AEW Dynamite results and highlights (Feb. 12): MJF delivers vs. Dustin Rhodes, ignites Hangman Page feud

Yahoo13-02-2025
Wednesday's edition of "AEW Dynamite" before Saturday's Grand Slam event was on another level. Australia is going to get a serious treat this weekend.
Two major storylines ran throughout the night, but one in particular stole the show.
I've recently been asking for two things regarding MJF, specifically. The first was for him to wrestle more, and the second was for him to do something meaningful.
Thankfully, those requests were answered on this "AEW Dynamite" in an overall story arc that was given an appropriate large portion of the show's time.
Max Caster opened the night to troll his way into the ring and make an open challenge. Caster is good as a heel, but this "best wrestler alive" troll gimmick is lame and not what he was best at when he got over with Anthony Bowens and Billy Gunn. To continue last week's antics, Hangman Adam Page entered the ring and effectively put on a comedy squash match.
I will say, the initial hiding in the crowd from Caster was hilarious.

After the match, Renee Paquette interviewed MJF briefly before Hangman interrupted to try and steal it. None too pleased, MJF cut the cowboy deep with an excellent promo that left him speechless. MJF was rightfully sick of all the disrespect and odd interruptions he'd received from his fellow former champion in recent weeks.
With the drama building between these two, a slow burn felt on tap for their collision. I'm sure that would have worked and been great. But boy, we aren't waiting around now.

MJF will remind you every time he's in the ring just how damn good he is as a performer. The time between his matches often can make you forget, but that might be why we should appreciate them even more. By that same token, it's beyond me how Dustin Rhodes can still go to the level he does after a lifetime of wrestling.
These two unsurprisingly meshed greatly between the ropes, and MJF gave us some fun Goldust callbacks and classic cartoonish — but not unrealistic — selling. The story within the match was essentially MJF trying to hurt Rhodes with his own moves while targeting an arm.
A couple spots actually sold me a ticket for a minute. MJF's drop from the title scene gave a sense that a loss may have been possible. First, there was his attempt at the Cross Rhodes before Rhodes countered with one of his own. Then we got a piledriver from MJF, which was a pretty funny coincidence to see Rhodes kick out of after his brother, Cody Rhodes', feud with Kevin Owens.
The big one, however, was a Shattered Dreams to Final Reckoning from Rhodes that MJF kicked out of at 2.5. That felt like it was it.

A nice little touch to that whole sequence was the referee Bryce Remsburg removing a chair from Rhodes' arm when MJF threatened to break it from the top rope. I mean, yeah. That's what a realistic and competent official would do. Therefore, opening the window for Rhodes' blatantly illegal old finisher.
Ultimately, MJF stole Rhodes' Final Reckoning after the kickout and won via submission from an armbar to crossface transition. This was just good — mostly clean — grasp.
Then it happened. Hangman emerged afterward to give us one hell of a brawl through the arena. MJF tried to literally kill the guy by throwing him over the entryway rail. This was brilliant and given the proper time to feel significant.

This feud feels like exactly what both needed. Something intense to keep them both strong outside the title picture, which in turn will help them get back into it. The brief promo work so far has been excellent, will only get better, and the match will be a certified banger. I can't wait. This is how you do it.
Right when you thought it was over after roughly three minutes of shenanigans, MJF enticed it to continue. They'll meet next week "face-to-face" on "AEW Dynamite."
I always forget this company has trios titles. That's because there are too many titles. The Freebird rule was one of the best things WWE used through its abysmal rough path in the 2010s, specifically to help The New Day.
If you're unfamiliar with that rule, it states that when a group of three holds the tag team titles, they're all considered the champions. They just have to decide which two members they'll have competed in their matches. Obviously, it's a kayfabe rule. That doesn't make it any less usable across professional wrestling.
I don't know why WWE didn't take that as far as they could have during that time, utilizing more trios than just The New Day in the tag title scene. AEW should do that. Remove the trios titles, but keep trios, and have them all in one super-stacked tag team division. With all that said, the Undisputed Kingdom and the Death Riders delivered a solid title match.

There wouldn't have been any problems with the Undisputed Kingdom winning the match, and they probably should have to start the Death Riders' spiral. They could sure use the titles, too. It was a slow burn but picked up nicely with a relatively wild ending.
Pac, Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta nearly lost their titles. Hanging on to get the win, the stable celebrated with a patented beatdown, of course. Meanwhile, their feared AEW World champion leader Jon Moxley had his title briefcase stolen by Cope and Jay White backstage.
Cope and White later told Moxley to meet them in the ring at the end of the night if he wanted his title back. Inanimate object hostage situations are always fun, aren't they?
When we reached that point in the night, we didn't get our beloved attempted murder of the night. Instead, a murderous threat! Moxley finally agreed to Cope's Revolution title challenge and promised to break his neck. Then Cope smashed the briefcase with his spiked bat and brawl, brawl, brawl. Had all the previous happenings occurred, I would have considered this the same old run-of-the-mill segment we've seen lately. This was good, though. We had some new wrinkles, and it required spacing out.
Moxley accepted, but Cope is going to open up the case anyway!Watch #AEWDynamite on @TBSNetwork & @SportsOnMax@RatedRCope | @JayWhiteNZ | @JonMoxley | @MarinaShafir | @ClaudioCSRO | @WheelerYuta | @BASTARDPAC pic.twitter.com/SbYuPmLVi7

I love Cope despite absolutely despising him at his peak as a manipulative heel during my childhood. That's how good the dude can be. And as much as I want to see Moxley drop the title, or abandon this gimmick, Cope doesn't feel like the right guy for the job. I could even see White betraying him because that's right in line with his character, as he wants to be champ, too. Hell, it would kind of be reminiscent of classic Edge, wouldn't it?

If we say it enough times, it will happen, right?
You can't convince me this wouldn't be a great idea. Yes, Mercedes Mone is a great champion and objectively one of the best on Earth. But Cameron can do no wrong right now — whether that's in English or Chinese! The woman is an absolute star, and the Grand Slam roof would blow off that building if she got the job done.

I know this is super optimistic, but Cameron doesn't know how not to captivate. She is the everything Swiss-Aussie Army knife of women's wrestling entertainment.
Hurt Syndicate successfully defended their AEW World Tag Team titles against The Gunns in a fun main event match. Austin Gunn took the brunt of the first-half beating before Colten Gunn led a late rally, but they couldn't overcome the ultra-talented pairing of Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin.
This was always what should have happened. What I didn't expect, however, was Lance Archer and Brian Cage coming out afterward to applaud them.
I have seen the vision, you guys. Cage and Archer are part of the Don Callis Family. You know who is currently feuding with them? Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega. It's happening. I'm willing this into existence.

1. Samoa Joe, Hook and Katsuyori Shibata abused some poor jobbers. Sure, that's cool. I like it when any of those three do that. So, all together? Why Not?
Joe challenged The Patriarchy to a match in a classic Joe promo afterward.
2. Megan Bayne also had a squash match. This honestly felt unnecessary after she beat Thunder Rosa, but Bayne is awesome and has an incredible presence. The big win here was her teasing a Kris Statlander program, as the latter made her entrance right after.

3. The Bayne win led right into Statland vs. Penelope Ford. This should be another separate entry because AEW's structure of this show with these flowing portions was beautiful.
Stat and Ford put on a great match, like always, with Stat winning. Bayne then came back out after a Ford attack gave her the opening for an F-5 on Stat outside the ring. Seeing these two work together is going to be fantastic.

4. AEW Women's World Champion Mariah May delivered a vintage backstage promo on Toni Storm towards the end of the show. The champ is getting more and more worked up about Storm's existence, almost convincing her of certain truths — or lack thereof. Whether or not their story continues after Grand Slam, it's going to be one hell of a conclusion.
1. Poor Willow Nightingale was attacked by Marina Shafir mid-interview. What did she ever do to you, Marina?! How rude.
This episode's Uncrowned gem is a gem of all gems, and I'm not sure I noticed it as much as in previous weeks, but Renee Paquette really is a key piece to every "AEW Dynamite." She interviewed practically everyone and receives way more airtime than we might realize. And rightfully so because she's perfect in her role and adds so many little subtleties just with her expressions, no matter the scenario she's around.
The camera loves Miss Paquette, and so do we.

US Open mixed doubles live updates: Schedule, bracket, how to watch today

The US Open will crown its first champions of the Grand Slam tennis tournament on Wednesday, Aug. 20. The semifinals and finals of the reimagined mixed doubles competition will be held under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium, giving the fans in New York their first taste of prime time tennis this year. Mixed doubles began Tuesday, Aug. 19 with a full day of first-round and quarterfinal matches, and the compact event concludes quickly, giving players plenty of time to prepare for singles play, which begins on Sunday, Aug. 24. Because mixed doubles was moved nearly a full week before singles action gets underway at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the event was able to attract many of the sport's top stars, including a number of Americans. The mixed doubles semifinals feature one of the top American players in Jessica Pegula, who reached the US Open singles final last year. Pegula is teaming up with Great Britain's Jack Draper, the No. 5-ranked player in the world on the ATP Tour, and the pair earned the No. 1 seed in the mixed doubles competition. Five-time Grand Slam singles champion Iga Swiatek, who took the women's singles crown at the US Open in 2022, will also be in action with partner Casper Ruud. The No. 3-seeded team faces Pegula and Draper in one semifinal. The other semifinal features an all-American pair against an Italian duo, with Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison of the U.S. taking on Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. The semifinal winners will then face off later Wednesday night for the championship. USA TODAY Sports will have full coverage of the 2025 US Open mixed doubles semifinals and final. Here is everything you need to know before the action starts. US Open mixed doubles order of play today All times Eastern. All matches are held at Arthur Ashe Stadium and televised on ESPN2. If each team has won four games in a set, a tiebreak will be played. If the teams split sets, a 10-point match tiebreak will be played in lieu of a third set. The first team to win 10 points, with an advantage of two or more points, will win the match. In the final, the first team to win six games wins the set, and the first team to win two sets wins the championship. Coco Gauff Continues 'Strange' Season By Firing Two Coaches

Coco Gauff Continues 'Strange' Season By Firing Two Coaches originally appeared on The Spun. With the 2025 US Open less than a week away, Coco Gauff has made a few adjustments to her coaching staff. Gauff, the WTA World No. 3, has struggled since winning the French Open on June 7. She was upset by Dayana Yastremska in the opening round at Wimbledon, suffered an upset loss to Victoria Mboko at the National Bank Open, and lost to Jasmine Paolini at the Cincinnati Masters in a three-set thriller. A big issue for Gauff over the past few months has been her serve. She had 16 double faults against Paolini last Friday. Her serve let her down at Wimbledon as well. The two-time Grand Slam champion had nine double faults in her straight-sets loss to Yastremska. In an effort to improve her serve, Gauff has parted ways with Matt Daly and J.C. Faurel. According to multiple reports, she's adding biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan. It's not often that you'll see a player fire two coaches a couple of months after winning a Grand Slam title. However, Gauff is clearly scrambling for answers before the final major tournament of the year. Gauff's fans approve of this move. "Good!! Something had to be done!! I remember Sabalenka having trouble with her serve. It took her a bit though, hopefully it helps Coco get back on track," one fan commented. "Didn't expect this but might be for the best," a second fan said. "So happy to see Coco making these good tactical changes. She is so hard to beat when her serve is working! Looking forward to the progress," a third fan wrote. "She just won Roland Garros this year?? Strange," a social media user said. Will this change lead to another US Open title for Gauff? It might be too early for Gauff to win a title with her revamped coaching staff, but we can't rule out a deep run at the US Open. For starters, Gauff won the US Open just two years ago. She knows how to play in front of the bright lights in New York. We also can't forget that her form wasn't completely broken. It was just her serve that needed improvement. If Gauff can build off her success at the Cincinnati Masters while cutting down on her double faults, she could be a serious threat in Queens. The main draw for the US Open will begin on Sunday, Aug. 24. Coco Gauff Continues 'Strange' Season By Firing Two Coaches first appeared on The Spun on Aug 20, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 20, 2025, where it first appeared.

WWE getting early ESPN start with John Cena-led Wrestlepalooza — going head-to-head with AEW

WWE's first premium live event of the ESPN era is coming early and going head-to-head with its biggest competition. WWE announced the first-ever Wrestlepalooza will air Saturday, Sept. 20, from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, live on ESPN's new direct-to-consumer streaming service beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The event will run directly against All Elite Wrestling's All Out pay-per-view from Toronto's ScotiaBank Arena starting at 6 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime, regularly for $49.99 per show. WWE announced a five-year, $1.6 billion deal with ESPN earlier this month for the right to stream its premium live events, which was supposed to begin in 2026. Now it appears WWE's PLE deal with Peacock ends after Clash in Paris on Aug. 31. ESPN's new service, which launches on Aug. 21, will carry all WWE PLEs moving forward. Customers with the service's unlimited plan, which costs $29.99 per month, will be able to stream the WWE PLEs. There is also a Select Plan for $11.99 per month. 3 John Cena was announced for WWE's Wrestlepalooza show on Sept. 20. Getty Images Currently, those who have ESPN via DirecTV, Charter Communications, Hulu + LiveTV, FuboTV and Verizon Fios will have access to the WWE PLEs at no additional charge, according to an ESPN spokesperson. Wrestlepalooza, which is the name of a former ECW event, marks the first time WWE will run a main roster PLE directly up against an AEW pay-per-view. All Out is one of the company's four original PPVs. 3 ESPN's DTC streaming service launches Aug. 21. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Con WWE announced that John Cena will make a stop on his retirement tour at Wrestlepalooza, with the rumor being that it will be where he will clash with Brock Lesnar. WWE champion Cody Rhodes, current rival Drew McIntyre, World Heavyweight champion Seth Rollins, CM Punk and Women's Intercontinental champion Becky Lynch were also announced for the show. 3 AEW and its world champion 'Hangman' Adam Page will also be running All Out on Sept. 20. Lee South/WWE WWE continued its attempts to counterprogram AEW by running NXT's Great American Bash show and a 'Saturday Night's Main Event' headlined by Goldberg's retirement match against Gunther, up against AEW's biggest show of the year, All In, in July. The move saw AEW president Tony Khan turn All In into the longest televised pro wrestling show in U.S. history at eight hours, including the preshow, to counterprogram WWE's counterprogramming All In still did an estimated 180,000 to 185,000, according to the Wrestling Observer.
