Dubai achieves world's lowest electricity Customer Minutes Lost (CML) at 0.94 minutes per year, breaking its 2023 record

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), announced that DEWA achieved the world's lowest electricity Customer Minutes Lost (CML) in 2024, recording just 0.94 minutes per customer. This breaks its record of 1.06 minutes in 2023 and is significantly lower than the 15-minute average of leading European utilities.

We have reduced the Customer Minutes Lost in Dubai from 6.88 minutes per year in 2012 to just 0.94 minutes in 2024. This emphasises our leadership in innovation and adopting the latest disruptive technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to enhance DEWA's resilience, agility and readiness to meet the growing demand for electricity and water in Dubai,' said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.
'The Smart Grid, which we are implementing in stages with AED 7 billion investments up to 2035, has been instrumental in achieving this milestone. It provides advanced features, including enhanced energy transmission and distribution efficiency, reduced losses and improved electric load management. A key programme launched under the Smart Grid is the Automatic Smart Grid Restoration System, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa. It increases the control, management and monitoring of the power network. Operating around the clock without human intervention, it uses smart, innovative and centralised systems to locate faults, isolate them and automatically restore service, enhancing grid automation, fault detection and rapid service restoration,' added Al Tayer.

Kallas' call with Abdelatty precedes her anticipated nuclear talks with the Iranian foreign minister in Geneva on Friday, alongside the foreign ministers of Germany, France, and Britain. Media reports suggest that Kallas and the E3's meeting with Iran's top diplomat will address the latest developments and urge Iran to return to the negotiation table. The aerial conflict between Israel and Iran, now in its seventh day, began after Tel Aviv launched an air campaign against Tehran on Friday, claiming that Iran was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon. Furthermore, Abdelatty outlined Egypt's collaborative efforts with Qatar and the US to reinstate a ceasefire in the war-ravaged Gaza and facilitate the delivery of crucial humanitarian aid. He urged the EU to provide essential humanitarian support to address the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Gaza caused by Israel's starvation policy, the statement added. FM Abdelatty further stressed the importance of advancing a political resolution for the Palestinian cause, advocating for establishing an independent Palestinian state based on the two-state solution as the only viable route to regional stability. Egypt-EU partnership During a recent call, Abdelatty welcomed the European Parliament's final approval of the second tranche of the EU's financial support package for Egypt, worth 4 billion euros. This tranche is part of a larger 5 billion euro budget support package that was agreed upon in March 2024 following the Joint Declaration on the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership between Egypt and the EU in Cairo. The European support package, signed by both parties in 2024, totals approximately 7.4 billion euros and will be disbursed by 2027. The package comprises 5 billion euros in budget support, 1.8 billion euros in investment guarantees for European and Egyptian companies investing in Egypt, and approximately 600 million euros for training, technical assistance, and capacity building. Abdelatty expressed appreciation for Kallas and the EU's foreign service's efforts, describing this approval as a testament to the commitment to strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between Egypt and the EU. Foreign Work Permits in Egypt Rise Sharply to Over 22,000 in 2024 Europeans and Asians made up 70% of Egypt's foreign workforce in 2024, with most employed as managers, scientific specialists, or technicians across key sectors like energy and construction. Foreign work permits in Egypt rose significantly in 2024, with a total of 22,909 foreign nationals receiving authorization to work in the country. This marks a 32% increase compared to the 17,357 permits issued in 2023, according to newly released official figures. Of the total permits granted, 43.7%—equivalent to 10,003 individuals—were issued to first-time applicants, while 56.3%, or 12,906 individuals, had their existing work permits renewed. European nationals made up the largest share of foreign workers in Egypt at 38.4%, totalling 8,798 individuals. They were followed by non-Arab Asians at 31.5% (7,224 individuals), Arab nationals at 21.1% (4,826), non-Arab Africans at 4.5% (1,026), and Americans at 3.8% (868). Workers from Oceania accounted for 0.5%, or 110 individuals. Permits were issued through several administrative channels, with Labour Directorates accounting for nearly half at 48.9% (11,197 permits). Investment Offices issued 27.9% (6,392), Company Offices 19.9% (4,558), and Petroleum Offices 3.3% (762). In terms of occupations, managers represented the largest group at 36.4% (8,343 workers). Scientific specialists followed at 23.8% (5,453), with technicians and assistant specialists comprising 15.4% (3,530). Foreign nationals were primarily employed in public administration, defense, and social insurance, which together accounted for 24.4% of the total, or 5,587 workers. Other major sectors included electricity, gas, and steam supply at 20.6% (4,726 workers), construction at 16% (3,676), and wholesale, retail trade, and repair services at 12.5% (2,859).

US firm VXI to create 4,000 jobs in Egypt in $135m expansion
American outsourcing firm VXI plans to create 4,000 new jobs in Egypt as part of a $135m expansion that aims to increase its local workforce to 5,000 specialists by the end of 2028, the company has announced. The expansion plans were detailed during a visit by Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, to VXI's Cairo headquarters. He was accompanied by company executives including Global Chief Operating Officer Ryan Collins and Global Chief People Officer Erika King. Talaat said the visit was part of the ministry's focus on supporting international outsourcing companies operating in Egypt. He stated that encouraging investment in the sector was a key pillar of the government's strategy to boost digital exports and solidify the country's status as a global hub for these services. 'We are encouraging investment in the outsourcing sector as one of the main pillars for strengthening Egypt's position as a preferred destination for international companies in this field,' Talaat said. He noted that Egypt is seeing continuous expansion in the number of outsourcing centres due to efforts in digital skills development and providing incentives. 'We are continuing to cooperate with companies in the outsourcing field to expand the base of human cadres trained in the matrix of skills these companies require.' VXI's global COO, Ryan Collins, said the company's growth in the country highlighted its strategic advantages. 'Our expansion in Egypt reflects the huge potential of the region, not just for the competitive cost of operations in Egypt, but as a centre teeming with multilingual talent and a strategic location that provides access to European, Middle Eastern, and African markets,' Collins said. 'The rapid growth we have achieved confirms the excellence and quality of Egyptian talent and its ability to provide distinguished and scalable customer experience solutions from Cairo.' The expansion was welcomed by the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA). Its CEO, Ahmed El-Zaher, said the move demonstrated growing international confidence in the Egyptian economy and the strength of its outsourcing sector. He added that investments like those from VXI support the state's goals of increasing digital service exports and raising the digital economy's contribution to the gross domestic product by creating thousands of specialised jobs and transferring global operational expertise to the local market. During his tour of the facility, Talaat spoke with several young employees about their professional experiences and the skills they had acquired. He affirmed the state's commitment to enabling young people with digital skills for careers in the outsourcing sector, which he described as one of the most promising fields for professional growth. VXI was established in Egypt in December 2023 and became fully operational in March 2024. From its Cairo office, it provides services in six languages to clients in Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the United States. Ahmed Bahgat, VXI's Vice President of Operations for Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East, said: 'VXI Egypt appreciates the Egyptian government's support and its interest in the outsourcing industry, which has contributed to placing Egypt among the top three most attractive countries for foreign investment in this field.'
