Man held with alprazolam tablets in Indore

Indore, Aug 3 (PTI) A 23-year-old man has been arrested for alleged possession of alprazolam tablets in Madhya Pradesh's Indore city, police said on Sunday.
Based on a tip-off, a police team nabbed the accused, Jitendra Maloriya, late on Saturday night, Sub-Inspector Kamal Kishore of Banganga police station told PTI.
Two strips of alprazolam with 15 tablets each were recovered from the accused, who has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said.
Alprazolam, a psychotropic substance under the NDPS Act, is used as a medicine to treat anxiety and panic disorders.
Further investigations are underway to find out where the substance was sourced from and to whom the accused intended to sell it, the official said. PTI COR LAL ARU

Bawankule faces flak for sharing stage with accused in Tuljapur drugs case
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: State revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule was embroiled in a controversy after he was felicitated by a man currently out on bail in the Tuljapur drugs case. Critics raised eyebrows, pointing out that Bawankule not only accepted the felicitations at the event on Thursday, but also praised the accused and even put his hand on his shoulder, suggesting a close relationship between the two. Vinod alias Pintu Gangane, the husband of Tuljapur municipal council's former president, got bail in the case a month ago from the Bombay HC bench in Aurangabad. Ambadas Danve, leader of opposition in the legislative council, said the Tuljapur drugs case has been making headlines and probe is still on. "A man who indulged in illicit businesses welcomed and felicitated Bawankule, who is not only the state's revenue minister but also a BJP leader. Bawankule then respectfully brought such a person close. It looks like the minister almost hugged him," he said. BJP workers said the event was organised to mark the approval of the Tuljapur development plan. A BJP office bearer from Sambhajinagar said, "Vinod Gangane has just been named an accused and that too for consumption. He has not been convicted. There is no point in making so much noise about it." State food and civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal also defended Bawankule. "Senior political functionaries are not aware of all those who are on stage when they go for a public programme. It often happens that citizens want to meet politicians and get photographed. At such times, if the politician stops anyone from sharing the dais, and if that person happens to be a good functionary, it creates problems for the party in electoral politics," Bhujbal said. "The onus is on local party units, who should ensure that people with controversial backgrounds are not allowed on stage," he added. Gangane's name featured as an organiser on the programme's invitation card. Political sources said he shares close ties with local MLA Rana Patil. The Tuljapur drug trafficking case came to light on Feb 14 after the arrest of three people from Tamalwadi village with 45 grams of MD. Police seized synthetic drugs worth Rs 2.5 lakh on Feb 15, uncovering a network spanning Solapur, Naldurg, Pune and Mumbai. A priest from Tuljabhavani temple was among the main peddlers. After the HC rejected his interim bail, Gangane was arrested on June 7 based on the Tamalwadi police's FIR for possession and consumption of MD drugs under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The HC granted him conditional bail on July 10. At the time of seeking bail, his lawyer had argued that Gangane was a consumer and not a drug peddler, and even in the charge sheet, only section 27 of the NDPS Act, which attracts a year's punishment, was invoked against him. Teacher arrested under Pocso Act for harassing Class I student in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: A schoolteacher was arrested by the city police under the Pocso Act on Thursday, for harassing a Class I student at a private school in the city. The arrested has been identified as Sivakumar, 36, of Seeranaickenpalayam in the city. He was working at a private school in Bommayapalayam near Vadavalli. Police said investigation revealed that Sivakumar was in the habit of misbehaving with boy students during class hours. A Class I student who was affected, informed his parents about the incident, following which they filed a complaint with the district children welfare committee on Wednesday. The boy's parents also and lodged a police complaint. Sivakumar was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and subsequently arrested. UP: Parents assault daughter over desire to study, face legal heat
Etah (UP), Aug 8 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district has lodged a complaint against her parents for allegedly assaulting her when she expressed her desire to continue her studies, police said on Friday. The parents — Digambar Singh and his wife Lata Devi — are now facing legal action under the Juvenile Justice Act's Section 75 (punishment for cruelty to child), they said. According to the police, the incident took place on July 25, and was reported to the Jalesar police station in Etah district on August 5. Citing a complaint filed by Bhavna Singh, a student of Class 10 at Siddhartha Inter College in Jalesar, the police said, on July 25, the girl had asked her parents to register in the school so that she could appear in the examination. Her parents declined her request saying that they do not have the money to educate her. When she insisted on educating herself and her younger brother Ramraj, she was beaten up by her father at the home and later on Agra-Jalesar Road during a journey, the police said. They added that when a passerby, Ankit Pradhan, saw Digambar assaulting the girl, he came to her rescue. Ankit Pradhan took Bhavna, her brother and their mother to a police check post in Jalesar. From there, suddenly Lata Devi disappeared along with her son, and did not return to the police post even after a long-time, the police said. The 14-year-old girl also mentioned in her complaint that her father had dialled 112 and gave false information that Ankit Pradhan had kidnapped his wife, they said. 'The fact is that I myself want to study, and also want to make my younger brother educated," the 14-year-old girl said. 'It is my humble request to the Justice Board that proper arrangements be made for my education and that of my brother. And take appropriate legal action against my father Digambar Singh, who beat me and threw me out of the house and my mother Lata who left me alone," she said in her complaint. A case was registered in Jalesar and the matter has been presented in the Juvenile Justice Protection Board. Despite being summoned several times, the parents did not appear in court. Finally, the court has appointed police station in-charge Sudhir Kumar as the guardian of the girl, they said. Jalesar SHO Sudhir Kumar said that the girl's father is a peon at Siya Devi Degree College and a habitual drinker and quarrelsome person by nature. There has been a dispute between the husband and wife for a long time and at present both live separately. Some time ago, the wife had also filed a case of attempt to murder against the husband. The SHO has taken the responsibility of the girl and has gotten her registered at a school so she can continue her studies and also provided books, uniform and Rs 2,000 cash for any other expenses. SHO Kumar said after a month, when the girl returns from Noida, then efforts will be made to get her enrolled in a good residential school like Kasturba Gandhi or Sainik Vidyalaya so that she can continue her studies even without her parents.
