Granny accidentally 'burns eyes' of spa guests after letting off pepper spray
The 80-year-old woman was in the entrance of Eugen-Keidel thermal spa in Freiburg, south west Germany, when she pulled out her pepper spray to show a friend.
But when the pensioner accidentally pressed down on the weapon, she let off the substance into the air.
The chemicals quickly spread through the spa's ventilation system in the building.
As many as 13 guests to the thermal baths were injured as emergency services swarmed the leisure centre in large numbers, police said. More Trending
The elderly woman herself was also treated paramedics, Bild newspaper reports.
She is also now being investigated by the police.
The active ingredient in pepper spray is called oleoresin capsicum (OC).
It is a natural oil found in many hot peppers, including cayenne peppers and other chili peppers.
OC also contains capsaicin, a compound which is what makes things like hot pepper taste spicy.
Just one milligram of the odorless, flavourless compound can cause blisters to your skin.
In a pepper spray, OC oil is mixed with a water-based or oil-based solution.
It is then mixed with something to make it shoot out of the canister once it is pressurised inside.
Pepper spray is illegal to buy, sell or carry in the UK and is classed as an offensive weapon.
Police officers in the UK do use a similar substance called PAVA spray.
It is carried by most frontline officers and uses a synthetic version of capsaicin.
The spa had to be evacuated for 30 minutes, and the fire department had to mechanically ventilate the entrance area.
Guests were then allowed back into the thermal baths once the pepper spray was out of the air.

A horrified mum discovered a hissing 7ft snake slithering through her child's bedroom. Natasha Robinson thought her fiancé Gary Minshull was playing a prank when she discovered the Taiwanese Beauty Rat Snake in their children's bedroom. But the 34-year-old's jaw dropped when she spotted the serpent's tongue suddenly flick in and out of its mouth. Shaolin Temple leader under investigation on suspicion of embezzling funds
Shi Yongxin was alleged to have committed criminal offences and seriously violated the Buddhist precepts by maintaining relationships with multiple women over a long period and fathering at least one child, according to a notice from the temple's authority on its WeChat account. The notice said multiple departments are conducting a joint investigation against Shi Yongxin, and relevant findings would be announced to the public in due course. The fame of the Shaolin Temple, based in the central Chinese province of Henan, has gone beyond a religious institution. It is also famous for its martial arts culture, or kung fu, which has been referenced in many movies and TV dramas, including the 1982 film The Shaolin Temple, starring martial arts superstar Jet Li. The news about Shi Yongxin, whose original name Liu Yingcheng, ranked top on Chinese search engine Baidu and X-like social media platform Weibo on Sunday night. Local media reported that the abbot had been hit by scandalous accusations in the past, including claims that he fathered several children and embezzled money. According to news outlet Caixin Global, provincial investigation reports exonerated him of all charges in 2016. Shi Yongxin entered Shaolin Temple in 1981 and became its abbot in 1999, according to the temple's website.
