PILIBHIT: A multi-agency workshop on the Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act, 2022, was organised by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) in Lakhimpur on Sunday.
The event, held under the initiative 'Strengthening India's Wildlife Crime Prevention and Law Enforcement Measures along the Indo-Nepal Border' and supported by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), brought together judicial officers, forest officials, and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel.
The workshop underscored the need for stronger collaboration in curbing wildlife crimes.
The event featured two technical sessions. In the first, WTI CEO Jose Louies highlighted organised transnational trafficking networks and pointed to 62 convictions secured in the Terai Landscape with the help of WTI legal consultants. He raised concern over a renewed surge in tiger trade and offered a detailed overview of India's illegal wildlife trade (IWT), particularly the illegal pet trade and its ecological impact.
He urged enforcement agencies to prioritise the issue.
The second session, led by Delhi high court advocate Lovish Sharma, focused on recent amendments to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, including the integration of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). He called the move a 'landmark change', noting that it now offers protection to over 40,000 species globally.

HC frees Margadarsi from criminal liability in 18-yr-old case

Hyderabad: In a major relief to the successors of the Margadarsi group, founded by the late media baron Ch Ramoji Rao, Telangana high court on Monday quashed the criminal cases filed against Margadarsi Financiers by the former Andhra Pradesh govt in 2008. A division bench comprising Justice P Sam Koshy and Justice K Sujana ruled that the case stood abated following the death of Ramoji Rao last year. The court held that in the absence of the main accused, further prosecution of the company could not continue effectively. The ruling thus brings a long-pending legal battle to a close, nearly 18 years after the original case was filed. The firm, however, argued that it was functioning as a Hindu joint family business, which is not prohibited under law, and that the restrictions cited in the RBI Act applied only to non-banking financial companies. The RBI opposed this argument, asserting that the charges were against the corporate entity, not just Ramoji Rao. It said the business operations of Margadarsi Financiers were still active, and the legal question of whether it had accepted deposits in violation of the RBI Act remained unresolved. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Biggest Real Estate Discounts Ever at M3M India. However, Justice Koshy, announcing the court's decision, stated that prosecution could not move forward in the absence of the key individual accused and allowed the company's plea. Margadarsi was represented by a team of senior advocates, including S Nagamurthy, Mukul Rohatgi, and Siddharth Luthra. The RBI was represented by senior counsel L Ravichander, and the AP govt by public prosecutor Palle Nageshwar Rao. The high court also closed the petitions filed by the current management of the company seeking to be made parties in the case. Since the main petition was allowed and the criminal cases quashed, their applications were declared closed.

20 peacocks found dead in Tumakuru; probe on

Bengaluru: After the national animal, it's the national bird that met a gory end in Karnataka. A month after the shocking killing of five tigers at MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, near Mysuru, as many as 20 peacocks were found dead in Tumakuru district, 120km from Bengaluru, over the weekend. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Forest minister Eshwar Khandre has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident reported from Hanumanthapura village in Midigeshi hobli of Madhugiri taluk early Saturday. Stating that the govt has taken a serious note of the incident — which is "the third such killing of wildlife with poison in a month" — the minister said the probe will find out whether miscreants used pesticide to kill peacocks or the birds accidentally consumed insecticide sprayed on the crops. "As soon as villagers spotted peacock carcasses, they alerted the range forest officer (RFO). We rushed to the spot. While the first carcass was spotted next to an outlet of a village lake, the others were found in a 600-metre radius," said a forest officer. A team of veterinary officers inspected the area. G Shashidhar, deputy conservator of forests (DCF), Tumakuru district, told TOI they have registered a case under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. "We have recovered three male and 17 female peacocks, and their samples have been sent for forensic tests. The cause of the death is unclear yet, though the theories doing the rounds include consumption of poisonous feed or seeds sown in the fields. The lab report will throw light on the incident," Shashidhar said. Khandre instructed chief wildlife warden PC Ray to submit a report in five days and asked him to immediately audit the death of any wildlife species categorised under schedule 1 or 2 of the Wildlife Act and submit a report henceforth. A villager said farmers usually treat the seeds with insecticide or fungicide before sowing to save them from insects or worms. "Perhaps, the peacocks consumed these seeds and died," he said.

Gujarat HC grants relief to news anchor accused in defamation, atrocities case after complaint by senior Congress leader

The Gujarat High Court on Monday granted relief to an Ahmedabad-based news anchor in a case of defamation and atrocity, filed by Congress leader Dr Tushar Chaudhary, based on the assurance of the Additional Public Prosecutor that the journalist will be served a notice of 15 days in case the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest her. Justice Nirzar Desai was hearing the petition by Gopi Maniar-Ghanghar, anchor of Ahmedabad-based Nirbhay News Channel, for quashing and setting aside the FIR lodged at Tapi District, based on Chaudhary's complaint under Section 356 (Defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and various sections of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Chaudhary is the newly appointed Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in Gujarat Assembly. The court order stated, 'Public Prosecutor Hardik Dave has made a statement before this Court upon instructions received by the Nikita Shiroya (SC/ST Cell Tapi Vyara) that… the investigation is at very initial stage and therefore, it would serve the end of justice if this Court records the statement of learned Public Prosecutor that in case, during the course of investigation, if the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest the present applicant, she will be given a clear notice of fifteen days and upon receipt of the notice…' The court further said, 'The applicant would be at liberty to avail appropriate remedy so as to take remedial measure to seek relief against her proposed arrest. Such a period would start from the date of receipt of the notice by the present applicant.' Chaudhary's complaint is also against Jagdish Mehta, group editor of Rajkot-based Headlines News channel. Chaudhary has alleged that the journalists had defamed him and his deceased father, former Gujarat Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary. In the FIR, the Congress MLA from Khedbrahma has alleged that in a show aired on July 22 on Nirbhay News, Ghanghar made an objectionable statement against him. He said Mehta consented to the statements, which were 'defamatory for him and the entire tribal community'. Ghanghar's advocate Utkarsh Dave said, '…Ghanghar… was the interviewer, who does not have control over what the other person is going to say… We will proceed with legal remedy in case the notice for arrest is issued.'
