MK Stalin To Launch Big Health Outreach Campaign, Months Ahead Of Assembly Polls
With just eight months to go for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Chief Minister MK Stalin is set to launch a major health outreach campaign on Saturday, marking the second large-scale public initiative by his government in recent months.
The new programme, focused on preventive healthcare, aims to screen and support adults over 40 who may be silently battling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes and hypertension but are not actively seeking treatment. Focusing on "From Prevention to Wellness," the scheme targets 10 lakh people through 1,164 diagnostic medical camps across urban, semi-urban, rural, and tribal pockets of Tamil Nadu.
Officials say the camps - equipped with modern diagnostic tools-will run until February 2026, with 15 camps planned in Chennai alone. Each participant will receive a tech-enabled health check-up, and results can be accessed via a unique barcode, allowing for digital tracking and follow-up care.
The initiative comes on the heels of another flagship programme- " Ungaludan Stalin (Stalin With You)", under which 45 government services are being delivered directly at people's doorsteps. Both efforts are seen as part of the DMK government's strategy to deepen citizen engagement and consolidate its welfare-centric image ahead of the elections.
More than 20 government departments and District Collectors will coordinate the implementation of the new health campaign, which aims to bridge gaps in awareness and access to preventive care.
"This is not just about health; it's about reaching every household with meaningful government presence," said a senior official involved in the initiative. "We want to ensure no one slips through the cracks-especially those who ignore early signs of serious conditions."

KRISHNAGIRI: The 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam' programme has benefited a total of 6.57 lakh people in Krishnagiri district since inception in August 2021. The program, which provides doorstep healthcare, was inaugurated by Chief Minister MK Stalin at Samanapalli village near Shoolagiri. The scheme has helped people with hypertension (HTN), diabetes mellitus (DM), both HTN and DM, palliative care, physiotherapy, and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). According to Krishnagiri District Health Officer Dr G Ramesh Kumar, "Krishnagiri district's population is 21.23 lakh. During the programme, 16.06 lakh people over 18 years old were screened for the first time. Among them, 6.57 lakh people were diagnosed with HTN (3.37 lakh), DM (1.57 lakh), both HTN and DM (1.32 lakh), palliative care (13,178), physiotherapy (13,161), and CAPD (8)." He also noted that a total of 147 Mid-Level Health Providers (MLHPs) and 239 Women Health Volunteers (WHVs) were involved. He added that among the ten blocks, Hosur City Municipal Corporation (HCMC), and Krishnagiri Municipality, most HTN cases were reported in HCMC at 25.19% (52,240 people). The Uthangarai/Singarapettai block recorded 24.90% (33,373), and Thally/Kakkadhasam block had 22.57% (35,337). The lowest rate was in Mekalachinnampalli/Krishnagiri Rural, at 14.23% (18,279).

Leaders hail work of visionary scientist M.S. Swaminathan
The immunisation programme led by the country's first Health Minister, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, and the Green Revolution initiated by M.S. Swaminathan were the reasons for the decrease in the death rate in India, former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi said in New Delhi on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). Speaking at the launch of The Man Who Fed India, a biography of Dr. Swaminathan by the Singapore-based author Priyambada Jayakumar, Mr. Gandhi said three English words known by all farmers in the country was 'Swaminathan Farmer Commission'. Mr. Gandhi said Dr. Swaminathan had been part of the group of scientists around the world who stood for humanity and nuclear disarmament. 'Swaminathan's works for agriculture has given India's farmers a life,' Mr. Gandhi said. In a panel discussion that followed the book release, Shashi Tharoor, MP, said Dr. Swaminathan worked at a time when the memories of Bengal famine were haunting the country. 'International contacts' Former Planning Board Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said Dr. Swaminathan revolutionised the country's agriculture through his international contacts. DMK leader Kanimozhi said Dr. Swaminathan's works for empowering women and ensuring ecologically friendly agriculture practices were not discussed the way it deserved.

All 48 vacant dentist posts in govt colleges to be filled immediately, says health minister Ma Subramanian
CHENNAI: Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Tuesday said all 48 vacant dentist posts in government dental colleges will be filled immediately through the Medical Services Recruitment Board (MRB). Speaking to reporters after inaugurating equipment and infrastructure upgrades at the Government Dental College in Chennai, the minister said apart from 40 dentists, recruitment of 450 technical staff has also been completed. 'The chief minister will soon hand over the appointment orders to the selected candidates,' he said. It may be recalled that last month, the Dental Council of India (DCI) issued a notice to the state health department about deficiencies in faculty attendance. On the naming of health scheme after Chief Minister MK Stalin, Subramanian said it was 'strange' that the AIADMK has filed a contempt plea. 'The previous AIADMK government ran schemes like Amma Uppu, which was sold in just 10 shops, and Amma Drinking Water, which was available only at bus stands,' he said. 'The AIADMK has filed a petition out of jealousy because the DMK has gained huge public support due to such schemes,' he stated.
