Legendary film critic David Stratton has died at the age of 85.
Stratton was best known to film fans for appearing alongside Margaret Pomeranz for decades on numerous movie review shows.
The writer's family announced his death on Thursday afternoon, saying he died peacefully in hospital near his home in the Blue Mountains.
'David's passion for film, commitment to Australian cinema, and generous spirit touched countless lives,' said his family in a statement.

At the movies with David Stratton
Before he retired last year, David Stratton spent nearly six decades reviewing movies. And millions of Australians came to know and love him thanks to an on-air partnership with fellow critic Margaret Pomeranz, which turned them into household names and one of the most beloved double acts in the country.
On the show today, David joins Sarrah from his home – where he is still watching one, and often two, movies each day – to discuss his latest project, a book that chronicles three pivotal decades in Australian film; his enduring friendship with Margaret; his thoughts on some of his most infamous reviews – including an initially lukewarm reaction to comedy classic The Castle, and another that landed him in hot water with Julie Andrews - and the one film he thought was so awful he walked out of the cinema.
David Stratton's new book Australia At The Movies is available to purchase here.

'[We] invite everyone to celebrate David's remarkable life and legacy by watching their favourite movie, or David's favourite movie of all time — Singin' In the Rain.'
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is among those who have paid tribute to Stratton.
'With dry humour and sharp insight, David Stratton shared his love of film with our country,' he wrote on Twitter.
'All of us who tuned in to 'At the Movies' respected him for his deep knowledge and for the gentle and generous way he passed it on. May he rest in peace.'
Stratton, along with Pomeranz, stepped down from At the Movies in 2014, an end of an era for the beloved duo after nearly three decades.
The film critic retired in 2023 due to his declining health. Picture: Supplied.
He retired from work in December 2023 after suffering health problems, having spent a month in hospital with a spinal fracture.
'It's been a very good innings,'' he told The Australian at the time.
The beloved media personality was celebrated for his insightful critiques and deep understanding of film history, as well as his contribution to promoting Australian cinema both nationally and internationally.
He was a well respected figure within the industry, serving as a jury member at various international film festivals throughout his career.

Stratton's career in Australia began in 1963 when he first became involved in the local film industry. In 1966 he became the director of the Sydney Film Festival, and the role became the catalyst for his decision to remain Down Under for the rest of his life.
Later on in his career he shared that his decision to ditch England for Australia left him with feelings of 'guilty' as it meant he was abandoning his family's tradition of working at their grocery store which had been open since the 1820s.
Bizarrely, in 2014, Stratton hit headlines when it was revealed that he had been under surveillance by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation while he was director of the Sydney film festival, due to a visit he made to the USSR in the late 1960s.
He received numerous awards for his contributions to film criticism and the film industry, including the Order of Australia for his services to the film industry as a critic and reviewer.

Scott Wolf breaks silence on divorce from estranged wife Kelley Wolf
Don't miss out on the headlines from Hook Ups & Break Ups. Followed categories will be added to My News. Scott Wolf is accusing his estranged wife, Kelley Wolf, of conspiring to make 'disturbing, false' claims about him amid their messy divorce battle. The Party of Five star broke his silence on his split from the former Real World star, saying his ex conspired a plan to accuse him of 'psychological abuse, child abuse, child endangerment, stealing with passports.' While he previously chose to keep this 'difficult' time in his family's lives 'private,' he told People in a statement published on Saturday that he's now speaking up to protect 'the well being of (his) children.' Scott Wolf broke his silence on his contentious divorce from Kelley Wolf, accusing her of conspiring to make false allegations against him. Picture:'I am now choosing to come forward and share that she has described to me her plans to 'make claims' about me, although she also admitted, 'I do not believe they're true,' in order to gain an advantage in what she sees as a 'battle' in court, and in the court of public opinion,' Wolf said. 'In order to protect my kids, I am providing the text messages she sent to me where she describes this plan, so there are no questions about her intentions, or the malicious intent behind her false allegations made and/or planned for the future.' The outlet went on to report that Kelley, 48, alleged in the messages that she 'was advised to make claims that are possible, even though I do not believe they're true nor would I ever say them to anyone'. In a statement, the actor alleged Kelley told him her plans to 'gain an advantage in what she sees as a 'battle' in court'. 'When you accused me of all the things you put in the restraining order, you made me into a villain. The only way I can fight back is to produce claims that are either the same as yours or greater,' she continued. She also detailed that her aim was to 'create more urgency to get the kids back. Or at least get back joint custody'. Kelley ultimately shared her allegations against Wolf on a phone call with police on June 26, according to the outlet. 'Although her claims are completely baseless and incredibly dangerous, the worst part is that they are traumatic for our children,' the 57-year-old continued in his message. In text messages, Kelley alleged she 'was advised to make claims that are possible, even though I do not believe they're true'. 'I hope that anyone who might speak publicly or report on such things, will consider this before spreading any further information from a clearly unreliable and completely compromised source.' He closed, asking for 'privacy and respect for our family' and thanked 'all those who have shown their love and support'. A representative for Kelley did not immediately respond to Page Six's request for comment. As some may recall, Kelley was shockingly detained and hospitalised after police were called to the Wolf family's Park City, Utah, home in June after a reported 'family fight'. An audio recording of the 911 call showed an unidentified woman claiming she was 'terrified' and 'needed help' after getting into an altercation with her brother-in-law and 16-year-old son. Wolf with his Party of Five cast mates Neve Campbell, Matthew Fox and Lacey Chabert. At the time, someone at the scene also mentioned an alleged 'past-occurred assault' choking incident that purportedly took place at their home in March. The scene transpired shortly after Scott filed for divorce on June 10. After his filing, Kelley later made another bombshell claim on social media that she was 'held against her will' by her former friends while she was 'trying to file for divorce.' Later that month, Scott was granted sole custody of their three children — Jackson, 16, Miller, 12, and Lucy, 11 — and a temporary restraining order against his estranged wife which he later dropped after they reached a new temporary agreement detailing custody, finances and communication. Sunrise co-host Natalie Barr's insane morning routine revealed
After marking a huge milestone of 23 years on the Seven Network's Sunrise – and officially becoming Australia's longest-serving breakfast TV presenter – Natalie Barr revealed she still loves getting up to go to work, despite the 'ungodly hour'. In a new interview with the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About, the Sunrise co-host detailed her daily schedule, which is not for those who enjoy late nights and a morning sleep-in. 'I go to bed at 7:30, eight o'clock,' she told Stellar. 'I'm up at … well, this morning was 1:30. Mostly it's 2:30. My alarm is set for 2:40, but usually I beat it. 'I'm at my desk at 3:30. I'm down to make-up at 10 past four. I'm in the studio at quarter past five. It's very regimented. Listen to the full podcast interview with Natalie Barr below: 'And then I'm home midmorning. I have a nap for an hour in the middle of the day. And my afternoon is reading news, then making dinner. It's pretty all consuming.' Barr, who has two sons (Lachlan, 23, and Hunter, 19) with film editor and husband Andrew Thompson – with whom she will celebrate 30 years of marriage in December – said the packed schedule was easier to manage now that her children are grown. 'This job is your life. It's so much easier now that I don't have little kids,' she admitted. 'If you're a working mum, particularly, that's really, really hard. Particularly if you're a single mum or a single parent, that is very, very hard. 'So I couldn't say that it was that hard. But now I feel like I can't see past what I'm doing now. I'm sort of just trying to live in the moment.' Listen to the full podcast interview with Natalie Barr below: The 57-year-old said things she still catches up with former co-host David Koch, who stood down in 2023. Matt Shirvington then joined the Sunrise team to host alongside Barr. 'We catch up for lunch sometimes and I congratulate him on things he's done,' she said of Koch. 'We text each other and see what the kids and grandkids are doing. I think when you work with someone for a long time – I talk to Mel [Melissa Doyle] as well – I think you always do that sort of thing when you've worked with someone for that long. You just keep in touch. It's nice.' And once again, Barr firmly put to rest any bad blood between her and former Sunrise co-host Samantha Armytage. 'I missed her at the Logies because I saw shots of her and I didn't run into her. She was at one of the tables just in front of us. So I meant to catch up with her, but I missed her,' she told Stellar. 'I think there's this whole sort of philosophy that everyone is sort of somehow enemies in the media. We're actually not, surprisingly.'
