scientists hope they can secure time with the James Webb Space Telescope and target TOI-1846 b to study its atmosphere using infrared light.
The $10 billion telescope discovered its first-ever exoplanet just last month, but has been used to analyse others on its journey through space.

THE US has unveiled plans to build a nuclear reactor on the moon as it seeks to get ahead of China and Russia in the new-age space race. It comes just weeks after Russia inked a deal with China to build a nuclear power station on the moon as part of their shared lunar space base. The Russian reactor will be used to power the sprawling International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), which is being jointly led with China, according to a new agreement signed by the two nations. A directive from Nasa says that such an American nuclear reactor on the moon will establish US 'keep-out' zones on the lunar surface. This is to further stop rivals like Moscow and Beijing from effectively colonising the Moon. It reads: "The first country to do so could potentially declare a keep-out zone which would significantly inhibit the United States from establishing a planned Artemis presence if not the first. "[Nasa needs to] move quickly to support a future lunar economy [and] strengthen our national security in space." In 2022, Nasa launched a mission known as the Fission Surface Power Project, hoping to establish a source that could provide abundant and continuous power on the moon regardless of environmental conditions. The project is deemed crucial for supporting long-term human settlements on the lunar surface. It could also enable the exploration of deeper space destinations in the future. One lunar night is the equivalent of 14 nights on Earth. And it could also help light up the permanently shadowed parts of the moon to make further space explorations. Inside a nuclear reactor, atoms of certain elements - like uranium-235 - are split when struck by neutrons. This splitting releases energy in the form of heat and additional neutrons. The released neutrons can then strike other atoms, continuing the chain reaction. Reactors are designed to control this chain reaction, preventing it from becoming uncontrolled. A Nasa official told The Telegraph: 'If we are going to have a habitable system on the Moon then we have to bring power.' He said small reactors were already in use on submarines and aircraft carriers. 'They solve the problem,' he added. During the pilot project, Nasa specified that the reactor should stay under six metric tons and be able to produce 40-kilowatt of electrical power. But Mr Duffy has now directed the space agency to seek industry proposals for a minimum 100-kilowatt reactor to launch by 2030. India, Russia, China and the US have all been engaged in space developments to study the far point of the moon. It is deemed to be not only a compelling place for future space explorations but also a suitable site for lunar outposts. Scientists believe it could be the most promising location for water-based ice, which will be key to future human habitation on the Moon. It is also one of the moon's most resource-dense areas. The permanently shadowed places on the Moon could contain ice and other minerals, which would be vital resources for future explorers. Scientists reckon there is an abundance of Helium-3 in so-called 'cold traps' littered across the south pole, which can help produce huge amounts of energy here on Earth. The mountain peaks near the pole - which are illuminated for longer periods - could be used to provide solar energy to an outpost. With an outpost on the Moon, scientists will be able to analyse water and other volatile samples dating to the formation of the Solar System. For China, the landing of the Chang'e-6 lunar probe is an important milestone that the country will leverage to expand its space presence on the far side of the moon. It will use the data collected by the space lander to allow Chinese astronauts to set foot on the moon by 2030. "We better watch out that they don't get to a place on the moon under the guise of scientific research," Nelson told Politico in a 2023 interview. "And it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they say, 'Keep out, we're here, this is our territory.'' China has agreed to share the ILRS with 17 countries, including Egypt, Venezuela, South Africa, Pakistan, Thailand and Azerbaijan. Beijing has been firm that its intentions for ILRS are to collect samples and carry out 'scientific exploration", despite Nasa's suspicions. ILRS will be a permanent, manned lunar base on the Moon's south pole. Slated to be bigger than Disneyland, with a radius of 3.7miles, it is intended to host a command centre, a communication hub, and scientific facilities, alongside a power station. The groundwork will be laid by China's 2028 Chang'e-8 mission, which will be the country's first time landing an astronaut on the Moon. CHINA'S THREATENING SPACE AMBITIONS Under dictator Xi's leadership, China has been brewing ambitious plans to become the leader of the global space rush. The country spent roughly £11.2billion on its space programme in 2023, according to Statista. While China was late to the first round of the space race, Beijing is investing heavily in becoming the second nation to put humans on the Moon by 2030. The Chinese-owned Tiangong space station was completed in late 2022, and has been permanently manned since then. China has doubled the number of satellites it has in orbit since 2019, according to the US Defence Intelligence Agency. Experts also fear that China's monster network of tracking satellites could snoop on Western military operations. Washington and Beijing currently have the most developed plans for securing separate permanent bases on the Moon, out of any other country in the world. And fears are China, if it succeeds in making a giant leap ahead of the US, could threaten aggression in space. A series of non-binding bilateral agreements called the Artemis Accords have been signed between the US and other nations to assure peace in space and on other planets. However, China has stayed out of the agreement, indicating a potential threat from the communist country.

Nasa's futuristic observatory could finally find ALIENS as it hunts for hidden habitable worlds, say experts
NASA is plotting a new mission that could be the one to finally uncover alien life in the universe. Or, it may uncover a darker fact: that we humans are completely alone, on the unique oasis we call Earth. Fortunately, plans for those technologies are underway as part of an international effort. The Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) will be tasked with scouting out some of the nearly 6,000 exoplanets that have been discovered since the early 1990s. 'If we're going to find evidence of alien life beyond our solar system in our lifetime, the Habitable Worlds Observatory represents our best opportunity," Dr Caroline Harper, head of space science at the UK Space Agency, told The Sun. "Simply confirming that other habitable worlds exist would profoundly change our understanding of the universe and of our own planet's uniqueness." The HWO will look for chemical patterns - what scientists call biosignatures - around Earth-sized planets that lie within the habitable zones of nearby stars. The relative abundance of these three molecules in Earth's atmosphere, for example, cannot be explained by any non-biological processes. "That wouldn't be absolute proof of life, but it would be the strongest evidence we've had yet." It should be able to beam back pictures of planets human astronauts could only dream of laying their eyes on. While thousands of exoplanets have been detected, only a handful have been directly photographed. Instead, we often rely on painted impressions of distant worlds - where artists are guided by scientists as to what the data says a planet might look like. Pyle Current plans indicate that HWO - a large spacecraft similar to Hubble or Webb space telescopes - should be able to image a planet that is 10billion times fainter than its host star. Scientists also believe that HWO will also be able to detect Earth-like moons of giant extrasolar planets, and spot eclipses of giant planets and their lunar satellites. Funding pressures are real. And such ambitious missions are always vulnerable to delays. Dr Shyam Balaji, a theoretical physicist at King's College London The idea for HWO was first pitched some 15 years ago, and has since snowballed into becoming "the first specifically engineered to identify habitable, Earth-like planets… and examine them for evidence of life," according to Nasa. Advertisement By the time project jumps from paper into real-life, tangible tech, the HWO - or the core parts of the idea, at least - will be roughly 50 years old. That's if the mission survives President Donald Trump's proposed cuts to Nasa, in which the US space agency is forecast to lose nearly 20 per cent of its workforce. But experts are cautiously hopeful that HWO will make it off the ground. "Funding pressures are real," said Dr Balaji. "And such ambitious missions are always vulnerable to delays." Deputy executive director of the Royal Astronomical Society, Dr Robert Massey, said: "I think the value of it is so big, that it's just a really exciting mission. These worlds are very far away from Earth - with the closest potentially habitable world, Proxima Centauri b, located 4.2 light-years away. To spot these planets, even through the glare of their nearest star, HWO will need some next-generation instruments on board. Advertisement Of the many instruments that HWO will have installed, it will need a tool to block out scattered light. "If you put your thumb up in front of the sun, you can sort of look around it. The problem you have is that we've got an atmosphere so all the sunlight scatters," Dr Massey explained. "But if you do that in space, block out the light of the star, there's no atmosphere. "If you get the size of that right, then you could see planets in orbit around that star - and actually study them and look for the chemistry of their atmosphere." The primary mirror will be at least six metres in diameter, so it needs to be segmented one way or another. No decisions have yet been made on the detailed design of either mirror, telescope or spacecraft. Dr Caroline Harper, head of space science at the UK Space Agency Though HWO is expected to be pretty large - and will require a powerful rocket like Nasa's Space Launch System, SpaceX's Starship or Blue Origin's New Glenn to launch it into space. The European Space Agency (ESA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA) are interested in becoming partners in the project, just like they are on the Webb telescope. Speaking at Nasa's Habitable Worlds Observatory conference in Washington, DC, earlier this week, Dr Harper promoted the UK's ambition to lead an instrument on the mission. "The UK has developed exceptional expertise in exoplanet science and cutting-edge instrumentation," she said.
