'Fix Accountability': M Kharge's Volley Against Centre In Op Sindoor Debate
Launching a volley of attacks on the Centre during the debate on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday said "factories of lies" have been set up and demanded that accountability be fixed for repeated intelligence failures.
Extending his condolences to the families of those killed in the Pahalgam attack on April 22, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said members of the treasury benches, in their speeches, have tried to deflect attention from the issues at hand.
"Our history is a long one. The history of the Congress is a long one. Our contribution to nation-building has been immense. There is not one Public Sector Unit that you have set up. You have only set up factories of lies. Then you talk about HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) and other PSUs that we have created," Mr Kharge said in Hindi.
The Congress President said Amit Shah visited Jammu and Kashmir on April 7 and 8 and said that the terrorist ecosystem had been crippled under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
"If it was crippled, how was the Pahalgam attack carried out? You keep saying so many things that are so far from the truth. Just three days before the attack, PM Modi cancelled his scheduled visit to J&K... This is an issue I have raised before as well and I have got no answers. Did the Centre suspect that an attack was about to be carried out? If so, why were the tourists and pilgrims not stopped from going?" Mr Kharge asked.
At this point, BJP President and leader of the House JP Nadda intervened and called for some remarks to be expunged.
'Arrogance'
Continuing his attack, the Congress president said he and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, wrote letters demanding a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, but got no response.
"Our letters seem to end up in the waste bin. They don't even look at them. This much arrogance is not good. You don't have time to write a couple of sentences and reply? During the 1962 India-China War, then PM Jawaharlal Nehru had agreed to a special session and said nothing should be hidden from the people. We also asked for the truth to be told in all-party meetings at least. We attended those meetings, where was PM Modi? Why was he not there?" he questioned.
'Who Is Responsible?'
Pointing to the 2016 Uri and Pathankot terrorist attacks, the Pulwama attack in 2019 and Pahalgam this year, Mr Kharge alleged that the government has to admit there have been repeated intelligence failures.
"I want to ask the Home Minister, who is responsible for this? If he is responsible, accountability should be fixed... There have been five attacks in Pahalgam alone since the BJP government came to power. Mistakes may have happened, but what did you do to fix them? If the Home Minister is responsible, he should resign. If he is not, the Prime Minister should decide what action needs to be taken," the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha said.
"Even the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said there was a security lapse in the Pahalgam terror attack," Mr Kharge said and, when someone from the treasury benches began shouting, added, "You keep talking about what we have done. Under Indira Gandhi, we split Pakistan into two and ensured Bangladesh got Independence," he added.
The Congress President said Home Minister Shah has said three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack have been killed. "But what about the others? Where are they hiding? Why haven't you been able to find them?" he asked.
Stating that the Opposition had extended all possible support to the government in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, Mr Kharge said that did not stop the Centre from attacking the Congress and other parties for electoral gains.
The Congress president also said at least 27 people, including five children, were killed in Pakistani firing during Operation Sindoor and asked why they were not moved to safer places.

A few days back, Lieutenant Governor of J&K (Manoj Sinha) accepted that there was both intelligence and security failure in Pahalgam. If there is intelligence and security failure, then somebody is guilty for that. On the one hand, we have taken the action that was to be taken against terrorists. The three terrorists who are responsible for the Pahalgam incident have been eliminated. But, so far, there is no action taken for the intelligence and security failure there. People would like to hear about that.' In reply to another question on elimination of two more terrorists in J&K on Wednesday, the J&K CM said, 'This will go on. But you have to ask those who told you in 2019 that after abrogation of (Article) 370, terrorism will end in J&K. Today, almost six years have passed since (Article) 370 was abrogated. Even today, terrorists are being eliminated. So, there is a difference between the time when it was said then and current reality.' After his arrival, Abdullah also paid a courtesy visit to Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel. During his stay in Gujarat, as per an official release from Gujarat government, Abdullah is also scheduled to visit the Statue of Unity.

In a first, UNSC sanctions team names TRF in report
The Resistance Front (TRF) twice claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terrorist attack before retracting, said the Monitoring Team (MT) of the UN Security Council (UNSC) Sanctions Committee in its latest report mentioning for the first time the name of the Pakistan-based terror group that was listed as a foreign terrorist organization by the US earlier this month. Indian officials described the development as a diplomatic victory saying this was the first time the group, a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) proxy, had been named in any UN document. Participating in the Operation Sindoor debate in Rajya Sabha, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said that Indian diplomacy had been successful in getting the UNSC monitoring team to accept that 'TRF today is a terrorist entity'. There was no mention of the 2019 Pulwama attack in the same report that appeared in July that year. India has been working with the monitoring team since December 2023 for a UN ban on the TRF, providing inputs about TRF-LeT links, but these efforts are unlikely to bear fruit at least till the end of Pakistan's non-permanent membership of the Security Council. 'Another member state said attack was carried out by TRF, which is synonymous with LeT. And it mentions that Pakistan actually opposed it and said LeT was defunct. So, we were able to get into UN a recognition that TRF today is a proxy for the LeT and is responsible for Pahalgam,' said Jaishankar. According to Indian government sources, this development is significant as all decisions of the 1267 Sanctions Committee, including MT reports, are adopted by consensus by UNSC members. The official said that in 2024, on 2 occasions, the MEA had provided inputs to the MT on the activities of the TRF and its linkages to the LeT. 'An MEA-led inter-ministerial delegation briefed the MT and other senior UN officials in New York in May 2024 and also shared a dossier on TRF,' he said, adding that the development also reflects close cooperation between India and like-minded countries in the Security Council.

SGPC president welcomes Rajasthan move to allow Sikhs to sit for entrance exams with ‘kada', ‘kirpan'
Amritsar: Responding to Rajasthan govt's recent decision to allow Sikh candidates to appear in competitive examinations while wearing their articles of faith, including the 'kada' and 'kirpan', Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Wednesday said the step had been long overdue. The decision followed widespread outrage within the Sikh community after a Gursikh girl, Gurpreet Kaur from Tarn Taran district, was denied entry to a competitive examination for the recruitment of civil judge of Rajasthan high court (Jodhpur) for wearing a kada. Dhami appealed to the chief minister of Rajasthan to make special arrangements for the affected Sikh candidate to be allowed to retake the exam, which she missed due to the misconduct of certain officials. This, he said, would ensure justice is delivered. Dhami also appealed to the Centre to instruct all state govts to uphold the constitutional rights of Sikhs and to take strict measures to prevent such discriminatory practices. He called for clear guidelines to be issued to examination authorities to ensure Sikh candidates are not harassed for wearing their articles of faith during exams. He demanded stern action against officials who violate constitutional provisions and harass Sikh students, so that such incidents do not recur.
