Kota Kinabalu: A man, who was detained on his 24th birthday this year, was jailed five years and ordered given a stroke of the cane for repeatedly taking syabu. Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan handed the sentence to Mohammad Zulkarnain who admitted to the charge against him on Tuesday. Mohammad was found taking the drug at 8.30am on Feb 24 this year after his urine was tested positive for drug at the Papar police station. He has two previous conviction records of taking the drug. The offence under Section 39C(1) (b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries a jail term of between five and seven years and whipping, on conviction. After completing the jail sentence, Mohammad was ordered placed under police supervision for three years. In meting out the sentence, the court advised Mohammad to not repeat to take the drug, seek for a job and find a soulmate since he is still single.
Advertisement In another court, the court set July 24 for further pre-trial case management for a 38-year-old lorry driver charged with committing criminal breach of trust involving frozen products worth RM39,326. The court set the date for Azlan Limin when his counsel discharged herself from representing him. Azlan informed the court that he could not engage a counsel because of financial problems. He is accused of breaching the trust given to him as a lorry driver who was entrusted by the Evergrowth Intergrated Food Industries Sdn Bhd with the 316 cartons of frozen goods on Apr 9 this year at the company premises in Kg Mook, Kinarut, Papar. He claimed trial to the offence under section 407 of the Penal Code which carries a jail between one and 10 years, with whipping and liable to a fine, on conviction. The court extended Azlan's bail. The 56-year-old female passenger of the Myvi was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 69-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was sent to hospital for further treatment. Three other men - two in the Hilux aged 60 and 62, and a 24-year-old lorry driver - escaped unharmed. Eight firefighters from Lahad Datu Fire and Rescue Station responded to the 2.34pm call and arrived within eight minutes. LAHAD DATU: Three Indonesian nationals were arrested here on Tuesday in two separate drug operations that also led to the discovery of a homemade air rifle. Acting district police chief Supt Jimmy Panyau said the first suspect, a 35-year-old man detained at Ladang Sebrang, tested positive for drugs and was found with 5.4g of syabu worth RM594. Later the same day, two more suspects, aged 40 and 41, were nabbed outside a house in Ladang Bagahak 3, with one caught carrying 5.07g of syabu and the other linked to an air rifle hidden on the porch. Both men also tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine, with all three suspects now under investigation for drug and firearm offences. SIBU (June 25): A charitable organisation staff member was charged in the Magistrates' Court here today with cheating Lanang MP Alice Lau into making a cash donation. Anna Kuo, 37, from Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah, was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which provides for between one and 10 years' imprisonment and caning, as well as a fine, upon conviction. Based on the charge sheet, she allegedly cheated Lau, who is also Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker, by dishonestly inducing her to deliver RM5,000 as a donation for haemodialysis patients. The alleged offence took place at Lau's parliamentary service centre on Jan 2 this year. Magistrate Romario Jonoi set bail at RM3,500 with two local sureties and ordered the accused to report herself each month to the case investigating officer starting July 1 until the disposal of the case.
