Kenya midfielder Alpha Chris Onyango says the upcoming TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 is more than just a tournament — it's a golden opportunity to elevate the country's football on the continental and global stage.
With Kenya co-hosting the event alongside Uganda and Tanzania, Onyango believes the Harambee Stars have a rare chance to showcase their local talent and inspire national pride.
Speaking exclusively CAFOnline.com, the Gor Mahia midfielder reflects on his journey, ambitions, and what CHAN 2024 means for the team and for him personally. Full Q&A with Alpha Chris Onyango
How does it feel to represent Kenya on home soil in such a major tournament like CHAN?
It means everything to us as local players to play in a major continental championship. This is a chance to represent Kenya on a big stage against some of Africa's best. It's a proud moment.
What has the atmosphere in camp been like ahead of this historic tournament?
The mood has been very positive. Everyone is working hard to earn selection. There's a real sense of excitement. Hosting CHAN for the first time makes it even more special.
You'll be facing some of Africa's biggest football nations. Which fixture excites or worries you the most?
We're in a tough group with big teams like Morocco, DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia. All three fixtures are exciting. I can't single one out — they're all huge games, and we're motivated for each one.
As a local-based player, what does CHAN mean to you personally and professionally?
It's a massive platform. Personally, it's a chance to showcase my talent. Professionally, it's a step toward reaching the next level of my career. It's an opportunity to be seen across Africa and beyond.
What's your message to Kenyan fans ahead of kick-off in August?
We urge all our fans to come in large numbers and support us. We'll be playing at Kasarani Stadium, and having the stands full would give us a big boost. Their belief in us will drive us forward.
Which teammate do you think will be a surprise package at CHAN?
Honestly, our squad is full of exciting young players. It's tough to pick just one. I believe fans will be impressed by the whole team.
Has hosting the tournament added pressure or motivation for you and your teammates?
Yes, there's pressure, but we view it as positive motivation. Playing at home comes with expectations, but we're embracing it and using it to push ourselves harder.
Tell us about your journey from the domestic league to becoming a key figure in the national team.
It's been a tough but rewarding journey. I started at Gor Mahia Youth after high school and worked my way up. The past two seasons have been amazing, and I've been guided by senior players like Odada, Olunga, and Akumu. I'm still growing and learning every day.
What will it take for Kenya to go far in this tournament?
We need to follow the coach's instructions, stay focused, and give 100% in every game. We have a strong squad and a coach who believes in us. If we stay united, we can be a real threat.
If you could dedicate a CHAN victory to someone, who would it be and why?
Definitely my family. They've supported me through everything and are the reason I've reached this point in my career.

Kenya hands over Nyayo Stadium to CHAN LOC as tournament nears

Published: Friday, 18 July 2025 With just over two weeks to go before the start of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, Kenya's Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports has officially handed over the Nyayo National Stadium to the tournament's Local Organising Committee (LOC). The stadium, situated in the capital Nairobi, is one of the primary venues for the continental showpiece and will host six key fixtures—including selected Group A matches and the decisive Group C clash between Algeria and Nigeria. The handover marks a major milestone in Kenya's preparations as co-host, alongside Tanzania and Uganda, for the 2–30 August competition dedicated exclusively to home-based players. Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Mr Salim Mvurya, confirmed that the upgrades to the stadium have met all the requirements set out by CAF following a series of rigorous inspections. 'We have ensured that everything is in place and now the facility is ready to be handed over to the LOC,' Mvurya stated. 'This is done, and the next focus now is to get Kenyans to rally behind the Harambee Stars and demonstrate our passion, commitment and patriotism as a nation. "We expect to have lots of visitors as well coming in and this will be a good tourism boost for our country.' The extensive renovations at Nyayo and the nearby Kasarani Stadium were supervised by the Kenya Defense Forces to guarantee international standards. Speaking at the handover, Cabinet Secretary for Defense, Ms Soipan Tuya, lauded the effort. 'The Ministry of Defense is very proud that we have successfully overseen the world-class renovation of these two stadia. We have built facilities to the standards required,' she said. In addition to the match venues, the Ministry also officially handed over two training grounds—Ulinzi Sports Complex and Police Sacco Stadium—which will serve as vital preparation bases for participating teams. As Kenya inches closer to hosting its first-ever CHAN, the completed infrastructure is a clear signal of the country's readiness to deliver a successful and memorable tournament.

CHAN 2024: Uganda's volunteer force gears up to deliver memorable tournament

Published: Friday, 18 July 2025 Uganda is stepping up its preparations for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 by finalising a dedicated team of volunteers set to play a pivotal role in the East African nation's co-hosting duties. With just weeks to go until the continental tournament kicks off on 2 August 2025, Uganda's Local Organising Committee (LOC) has completed the initial phase of its volunteer recruitment drive, drawing a remarkable 1,884 applicants during the application window held from 14 to 22 June. The overwhelming response reflects the growing public excitement ahead of the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Following strict eligibility checks—particularly the age requirement of 18 and above—1,222 applicants have advanced to the next stage of the programme. These selected volunteers will undergo comprehensive training beginning 25 July, led by experts from the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF). The training will cover venue-specific protocols, operational standards, and service excellence to ensure that volunteers are fully prepared to contribute to the success of Africa's premier home-based player competition. Mr. Justus Mugisha, Chairman of the Workforce and Volunteers Committee, expressed his delight at the level of enthusiasm shown by Ugandans during the application process. 'The ambiance around this exercise has created a lot of excitement from the public, and the enormous numbers received indicate what kind of memories will be created at the end of the tournament,' he said. The selected volunteers will be stationed across Uganda's designated venues and will assist with logistics, hospitality, protocol, media operations, and fan services. Organisers believe the volunteers' energy and commitment will be instrumental in delivering a world-class experience to players, officials, and visiting fans. As CHAN 2024 draws near, the spirit of unity and participation continues to grow across the host nations. Uganda's volunteer programme stands as a testament to the country's readiness to welcome Africa and deliver a tournament to remember.

Nigeria's home-based stars declare readiness for CHAN battle

Published: Friday, 18 July 2025 Nigeria's home-based players have expressed confidence and determination as they continue preparations for the upcoming 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), which kicks off on 2 August across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Head coach Eric Chelle's squad is currently in camp in Ikenne, with 28 players vying for a spot in the final list. The Home Eagles will begin their Group D campaign against reigning champions Senegal on Tuesday, 7 August at the Amman Stadium in Zanzibar. They will also face Sudan and Congo in a challenging pool. Among those eyeing a place in the squad is Rangers forward Godwin Obaje, who says the team has bonded well during the training camp and are focused on the task ahead. 'All of us are like brothers, we know ourselves from the different clubs. It's normal, meeting ourselves here,' Obaje told Super Eagles Media. 'I'm looking forward to the tournament. I'm prepared, and we need to give our best. You know Nigeria is one of the best countries in Africa. We are preparing very well.' His enthusiasm is shared by Haruna Hadi, who was instrumental in Remo Stars' title-winning season. The midfielder sees CHAN as a platform to launch his international career. 'I know what I can give. I'm determined, focused, and ready to give my all to the team,' Hadi said. 'It has been my dream to participate in the CHAN and play for the Super Eagles. This is like a dream come true for me—a stepping stone to the next level.' Kabiru Mohammed of Kwara United praised Chelle's coaching style, describing it as intense and demanding. 'He loves aggressive football, and training under him has been intense. He likes his players to press whenever they are not with the ball,' the midfielder noted. With the tournament exclusively reserved for players active in their domestic leagues, Nigeria will be looking to better their past performances and challenge for the title when the 8th edition of CHAN gets underway. The tournament runs until 30 August.
