"PM Modi Wants To Make Cholas Global, DMK Keeping Them Local": K Annamalai To NDTV
Former president of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit K Annamalai on Saturday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to make the Cholas"global".
Speaking to NDTV, a day ahead of PM Modi's visit to Tiruchirappalli to attend a mega festival to celebrate the legacy of Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I (1014-1044 CE), Mr Annamalai also slammed the ruling DMK, saying they want to keep Cholas "local".
"Tomorrow is going to be a very, very important day, not just for Tamil Nadu, but for the whole Bharat (India)," he said, referring to the event at the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its intricate sculptures, Chola bronzes, and ancient inscriptions.
It also commemorates 1,000 years of the maritime expedition of Rajendra Chola I to South East Asia, Mr Annamalai said.
He said that PM Modi, who is visiting Tamil Nadu straight after his "successful" trips to the UK and the Maldives, is trying to put Gangaikonda Cholapuram on the global map.
He also praised PM Modi for releasing a commemorative coin honouring Rajendra Chola I.
Mr Annamalai said Chief Minister MK Stalin-led DMK is "nervous" about PM Modi's tour as they have not done anything for the Chola dynasty.
"The DMK has never celebrated Cholas," he said, adding that no chief minister from the party has ever visited Gangaikonda Cholapuram, which was the capital city of the dynasty.
"When the PM is trying to take Cholas global, the DMK wants it to be local," he said.
Speaking on the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which are due next year, Mr Annamalai said the ruling DMK is set for a "historic defeat".
"DMK's days are numbered," he said.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district in Tamil Nadu wore a festive look on Saturday, a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to the ancient capital of the imperial Cholas built by Emperor Rajendra Chola I. The village and the Brihadisvara Temple, situated along the Tiruchi-Chidambaram National Highway, has been decked up with flags and garlands to welcome the Prime Minister, who will participate in the valediction of the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival marking the birth anniversary of Rajendra Chola I. Mr. Modi will release a commemorative coin in honour of the king, accepting a request made by R. Komagan, Chairman of the Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust. The king had built Gangaikonda Cholapuram along with the Brihadisvara Temple and the Cholagangam, a massive lake, after his victorious expedition to the Gangetic plains about 1,000 years ago. Reaffirming the Chola capital's link to the river, Mr. Modi would hand over a pot of water brought from the river Ganga to the temple priests. 'The Prime Minister will hand over the pot brought from Varanasi to the Sivachariars of the temple to perform abishekam,' Mr. Komagan told The Hindu. Heads of various Saivaite mutts in Tamil Nadu are also set to participate in the event. 'About 30 heads of Saivaite maths and sadhus will attend the event. A group of 44 oduvars will recite hymns from Thiruvasagam,' Mr. Komagan said. The Prime Minister will inspect a thematic photo exhibition on 'Saiva siddhanta and Chola Temple Arts', put up by the Archaeological Survey of India, which maintains the temple. Music composer Ilaiyaraaja will perform a 20-minute concert in the presence of Mr. Modi. After an overnight stay in Tiruchi, Mr. Modi will fly to Gangaikonda Cholapuram in a helicopter on Sunday morning. After offering prayers at the temple, he will participate in the public event. Mr. Modi is also expected to go on a roadshow from the helipad, set up near the Cholagangam, or Ponneri, to the temple. The village and the Brihadisvara Temple have been under security blanket with the deployment of over 2,000 police personnel. On Saturday, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat visited the temple and reviewed the arrangements.

BJP should shed ‘anti-BC' mindset: Minister Ponnam Prabhakar
Reiterating his charge that the BJP is infamous for its 'anti-BC' mindset since the Mandal Commission era, Minister for Transport and Backward Classes Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar has warned that BCs would not keep quiet if any attempts are made to obstruct the enhanced 42% quota for them in Telangana. Speaking to the media in Karimnagar on Saturday, Mr Prabhakar said the Congress party is the champion of social justice. The Telangana Assembly passed a Bill increasing reservation of BCs to 42%, he said, alleging that the BJP is conspiring to obstruct the move on one pretext or the other to jeopardise the interests of BCs. Asserting that the Congress party has the proven track record of championing the cause of BCs and other weaker sections, he alleged that the BJP earned notoriety for pursuing divisive politics and working against the interests of BCs since the era of the Mandal Commission. 'If the BJP is sincere for the empowerment of BCs, it should get the 42% quota Bill approved by the Centre and cooperate to ensure local body elections in the State before September 30, the timeframe set by the High Court to conduct the local body polls,' he added.

Trichy: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit and road show planned in Trichy on Sunday have set the stage for cadres and functionaries of AIADMK and BJP to smoothen out ruffles, if any, and work together ahead of the 2026 state assembly election. As BJP cadres have been joining AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami's ongoing 'Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom' state-wide campaign, AIADMK has vouched to mobilise cadres for PM's road show scheduled on Sunday morning. Palaniswami met Modi at the Trichy airport on his arrival from Tuticorin. He was accompanied by former ministers S P Velumani, K P Munusamy, and Natham Viswanathan.
