Google debuts interactive charts in AI Mode to help make you a finance whiz

TL;DR Google has started testing a new AI Mode feature that generates interactive graphs for finance queries.
The feature makes it easy to compare and analyze information over time.
Interactive graphs in AI Mode are currently available as a Search Labs experiment.
Google debuted Search's AI Mode as a Labs experiment to select users earlier this year. At I/O, the company expanded availability to all US users, added Deep Search and Project Astra capabilities to the feature, and previewed some upcoming features, including AI Mode's ability to generate interactive graphics for complex datasets. Google has now started testing this feature for finance-related queries.
Google announced the new feature in a recent blog post, highlighting how AI Mode can help users compare and analyze financial information over a specific period with a custom-made interactive graph based on their query. As illustrated in the following clip, when asked to 'compare the stock performance of blue chip CPG companies in 2024,' AI Mode generates a stock price comparison graph and a table that dynamically updates the stock prices when you interact with the graph.
Users can also ask follow-up questions to get additional information or refine their queries. Google says the feature uses 'advanced models to understand the intent of the question, tap into real-time and historical information and intelligently determine how to present information to help you make sense of it.'
At the moment, the feature only works for finance queries related to stocks and mutual funds. However, Google will expand support for other topics in the future. If you wish to try it out, you can enable the experiment in Search Labs, but note that it's only available in the US.

AI Startup Perplexity Makes $34.5 Billion Bid For Google Chrome

AI company Perplexity has made a $34.5 billion offer for Google's Chrome browser, according to multiple outlets, making the bid as a judge considers forcing Google to spin off Chrome after it was ruled to have held a monopoly over online advertising technology. The offer was first reported Tuesday morning. A.I. Start-Up Perplexity Offers to Buy Google's Chrome Browser for $34.5 Billion

In an unlikely bid that shows the growing brashness of young artificial intelligence companies, the A.I. start-up Perplexity has made an unsolicited offer to buy Google's Chrome web browser for $34.5 billion. The tiny company made its offer against the backdrop of an upcoming antitrust decision against the tech giant. In a ruling due as early as this week, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta could force Google to sell its web browser as a way of reducing the company's dominance in the internet search market. The Perplexity chief executive, Aravind Srinivas, said in a letter to Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google's parent company, Alphabet, that its offer to buy the Chrome browser was 'designed to satisfy an antitrust remedy in highest public interest by placing Chrome with a capable, independent operator.' Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Perplexity's offer was previously reported by The Wall Street Journal. Perplexity is among the many companies that want to challenge Google's search engine through online chatbots and similar technologies that respond to queries with short sentences rather than just a list of links. The Chrome browser could give it an edge among Google's many challengers, including Microsoft, OpenAI and the Silicon Valley start-up But the unsolicited bid is a long shot, since Perplexity itself is valued at an estimated $18 billion. Jesse Dwyer, a spokesman for the company, told The New York Times that outside investors had agreed to back a potential deal. Judge Mehta ruled last year that Google had violated antitrust rules to maintain its dominance in the search market. The Justice Department has pushed for a federal court to force Google to sell its Chrome browser in a series of aggressive remedy proposals after prevailing in its antitrust case against the search giant. The department has argued that forcing Google to divest Chrome and share search results and ads with rivals would create more competition. The government told Judge Mehta that Google's monopoly — it controls about 90 percent of the search market — cannot be remedied without forceful structural changes to the company. And without a remedy like the sale of Chrome, Google was poised to dominate A.I., the government argued. 'This court's remedy should be forward looking and not ignore what's on the horizon,' said David Dahlquist, the government's lead litigator. 'Google is using the same strategy that they did for search and now applying it to Gemini,' he added, referring to Google's A.I. technology. Google has argued against the sale of Chrome, proposing smaller tweaks to its business model. Perplexity and other A.I. companies testified in April during the antitrust remedies hearing by Judge Mehta that it was interested in buying Chrome. Perplexity was founded in 2022 by a group of A.I. researchers including Mr. Srinivas, who previously worked at OpenAI. In an effort to boost usage of its A.I.-powered search engine, the company has started to offer a web browser of its own, called Comet. The New York Times sent Perplexity a cease and desist letter last year demanding that the company stop using its content to help power its A.I. technologies.

Circle stock rises after quarterly revenue beats estimates in first earnings since blockbuster IPO

Circle (CRCL) stock jumped 2% in afternoon trading on Tuesday after the stablecoin issuer posted better-than-expected quarterly revenue for the first time since going public. The company reported second quarter total revenue of $658 million, versus the $647 million analysts expected. CEO Jeremy Allaire said the company's stablecoin, USDC (USDC-USD), was the "fastest-growing major stablecoin over the past year." USDC in circulation grew 90% year-over-year to $61.3 billion at quarter end, and has grown an additional 6.4% to $65.2 billion as of Aug 10. "Overall activity globally in the digital asset economy has been growing," Allaire told Yahoo Finance on Tuesday morning. "We're continuing to see growth in the use of dollar digital currencies like USDC as a store of value around the world in cross-border settlements," he added. "Use cases continue to expand, and I think people are finding that this is an incredibly high utility, new form of money." The company also announced ARC, a new blockchain network for stablecoin finance that will launch in the second half of the year. "We wanted to create a way for institutions to pay fees on blockchains in a fast, predictable manner that would be simple from an accounting perspective and could deliver very low-cost and stable fees," CEO Jeremy Allaire said during the company's earnings call on Tuesday morning. The stock is up roughly 480% from its IPO price of $31 per share as crypto-friendly legislation has lifted the sector. Circle has been at the center of optimism over the stablecoin market following the passage of the GENIUS Act, legislation that creates guardrails and a framework for digital tokens backed by assets such as the US dollar. Circle makes much of its money from interest income, specifically from short-term Treasury bills backing its stablecoin, USDC. The company's reserve income increased 50% year over year to $634 million, primarily from an 86% growth in USDC stablecoin circulation. Allaire indicated if the Fed reserve cuts interest rates and yields on short term treasuries decline, the growth of stablecoins will offset decline in rates. "We believe that lower interest rates are going to be accelerative to the business, as money velocity picks up, as invested capital picks up, and as more people are putting money to use in the economy, this very high utility form of money will grow," said Allaire. The company also shares part of its revenue with Coinbase (COIN), a major distribution partner. Last month, Compass Point analyst Ed Engel flagged the risk of rising distribution costs as the company expands its network while continuing to share a portion of its interest income. On Tuesday morning, Engel said Circle's gross profit margin guidance of 36% to 38% for fiscal year 2025 "slightly underwhelmed." Engel said that forecast implies second half margins will come in below the first half of the year's 39%, writing "we would have expected higher gross margins in 2H25." "While CRCL's lower margin guidance could be due to conservatism, CRCL's recent partnerships don't seem to benefiting the near-term margin outlook. As such, we reiterate our Sell rating and $130 PT," he wrote. However, others on Wall Street saw the stock as a way for investors to participate in rising enthusiasm over stablecoins. "CRCL is a global leader in stablecoins and is the purest stablecoin play in the public markets right now, and we anticipate further gains in the shares as the company creates new opportunities for itself and its partners," Seaport Research analyst Jeff Cantwell wrote last month. The analyst has a Buy rating and price target of $280 on the stock. Circle's results come as the overall market hovers near all-time highs and crypto rallies on expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts and President Trump's push to include crypto in 401(k) plans. Prior to the earnings release, Wall Street analysts had nine Buy, five Hold, and four Sell ratings on Circle stock. Ines Ferre is a senior business reporter for Yahoo Finance.
