Beau Dazzler takes unorthodox path to Winx Guineas at Sunshine Coast
It's unconventional and quirky but Tony Sears reckons dropping his colt back 800m in distance might just be a masterstroke as he prepares to line up in Saturday's $300,000 Group 3 Winx Guineas.
It's not every day you see a horse dropping so far in distance but that's what Beau Dazzler will be doing as he aims up in the Guineas over 1600m after last being seen in the Group 1 Queensland Derby over 2400m.

Beau Dazzler is a $14 chance in the Group 3 Guineas on the Sunshine Coast with some punters not quite sure what to make of the left-field blueprint.
Beau Dazzler copped a wide run in the Derby when being beaten more than nine lengths but Sears, who co-trains with daughter Maddy, now believes the colt's sweet spot could potentially be 1800m.

Sears feels you need a horse who runs a strong 1800m to win the 1600m Guineas given the expansive nature of the big Sunshine Coast track.
'We were going to spell him after the Derby, but he hadn't had many runs this campaign,' Sears said.
'He was only third-up into the Derby and I'm not sure whether training him for a Derby really suited him.
'We decided to set him for the Winx Guineas because we figured that you needed a horse who could run 1800m to win the Guineas and he certainly is that.
'He hasn't raced for a while and he had a few days in the paddock and he's fresh and going well.
'I am now thinking he is a really good mile to 1800(m) horse.
'I know on Saturday that the distance will be no problem at all and he handles the sting out of the track.'
Regular rider Jag Guthmann-Chester will again partner Beau Dazzler who has drawn barrier nine in the Winx Guineas, the race so named because it was the start of Winx's famous 33-race winning streak in 2015.
Paul Shailer-trained Mister Bianco, who wears the same colours as Winx and is part-owned by Peter Tighe, is the $3.40 favourite for the Winx Guineas off the back of three successive wins.
But Mister Bianco has drawn wide and punters must also note he has never raced beyond 1400m before.

Meanwhile, Sears is certain his speedy sprinter Steady Ready is the one to beat as the $3.10 favourite in the $200,000 Open Plate (1000m).
Steady Ready was well beaten when resuming in the Lightning Handicap at Eagle Farm last month but Sears said there were clear excuses.
'He had a few issues when he last raced, he galloped on his heel and he was lame for a week afterwards,' Sears said.
'But we took him and trialled him at Beaudesert and I thought he went really good.
'If he is back to his best, which I think he is, he is the one they all have to beat.'

Bizarrely, in 2014, Stratton hit headlines when it was revealed that he had been under surveillance by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation while he was director of the Sydney film festival, due to a visit he made to the USSR in the late 1960s. He received numerous awards for his contributions to film criticism and the film industry, including the Order of Australia for his services to the film industry as a critic and reviewer. The Temper Trap break nine-year silence with new single ‘Lucky Dimes'

Aussie global hitmakers The Temper Trap are back together after a nine-year hiatus with a surprise new song 'Lucky Dimes.' The quartet have been riding high on social media and streaming over the past 18 months with a succession of popular remixes of their 2009 smash 'Sweet Disposition'. The love for that song continues at home with 'Sweet Disposition' landing at No. 11 on Triple J's recent Hottest 100 Australian Songs poll. They also enjoyed a viral moment when TikTok fans resurfaced a track by late rapper Mac Miller which heavily sampled the Temper Trap's hit 'Love Lost' and now has more than 400 million streams. Frontman Dougy Mandagi blamed burnout and a fear of repeating themselves for the band's long break between their 2016 album Thick as Thieves and their return to the singles game with 'Lucky Dimes'. 'There was a little bit of burnout, but for me personally, I think I just couldn't see a path forward at the time where we would do something that would sound fresh and new and exciting,' he said from his London home. 'It just seemed like if we were going to get back in the studio … that we would just come out with more of the same and I didn't want to be in the studio for another 18 months doing Sweet Disposition 2.0. 'I needed to take a break and do other things and soak in more inspiration from life, the world, and different music, and I pursued a side project, a solo project as well, which was fun to do.' Mandagi got the band back together with Jonny Aherne, Toby Dundas and Joseph Greeran two years ago and have been steadily working on new songs as well as returning to festival stages. The darker-edged 'Lucky Dimes' has a 90s electronic rock vibe similar to Garbage, who have just announced their return to Australia for the first tour in a decade with the Good Things festival. The band worked with Grammy-nominated Aussie producer Styalz Fuego whose credits include hits with Troye Sivan, Charli XCX and Khalid. 'I'm a 90s child so I was the right age to receive all that good music. So yeah, we're just tapping into stuff we like,' he said. The single is out now with The Temper Trap still confirming plans to return for an Australian tour in early 2026. HINUNE (5) has accepted for Bathurst Monday. Big chance wherever she goes. CRUSADER RAZOR (10) has drawn wide but will come in plenty with the scratchings! Beaten 3-lengths by a good horse (Bonnie And Bruce) at Bathurst last time. BET: RELEASE POINT (4) to win, CRUSADER RAZOR (10) to place, Daily Double 1st Leg 4, 2nd Leg 1. OCCULT (6) was $1.24 into $1.12 when he made his Cody Morgan stable debut here on June 27 and won accordingly. One can only assume that he was bought (off Godolphin) with the Country Championships in mind and London to a Brick-on, he'll be in the Heat if they want him to go that way. OENOLOGY (3) has a wide draw and is first-up but he's a pretty reliable horse. TOUGH GUY (5) (Bullock's ride) is on such a rapid, upward trajectory. So too NIMBLE STAR (2) who has won 3 from 4 and lost the rider at the other. BET: OCCULT (6) to win, box trifecta 2,3,5,6. SPIRIT OF PLUTO (1) has won five times with eight placings from 32 starts. He has placed twice here, twice at the distance and twice first-up. He was on a hat-trick prior to a creditable effort in the Newmarket at Armidale. gets 'in' okay now after the claim. THE AFFIRMATIVE (12) has a really compelling set of numbers right across the board apart, maybe, by her first-up stats. The Anthony Manton-owned, Craig Clegg-trained local races well here at home but was dealt the visitor's draw! Can imagine LA PELAGO (6) making full use of the inside draw. BET: SPIRIT OF PLUTO (1) each-way. â– â– â– â– â– TAREE TIPS BEST BET Race 2 No.3 LYKOS: Big run with no luck on debut at Tuncurry on the Heavy 8. NEXT BEST Race 4 No.7 SHALAMIYNA: Beat a decent Maiden field here on a Heavy 9. VALUE Race 7 No.7 THE YOUNG YEARS: Her 'best' is good enough to give some cheek in the right Highway. TAREE INSIDE MAIL BUCK PHAROAH (5) gets the conditions to suit, big time, on Friday keeping in mind that his record on the Heavy going is nine starts for four wins and three placings. Four of his six career wins are circa this short trip and he races well at Taree. Nine of ZOE SHARK (3) 's last 11 starts have been at her home track at Newcastle. She's won two of them and one of those she beat Dark Glitter no less. LADY TULESSA (6) has nine wins on her resume which is not easy too in any era let alone in the Benchmark system. BET: BUCK PHAROAH (5) to win. VEECEE (1), the $750,000 Gold Coast yearling in 2022, sold online in 2024, has got lengths on these. In fact, I would be happy to back him in most Highways BUT with that said, I am not sure about him on really wet tracks. GOT THE SMARTS (5) has accepted for Ballina on Monday but drew poorly (13) as opposed to (2) here. She is a 6YO with just nine starts under her belt but she is loaded with talent. There is a scenario where both are absent which could pave the way for the Paul Snowden-trained CASH AND CARDS (2). BET: CASH AND CARDS (2) to place. THE YOUNG YEARS (7) is one of those horses whose 'best' is good enough to win most races that she runs in, even a Highway if things really fell into her lap that is. She goes well enough at Taree, she goes particularly well on Heavy tracks and has run okay in some rather strong 58's of late. HYPOTHERMIA (6) ran way above his $41 SP when fifth, beaten a diminishing three-lengths, in a 58 at Grafton last start. Both wins were on Soft. KAYZ TIME (1) has Sammy Conquers All and Bodhi Boy form. OSTRACISED (4) is racing so well this prep. For the record, he is '822117'. That last run was in the Coffs Harbour Cup. He wasn't great by any stretch but this is more his go on Friday. Two things weigh heavily in his favour IMHO, one is back to 1412m and the other is that he is a muddie par excellence. LEASE (8) commemorated his 50th career start with a win and what a determined win it was too from a horse who has a distinct preference for wet tracks.
