ECB Holds Rates Steady amid Trade Tariff Uncertainty

Taarek Refaat
The European Central Bank (ECB) left interest rates unchanged on Thursday for the first time in more than a year, as inflation settled at 2% and policymakers awaited clarity on ongoing trade tariff negotiations with the United States.
The ECB maintained its deposit rate at 2%, in line with the expectations of a vast majority of economists surveyed by Bloomberg. With uncertainty surrounding potential tariff levels, the bank offered no guidance on the direction of future policy moves.
'Inflation is now at the medium-term target of 2%,' the ECB said in its official statement. 'The economy has shown resilience in a challenging global environment. However, the outlook remains highly uncertain, particularly due to ongoing trade disputes.'
The central question now is whether the ECB will resume its rate-cutting cycle, which has seen eight reductions since June 2024, or if the monetary easing campaign has reached its conclusion.
ECB President Christine Lagarde noted that the central bank is well-positioned to address not just trade tensions but also other structural challenges, including a stronger euro and anticipated increases in public infrastructure and defense spending.
Markets remain confident that at least one more rate cut is likely by year-end. Analysts surveyed ahead of Thursday's decision anticipate a final 25-basis-point cut in September.
Following the announcement, bond markets held steady, with Germany's 10-year yield rising by 3 basis points to 2.67%. The euro remained relatively stable, slipping just 0.1% to $1.1755.
Lagarde is expected to give an update on the economic outlook for the 20-member eurozone during a press conference in Frankfurt at 2:45 p.m. CET. In its previous meeting in June, the ECB warned that aggressive U.S. tariffs could significantly slow eurozone growth and drag inflation below target.
The ECB meeting comes just a week ahead of a deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump for the European Union to finalize a trade agreement. While the EU has prepared a package of retaliatory tariffs that could have broad economic consequences, sources close to the talks remain cautiously optimistic about reaching a deal.
Diplomatic insiders say the two sides are narrowing the gap, with a proposed tariff range around 15% still under negotiation.

Egypt, Turkey Eye $15 Billion in Annual Trade as Ties Strengthen

Taarek Refaat Egypt and Turkey are setting their sights on raising bilateral trade to $15 billion annually, as both nations deepen cooperation across key economic sectors. The announcement came during talks in the Mediterranean city of El Alamein, where Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Ati met his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan. The two ministers first held a private meeting, followed by expanded discussions with their respective delegations. According to Egypt's foreign ministry, Cairo is seeking to attract more Turkish direct investment and expand collaboration in manufacturing, energy, transport, tourism, and other strategic industries. Abdel Ati stressed the importance of continuing to implement the outcomes of the inaugural High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting, held in Istanbul in September 2024 under the leadership of both presidents. 'The goal is to build on the agreements already reached in economic, investment, and sectoral cooperation to launch a new phase of partnership between our two countries,' Abdel Ati said. The Egyptian minister also expressed appreciation for Ankara's official endorsement of Egypt's candidate for UNESCO's Director-General post, former Minister of Antiquities Khaled El-Enany. On his part, Turkey's top diplomat described the bilateral relationship as 'making progress on all fronts,' reiterating the joint ambition to reach the $15 billion trade target. The ministers highlighted the symbolic significance of 2025, marking the centennial of formal diplomatic relations between Egypt and Turkey, a milestone both sides say they want to commemorate with concrete economic achievements. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Trump Fires IRS Commissioner "Billy Long", Appoints Bessent as Acting Chief

Taarek Refaat U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed Billy Long from his position as Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and appointed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to serve as acting commissioner, White House and administration sources confirmed on Friday. The New York Times, which first reported the move, said Long, a former congressman from Missouri, is expected to be nominated for an ambassadorial post, though the target country has not been disclosed. 'Secretary Bessent will now serve as Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service,' a White House official said. A Treasury Department spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. Long, who was sworn in as the 51st IRS commissioner in June 2025, had been expected to serve a term lasting until November 2027. His sudden departure comes less than two months into the role. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
