Central and State governments should spend more funds on education, says VIT chancellor
In his presidential address during a discussion on 'Empowering Government School Students for Academic Excellence' in Vellore, Mr. Viswanathan said that despite the National Education Policy 2020 aiming to increase the government spending on education to 50% of the GDP by 2035, in the 2025-26 financial budget, spending on education by the Centre is less than three percent.
'Cuba spends 11.5% of its GDP on education, securing the top position among countries spending on education whereas India ranks 155th. Government spending on education should be increased,' he said.
The Chancellor added that the North Arcot district, which comprised the present-day Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Tiruvannamalai districts, used to be economically and educationally backward many years ago. Public initiatives like scholarships and efforts of the State government have helped reduce this backwardness and increase students' enrolment in schools and colleges.
Currently, the gross enrolment Ratio (GER) of Tamil Nadu is over 50% as against the national average of 28%.
The discussion, jointly organised by VIT and the Directorate of School Education, was conducted to address the challenges faced in Class 12. On the occasion, S. Kannappan, Director, School Education Department, and V. R. Subbulaxmi, Vellore Collector, also spoke.

When it comes to engineering education in India, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) often steal the spotlight, but beyond the IITs lie some of the remarkable institutions that offer top-tier programmes, especially in Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC). Some of these non-IIT colleges have carved out a reputation for their curriculum, impressive placement records, and industry partnerships. These are the top five institutes and their EC programmes. The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at NIT Tiruchirappalli was established in 1964. It offers a BTech programme, two specialisations (Power Systems and Power Electronics), and research degrees (M.S. and Ph.D.). It was the first at NIT Trichy to receive QIP status for PhD programmes. On the recruitment front, the department boasts excellent placement records, with over 100 companies offering opportunities each year. More than 90 per cent of students secure placements within three months of the placement season. The highest package has reached Rs 52 LPA, with an average package of Rs 19 LPA. In addition, over 25 students have secured admissions in top QS-ranked universities abroad in the past two years. Some of the major recruiters include Google, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, ExxonMobil, NVIDIA, and EY. The School of Electronics Engineering (SENSE) at VIT offers diverse undergraduate programmes, including in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and VLSI Design and Technology. Postgraduate offerings span Automotive Electronics, Embedded Systems, IoT and Sensor Systems, and more. In the 2024–25 cycle, VIT Chennai recorded 3,160 total offers, with 2,192 unique offers. The dream offers stood at 763, and super-dream offers numbered 936. While the overall highest package across VIT campuses in 2025 reached Rs 1 Crore, placements specific to the Chennai campus peaked at Rs 59 LPA, offered by KRYPTO. According to NIRF 2025 data, the median salary for UG (4-year) graduates stood at approximately Rs 8.99 LPA The Department of Electrical Engineering at Jadavpur University, established in 1906, is one of the oldest departments. The department offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, supported by six specialised laboratories that serve as innovation hubs. In the 2021–22 recruitment season at Jadavpur University, the latest provided on the official website, the overall undergraduate (4-year) engineering placements recorded 899 students securing jobs and a median salary package of Rs 10 LPA. The Electrical Engineering department had 93 offers made to a batch of 109 students, reflecting a placement rate of about 85 per cent. Earlier affiliated with the University of Madras, SRM Institute of Science and Technology's EC department was established in 1992–1993. The department offers various programmes under it, like Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electric Vehicle Technology, Power Electronics and Drives, in Power Systems and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Allied Fields. In the academic year 2020-2024, the Institute saw a placement percentage of 70 per cent, with 35 per cent of dream and super dream offers. With recruiters like Cult Sport, ET Media Labs, IBM, IFB industries, Kalavium, KPMG, TCS, Torrent, among others. In the said period, 89 students enrolled for the course, with 63 unique offers, 75 placement offers and 71 placement percentage. Annamalai University's Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department in the 2024 placement season saw over 1,100 undergraduate students and 865 postgraduate students placed across various sectors. Top recruiters include L&T, Tata Projects, and NCC Limited. The median salary ranged from Rs 1.62 LPA for UG students to Rs 13.72 LPA for PG students.

SEP spells out broader vision, but silent on panel's key recommendations
CHENNAI: More than a year after the Justice D Murugesan-led committee submitted its recommendations for formulating the State Education Policy (SEP), Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday released the SEP for school education alone with the policy on higher education yet to be readied. While the released policy articulated the state's broader vision to make its school system future-ready with focus on inclusivity, equity, and safety with many progressive measures, it has remained silent or left room for ambiguity on a few key recommendations made by the Justice Murugesan panel. For instance, the panel, which worked on its recommendations for over two years after being constituted in April 2022, said that formal schooling can begin at Class 1 on completion of five years of age. In contrast, the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP), against which Tamil Nadu wanted to formulate its own policy, recommends six years. TN enrols students in Class 1 at the age of five at present. However, the SEP has not clearly spelled out an age despite a section of parents expressing concerns about the difference between SEP and NEP, particularly while enrolling their wards to schools that do not follow state board. It is noteworthy that the latest ASER report (2024) said that 61.3% of children in TN entered Class 1 at the age of six, well above the national average of 40.2%, indicating a gradual shift towards the NEP's recommended age.

Government approves MERITE scheme to strengthen technical institutes
The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to implement the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) scheme in 275 institutions across the country – 175 engineering institutes and 100 polytechnic colleges – Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a Cabinet briefing on Friday (August 8, 2025). A government statement said MERITE would work as a Central Sector Scheme with a total financial implication of ₹4,200 crore to be spent in five years, between 2025-26 and 2029-30, adding that ₹2,100 crore will come as an external assistance from the World Bank in the form of a loan. The Education Ministry, in its statement, said the scheme is meant to 'improve the quality, equity, and governance' in the selected technical institutes by interventions aligned with the National Education Policy 2020. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the scheme and posted on X, saying, 'Research, innovation and skilling will be significantly boosted with this Cabinet decision to support 'Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education'.' Education Minister Dharmender Pradhan said the scheme will empower and provide employability to over 7.5 lakh students in India, adding, 'Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji has placed unprecedented focus on transforming and revolutionising India's education landscape.' The outcomes of the scheme include preparing digitalization strategies in participating States/UTs, developing guidelines for multidisciplinary programmes in technical courses, increasing learning, employability skills, and transition rates across student groups, strengthening research and innovation among others, the government statement said. It said that there will be a focus on 'development of future academic administrators, especially women faculty'. The project appraisal report prepared by the World Bank for the scheme in 2023 had said that the 'overall research productivity of faculty members in engineering education is low, and the research environment needs improvement' and that 'most engineering institutions have weak research and innovation linkages with industry and society'. The Education Ministry said on Friday (August 8, 2025) that the scheme's outcomes will include better quality assurance and governance mechanisms, an increase in accreditation, better technical education institutions, and a relevant market-aligned curriculum, among others. It will be implemented in government engineering institutions and polytechnics in all States and UTs, adding that institutions like IITs, IIMs, and regulatory bodies such as AICTE, NBA, will 'play a significant role in the scheme implementation'. The interventions for students will include offering internships, updating curricula to align with the industry, organising faculty development programmes and setting up research hubs. Support will also be given for 'incubation and innovation centres, skill and maker labs, and language workshops'.
