Mandya police intensify crackdown on drug abuse and peddling
Superintendent of police Mallikarjun Baladandi told TOI that soon after the Mysuru incident, they increased vigilance across the district and called known peddlers to check their activities and contacts. So far, they have found no links to the Mysuru cases, but they will continue to monitor the situation, he added.
Since Jan this year, Mandya police have booked 52 drug-related cases—22 involving the sale of ganja and the rest related to drug consumption, detected through blood tests.
Apart from summoning past offenders, police have convened meetings with station house officers and other officials, instructing them to keep a close watch on warehouses, godowns, and suspicious premises in their areas. Officers have also been asked to increase patrols and engage with local communities to collect intelligence on possible drug activity.
The department is placing special emphasis on awareness initiatives. "We will launch district-wide drives to spread awareness and curb drug abuse next week. Schools, colleges, and community groups will be involved to ensure the message reaches every section of society," SP Baladandi said.
Police have urged the public to cooperate by providing information on suspicious activities, stressing that community participation is key to eradicating drug abuse in the district.
