I can't believe Hibs turnaround under David Gray and here's what is waiting for them away to Midjtylland
Emiliano Marcondes has claimed David Gray deserves all the praise for the way he has turned European-bound Hibs around.
Gray leads the Edinburgh side into the first leg of their Europa League qualifier with Midjtylland in Denmark this week. That was the prize for transforming the capital side from bottom of the table to finishing third and best of the rest in last season's Premiership.
Marcondes told Record Sport: 'David Gray is a great guy and always one that wanted the best for the club. Yes, it's been a top job David has done.
'Just looking back at how it started (last season) and how he's turned it around and been able to get his ideas across, to make a lasting impact over time.
"It is now great to see how they get on in Europe."
Hibs travel to the MCH Arena for their opener against Midjtylland on Thursday. It will see two of Marcondes' former teams lock horns.
The Danish playmaker had a successful loan spell from Bournemouth at Hibs two seasons ago under Nick Montgomery and enjoyed a similar spell at Midtjylland earlier in his career.
The current Norwich City star admitted: 'Yes. I'm gonna be watching that game. It will be a great match-up for sure. It's a great stadium and loud.
'They sing a lot and when or if they score then the place will be bouncing.
'The home support will be very important for Midtjylland on Thursday night but having played for Hibs I know it could also be the same for them with a full house at Easter Road in the second leg.
'The fans in both legs could be important and even decisive.'
Marcondes went from Brentford to Midtjylland earlier in his on-loan. It was similar to Hibs' current tie up with Bournemouth.
He spent five months at Hibs and admitted the biggest highlight was his derby goal in the 1-1 Tynecastle with Hearts. Marcondes hasn't closed the door on making a visit back to Edinburgh in the future.
The 30-year-old proudly said: 'Scoring in the Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle for sure (was the highlight)!
'I really enjoyed my time in Edinburgh. It's a great place with great people. It is definitely a place I would come back to.'
Marcondes has since moved on from Bournemouth but believes their link-up with Hibs can be a big plus for both clubs. Shareholders The Black Knights have invested in the Leith club and are giving guidance on and off the field in a bid to take Hibs forward.
Hibs are also looking at a number of loan options from the English Premier League club.
The attacking midfielder explained: 'It was the same situation between Midtyjlland and Brentford when I went on loan.
'It is similar to the Bournemouth Hibernian connection that's why my move to Scotland became a reality.
'I think it will be a strong connection when you see the recruitment they have done in both clubs.
'It will definitely also help the younger players to get more experience. I think it is a win-win for both sides.'

Jean-Philippe Mateta strike gives Crystal Palace victory
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored an historic opener as Crystal Palace beat Fredrikstad 1-0 at Selhurst Park in the opening leg of their Conference League play-off. Palace's first foray into major European competition was overshadowed by the absence of Eberechi Eze – understood to be edging closer to completing a £60million move to Arsenal – from the team sheet. Eagles boss Oliver Glasner had initially insisted Eze would start, but told Channel 5 before the contest that the 27-year-old had phoned him on Thursday morning to say he did not feel well. Mateta finally nodded the hosts in front in the 54th minute, and the Frenchman's goal proved the winner after the Eagles could not capitalise on any further chances. Captain Marc Guehi, still linked to Liverpool, was in the starting line-up. After lifting the FA Cup in May, Glasner's men expected to be playing in the Europa League, where they would have qualified directly for the league phase. Their ensuing, convoluted battle over multi-club ownership and subsequent demotion by UEFA to the Conference League ended with the Court of Arbitration for Sport's rejection of their appeal, with Nottingham Forest, their opponents for Sunday's Premier League home opener, expected to take the Europa League place. Palace fans – whose club were as a result forced into this two-legged tie – expressed their displeasure in the form of a 'UEFA Mafia' banner and bleep-worthy chants directed at the European governing body and Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis. If anyone expected a dominant start from the Community Shield holders, facing last season's eighth-place Eliteserien finishers, it was not the opening they predicted. It took nearly 15 minutes before the hosts created their first chance, when Guehi nodded over from Jefferson Lerma's long throw. They began to display more intent around the halfway point in the period when Mateta directed a shot straight at Fredrikstad keeper Martin Borsheim, Lerma volleyed goalwards, Adam Wharton fired through a crowd and Justin Devenny – Eze's replacement – tried to tee up Ismaila Sarr. The hosts breathed a sigh of relief when Sondre Sorlokk caught Ulrik Fredriksen with a cross – a touch that might have led to a goal at a slightly different trajectory before Mateta caught the post with a deflected effort from distance. Palace were knocking at the door before the break, and there were chances for Will Hughes and Devenny – who nodded over – soon after the restart. Mateta broke the deadlock after Fredrikstad failed to deal with Borna Sosa's throw-in. Palace took advantage as the ball eventually fell for Hughes, who took a shot. Mateta saw an opportunity as the effort came toward him, guiding it into the back of Borsheim's net as he nodded home the Eagles' first goal of the European campaign. Daniel Munoz nearly doubled Palace's lead, catching the outside of the right post with a header, Odsonne Edouard's effort struck a black shirt, and Lerma nodded wide – opportunities nearly proved more regrettable when Henrik Skogvold fired just past Dean Henderson's far post in stoppage time,.

Oliver Glasner believes Eberechi Eze has played his final Crystal Palace match
The Palace boss insisted Eze would start the Eagles' first leg against the Norwegian side at Selhurst Park – also their first foray into major European football – before Arsenal swooped in with a £60million deal. The transfer of 27-year-old, who had for a long time been linked to Tottenham, could be confirmed as early as this weekend, the PA news agency understands. However, on Thursday morning, Glasner revealed he received a phone call from Eze, who said he was not feeling well enough to play, forcing him to bring Northern Ireland international Justin Devenny into his starting XI. 'I'm responsible for Crystal Palace and I think he won't play for us again,' said Glasner when asked to confirm whether Eze was heading to the Emirates Stadium. 'So I have to prepare the team for Nottingham (Forest, in the Premier League on Sunday) and for the second leg against Fredrikstad, and I'm planning without Eberechi.' Quizzed as to whether Eze was feeling physically or mentally unwell, the Palace boss merely replied: 'You have to ask him. Maybe in a few days (you can ask).' Glasner also shared that he has never faced a situation where a player in Eze's situation had called to say they were unavailable. 'No,' Glasner confirmed. 'And I don't want it to happen anymore.' The drama and speculation around Eze – and his absence from Palace's starting XI – overshadowed the FA Cup holders' historic major European debut, which they won 1-0 after Jean-Philippe Mateta nodded home in the 54th minute. Glasner, who blamed late business for Palace's poor start last season, did not hold back when sharing his frustration about their lack of activity in the transfer window, so far signing just Croatian defender Borna Sosa for £2million and goalkeeper Walter Benitez on a free transfer. 'I can't do anything,' said Glasner. 'I can't sign a player's contract. We have to act. We need this. This is Crystal Palace's future. It's easy to add numbers, we need to add the right players. Can't beat a JP celebration at Selhurst 🖼️ — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) August 21, 2025 'The profile has been defined for months, for months. Also it's not surprising for everyone that Ebs left, because five days earlier we couldn't have done anything if he leaves (release clause). 'We knew that this chance is very high that this would happen, and honestly, I say it like it is, we missed the chance to replace him early enough. That's completely our fault, and nobody else's fault.' Speaking to Channel 5 after the victory, Palace chairman Steve Parish said: 'It is what it is. We've got to move past (it). He's been fantastic for the club. We all love him for what he's done and achieved, and we're pleased that he can go on and fulfil the other ambitions that he's got. 'The king is dead, long live the king. We have to move past it and we have to find other players to bring in that can support the rest of the team and Oliver.'

Josh Mulligan grabs late consolation to give Hibernian hope against Legia Warsaw
The visitors survived a few early scares before striker Jean-Pierre Nsame opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 34th minute following Rocky Bushiri's handball, and Pawel Wszolek fired in a second from close range in the third minute of added time. David Gray's side came out for the second half fired up to make amends and they got their reward in the 85th minute with a Mulligan strike. Hibs have no domestic game this weekend having taken the opportunity to postpone their league fixture in between the two legs of the play-off round. Gray will prepare his side well for the second leg in the Polish capital next week and they can travel with hope. Hibs, with goalkeeper Jordan Smith, Bushiri, Chris Cadden, Mulligan, Dylan Levitt and Kieron Bowie restored to the line-up, sprung out the traps at a packed Easter Road. There was only a minute gone when midfielder Mulligan burst into the Legia box and took a Martin Boyle pass but did not get his shot away as he was thwarted by diving keeper Kacper Tobiasz, who pushed an angled drive from Bowie away from danger moments later. Edward Iordanescu's side could not get out their own half initially, but a swift break in the 12th minute ended with Nsame's drive from close range blocked by Hibs defender Jack Iredale. Bowie missed the target with another chance but on the half-hour mark, in another impressive Legia counter, Smith brilliantly saved a powerful drive from Rafal Augustyniak before Bushiri threw himself to block a second effort from Vahan Bichakhchyan. However, there was a long VAR check for a penalty with the visitors claiming the ball had struck the Hibs defender's arm. Finnish referee Mohammad Al-Emara was eventually asked to check the pitchside monitor and then pointed to the spot and amid boos and jeers from the home fans, Nsame hammered his penalty high past Smith. The Polish side had grown into the game and there was more trouble for the Leith side in first-half stoppage time when Nsame's cross from the left was volleyed in by the unmarked Wszolek from a tight angle. Hibs fans were looking for a reaction from their side after the break and they forced some early pressure, with Bushiri heading a Jordan Obita corner over the crossbar. Gray made a triple substitution in the 53rd minute with Nicky Cadden, Jamie McGrath and Miguel Chaiwa on for Iredale, Josh Campbell and Levitt, which increased the tempo and had Legia scrambling to keep their clean sheet intact. Another incisive Legia attack in the 61st minute ended with Bartosz Kapustka curling the ball past Smith from 16 yards, but VAR ruled Wszolek was offside in the build-up. It was a relief for Hibs and their fans but they should have conceded again in the 72nd minute when Bichakhchyan found himself picked out only yards from goal, only to somehow slash over the bar. The ball continued to fly around the Legia penalty area and in the 83rd minute substitute Thibault Klidje missed a great chance when he headed wide from eight yards out. However, there would be late drama. After Tobiasz had made a terrific save from substitute Junior Hoilet's diving header, Mulligan drove the ball into the net to re-energise the crowd and although the second goal would not come, Hibs still have a fighting chance.
