Long-running Swedish extreme metal act Katatonia have parted ways with founding guitarist Anders Nyström after 34 years.
Singer-guitarist Jonas Renkse, the other founding member of Katatonia, announced the news via Instagram on Monday (March 17th), citing 'creative preferences' and 'personal schedules' as reasons for the split:
'Anders Nyström and I are going our separate ways. A decision not taken lightly, but for everyone to thrive and move forward with their own creative preferences as well as personal schedules this has become the realistic option. Anders and I started the band in 1991 and his impact on the band's trademark sound is undeniable. As bleak as this sounds, and is, it's further evidence of life getting in the way of our preferred plans. I wish Anders all the best for the future.'
Nyström then confirmed his exit from the band late Monday (March 17th), posting on Instagram: 'Sad but true. The time has come for me to confirm that the roads ahead Jonas [Renkse] and I have chosen for both Katatonia and ourselves have grown too wide and far apart, and as a result, our long-term collaboration has drawn to a close.'
The guitarist's statement delved into the specifics of the aforementioned creative differences, expressing that he wanted to re-explore Katatonia's early/middle discography — apparently a point of contention with Renkse.
'Needless to say, I still love ALL our albums,' wrote Nyström, 'but with the early stuff being neglected for so many years, a feeling of having 'unfinished business' with a style that goes far back to our roots has just grown stronger and stronger. I can't help feeling adamant that songs from our early-mid discography deserve to be equally acknowledged and likewise targeted for our live show repertoire, the essential medium where the past should always be alive! Unfortunately, that door has been kept shut and left everything we did pre-millennium in a void.'
Renkse and Nyström formed Katatonia in 1991, but had actually been working on music together since 1987. Their early releases explored a primitive black metal style. The duo eventually filled out the band's lineup for what would become Katatonia's debut album, 1993's Dance of December Souls, which is considered a melodic black metal classic.
The band went on to release a string of lauded extreme metal albums before shifting to a dominantly alternative/gothic metal sound in the following decades — the most recent album being 2023's Sky Void of Stars.

AP PHOTOS: BTS stars Jimin and Jung Kook discharged from military service

YEONCHEON, South Korea (AP) — Hundreds of fans gathered Wednesday to catch a glimpse of K-pop superstars Jimin and Jung Kook, the latest and final members of BTS to be discharged from South Korea's mandatory military service. Supporters traveled from around the world to the public sports ground where the meet-and-greet took place. Color-wrapped buses bearing BTS members' faces lined the streets while red and yellow balloons floated above and a decorated food truck provided free coffee and water, adding to the festive atmosphere. A day earlier, RM and V each saluted upon their release in Chuncheon City as about 200 fans, some of whom traveled from Mexico, Turkey and Brazil, cheered. Jin, the oldest member of the K-pop supergroup, was discharged from the army in June 2024. J-Hope was discharged in October. The seventh member, Suga, is fulfilling his duty as a social service agent, an alternative to military service. The seven BTS members plan to reunite as a group sometime in 2025. Anaesi, a fan from Portugal, displayed a colorful tattoo featuring a golden shield emblazoned with 'ARMY,' along with BTS members' names in Korean. She said the group 'saved' her from depression. 'So for me BTS is my angel,' she said. ___ This is a photo gallery curated by AP photo editors.

Former Newsboys Singer Michael Tait's Instagram ‘Confession' Explained

Wondering why Michael Tait is making headlines across the Christian music world? The former Newsboys frontman recently admitted to serious misconduct. A years-long investigation had revealed allegations of drug abuse and sexual assault. Michael Tait's 'confession' followed a detailed report involving multiple alleged victims. Here's what we know about the allegations and Michael Tait's 'confession.' On June 10, Michael Tait shared a post on Instagram titled 'My Confession.' He admitted to drug use and unwanted sexual advances on men. His statement followed the release of an investigative article by The Roys Report, which accused Tait of misconduct over a span of two decades. Tait wrote, 'Recent reports of my reckless and destructive behavior, including drug and alcohol abuse and sexual activity are sadly, largely true.' In the post, Tait confessed, 'For some two decades I used and abused cocaine, consumed far too much alcohol, and, at times, touched men in an unwanted sensual way.' He said he made no excuses, adding, 'While I might dispute certain details in the accusations against me, I do not dispute the substance of them.' He also acknowledged, 'I was, for the most part, living two distinctly different lives.' Tait left Newsboys abruptly in January 2025. On June 4, The Roys Report revealed three men accused Tait of assault during tours in 2004, 2010, and 2014. Two said he fondled them after drinking. One alleged non-consensual touching after Tait invited him to share a bed. Newsboys responded in a June 5 statement, writing, 'We are horrified, heartbroken, and angry… we feel as if we and our families have been deceived for the last fifteen years.' K-LOVE and other Christian radio networks paused airplay for Newsboys and DC Talk music after the story broke. Tait wrote that he had entered a treatment facility in Utah earlier this year and had been sober since. 'I accept the consequences of my sin and am committed to continuing the hard work of repentance and healing,' he stated. He concluded by apologizing to those hurt by his actions.
