Morocco, Panama Explore New Chapter in Economic Partnership

Morocco World8 hours ago

Rabat – In a meeting on Monday, in Rabat, Moroccan Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Omar Hejira and Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vasquez agreed to deepen economic ties between their two countries.
The discussions mark a new chapter in what the two ministers described as a timely and mutually beneficial coalition.
The encounter noted the shared ambition to bring bilateral relations up to the level of trust and opportunity already reflected in their political dialogue.
While Morocco and Panama come from different regions, their paths, according to Martinez-Acha Vasquez, intersect at a critical moment.
'Morocco and Panama find themselves at turning points in their development,' he said after the meeting. 'We face similar priorities, railway infrastructure, port expansions, electrical interconnection, and hospital construction. These are not abstract ideas; they are concrete projects shaping our countries.'
Hejira described the current momentum as more than symbolic. Diplomatic understanding now moves toward economic reality, with Morocco looking to anchor new partnerships in strategic sectors such as logistics, agriculture, shipbuilding, and trade in services.
'We do not speak only of goodwill,' Hejira said. 'We build on it. Private sector actors from both countries now prepare to move into the Panamanian market and bring that energy back into Morocco.'
Plans are already in motion. Morocco and Panama will soon host joint meetings to lay out targeted trade initiatives and set clear goals for cooperation.
On Monday, Panama reaffirmed its firm support for Morocco's territorial integrity and the Autonomy Plan as the most credible path forward to resolve the dispute over Western Sahara.
Following his meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Martinez-Acha Vasquez described Morocco's 2007 autonomy initiative as the only viable solution.
He emphasized that Panama's position remains clear and unwavering, supporting the Moroccan initiative as a serious and lasting basis for resolving the conflict. Tags: economic tiesMorocco economyMorocco Panama tiesWestern sahara

Morocco, Ethiopia Deepen Ties Through New Defense Agreement

Rabat – Morocco and Ethiopia signed a military cooperation agreement today during a high-level visit to Rabat. The Ethiopian Minister of Defense, Aysha Mohammed Mussa, led a senior delegation to Morocco, where she met with Abdeltif Loudyi, Minister Delegate in charge of the National Defense Administration. The visit marks a new phase in the evolving partnership between the two countries. Discussions revolved around a mutual desire to broaden cooperation beyond diplomatic pleasantries. The newly signed agreement lays the groundwork for concrete collaboration across a range of military sectors, from training and research to military healthcare and joint exercises. The two sides agreed to establish a joint military commission to oversee this cooperation and to meet alternately in Rabat and Addis Ababa. The meeting also brought together General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and Commander of the Southern Zone, reflecting the depth of Morocco's institutional commitment to the partnership. For both countries, the deal is about positioning themselves as reliable contributors to peace and stability in Africa. The two sides also acknowledged the broader context in which their cooperation takes place, a continent that continues to grapple with security challenges but also carries the weight of immense potential. In that context, Morocco and Ethiopia see themselves as part of a generation of African states willing to take regional responsibility into their own hands. The Moroccan side took the opportunity to share its experience with South-South cooperation, a policy Morocco has championed across several fields, and in turn, brought to the table its influence in East Africa and its aspirations for greater regional engagement. Both countries expressed interest in regular visits, more active dialogue, and real on-the-ground cooperation. Tags: military defenseMorocco defense systemMorocco Ethiopia ties

Industrial Sovereignty: Morocco Selects 1,839 Projects Worth $12.49 Billion

Doha – On Monday, Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour announced that 1,839 industrial projects have been selected as part of efforts to boost Morocco's industrial sovereignty. The projects, selected up until June 10, represent a total investment of MAD 124.9 billion ($12.49 billion). They aim to strengthen domestic production capacities, reduce Morocco's reliance on imports, and are expected to generate 179,825 jobs across key manufacturing sectors. Speaking at the House of Representatives, Mezzour, through Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Omar Hejira, stated that these projects are expected to create 179,825 jobs. He stressed that this initiative seeks to increase domestic manufacturing of goods that can be produced in Morocco as a substitute for imported products. Mezzour also pointed out the significant progress made by the industrial sector under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. He attributed this to the various industrial plans implemented over the past two decades. The minister noted that this momentum has been further reinforced following the COVID-19 pandemic through the adoption of a new strategy. This strategy aims to position Morocco as a decarbonized industrial platform, enhance its industrial sovereignty, improve competitiveness, and reduce the trade deficit. The selection of these projects represents a key step towards achieving these objectives and bolstering Morocco's industrial self-sufficiency. Tags: Moroccan IndustryRyad Mezzour

Moroccan Students Contribute Over €133 Million to Spain's Economy

Rabat – Spain is not only getting revenues from trade exports but also from education, as over 7,263 Moroccans were enrolled in Spanish universities in the last academic year. Data shared with Morocco World News from StudiesIn estimates that a Moroccan student enrolled in a public university in Valladolid could pay around €8,360 in tuition over four years. This is in addition to living costs that could range between €7,200 to €14,400. The study shows that studying at a private university like Madrid or Barcelona would require higher budgets. ' Using a conservative estimate of €15,560 per student (based on affordable cities like Valladolid), the total spending by the 7,263 Moroccan students currently studying in Spain would be: 7,263 students × €15,560 = approximately €113 million over four years,' the source said. This means that the number could exceed €200 million if many Moroccan students are based in cities with higher living and tuition costs, or if they are enrolled in private universities. StudiesIn also shared the overall number of international students that signed up for Spanish-based universities, noting that the European country welcomed a record of 241,777 international students in the 2022-2023 academic year, up from 224,080 in the previous season. This also represents a strong rebound from 175,382 students in 2020-2021 during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Moroccan students are drawn to Spain for a variety of reasons,' the study said, noting the availability of academic programs in both Spanish and English. The factors also include a 'strong reputation for high-quality public and private universities' as well as the opportunity to live in a diverse environment with international student communities from different backgrounds. 'Spain's geographic closeness, shared history, linguistic, and cultural familiarity also make it a particularly appealing choice for Moroccan families,' the same source added. also highlights the costs Spanish universities charge students depending on the region. In Madrid, a bachelor's degree could cost between €66,200 in a public university, while the number could be nearly double in a private university (€105,200).' In Barcelona, public schooling could be similar to Madrid's rates or more, ranging between €62,240 and €95,040 at public universities. But the budget is estimated at more than €165,760 in private universities. Four-year costs for a bachelor's degree in Valencia at a public university range between €50,000 and €69,000, while the budget could exceed €133,000 at private universities. In Seville, the total budget could be between €30,000 and €60,000 in a public school. For StudiesIn, Valladolid is known for affordability, as public university students can spend between €15,560 to €22,760, while private university students may pay between €16,800 and €134,400 for four years.
