‘The future of commerce is conversational and Gen AI will be a gamechanger'

The future of commerce is conversational as people are messaging businesses and they want in real-time, convenient, and personalised conversations. 'And they want it all within the app they already use. WhatsApp, in particular, is at the heart of this transformation. Globally, 1 billion people message a business every week. Every day, we see over 600 million conversations between people and businesses on our platforms. In India, which is one of our largest markets, more than 60% of people on WhatsApp message a business account every single week — a clear sign that conversational platforms are becoming the new storefront,' Ravi Garg, Director, Business Messaging, Meta in India, told TNIE.
From managing orders to offering personalised customer service within a WhatsApp chat, small businesses have started using the WhatsApp Business app. 'It's not just businesses embracing WhatsApp — consumers, too, are increasingly seeking real-time, conversational interactions with businesses.. Whether it's accessing banking services, buying groceries, or raising service requests, people want convenience and immediacy in their conversations with a business,' he said.
To meet the demand, it introduced the WhatsApp Business Platform for large businesses. Businesses are building end-to-end solutions on WhatsApp by combining automation, AI, and personalisation.
Garg points out that IndiGo has launched 6Eskai, its AI-powered conversational assistant on WhatsApp. 6Eskai enables customers to book tickets, check in, get boarding passes, track flights, and resolve queries via text or voice in English, Hindi, and Tamil. 'Today, customers also want multiple options in how they chat with a business, especially when they have complicated travel requests or want to discuss opening a new account with their bank, a quick call can be the best way to get help,' he said.
To address this, they are introducing the ability for people to now call businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform with a quick tap. It has started testing this feature and will expand it to more businesses in the coming months.
Talking about Gen AI, he said the next phase of growth is Generative AI. 'Nearly 95% of enterprises in India are familiar with GenAI, and over 80% plan to invest in it in the next 1–2 years. As GenAI gets embedded into conversational platforms, it will power smarter automation, unlock personalization at scale, and help businesses communicate across languages and markets more effortlessly than ever before,' Garg said.
When asked how it is leveraging AI? Garg said they started by making it easy to activate AI directly from the WhatsApp Business app to help businesses more efficiently engage with their customers.
'We started testing this here in India with a very small number of businesses and the early results are really exciting. We'll start rolling this out to many more businesses here in India in the coming weeks,' he said.
As any small business continues to grow, it often faces a challenge of managing a high volume of customer inquiries due to resource constraints. This is where GenAI will be a gamechanger and this is where we are testing the ability for a business to activate AI in their chats with customers to provide support and help sell their goods and services, he added.

Meta's push into defense tech reflects cultural shift, CTO says

Meta Platforms Inc. Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth said that the 'tides have turned' in Silicon Valley and made it more palatable for the tech industry to support the US military's efforts. There's long existed a 'silent majority' who wanted to pursue defence projects, Bosworth said during an interview at the Bloomberg Tech summit in San Francisco on Wednesday. 'There's a much stronger patriotic underpinning than I think people give Silicon Valley credit for,' he said. Silicon Valley was founded on military development and 'there's really a long history here that we are kind of hoping to return to, but it is not even day one,' Bosworth added. Meta announced a new partnership with defence contractor Anduril Industries Inc. last week to develop products for the US military, including an artificial intelligence-powered helmet with virtual and augmented reality features. Bosworth described Silicon Valley's new openness to work with the US military as a 'return to grace.' Bosworth is one of the company's most visible leaders. After serving in various engineering-focused roles over the last two decades, he now oversees the social media giant's Reality Labs unit. His team is focused on virtual and augmented reality devices, including its Ray-Ban Meta glasses and Quest VR headsets. 'History has its eyes on us,' Bosworth said, noting that he expects this year to be particularly consequential for his team. 'Do people adopt the technology or do they not?' he asked of the Reality Labs' products, suggesting that the market will determine their success.

Eminem's publisher drags Meta to court over copyright violation

Eminem's publisher has filed a copyright lawsuit against Facebook and Instagram owner Meta over unauthorised use of over 200 songs, according to a report by Rolling Stones. The lawsuit was filed by Eight Mile Style, which administers Eminem's early catalogue release, on May 30. The Lose Yourself fame rapper is not personally involved in the suit, he clarified in a separate statement. The lawsuit alleges that Meta violated the copyright of 243 songs from Eminem's catalogue through the 'unauthorised storage, reproduction and exploitation' of the tracks on its platforms. 'This case involves Meta's knowing infringement of the Eight Mile Compositions by first reproducing and storing them in Meta's online Music Libraries, and then distributing them for users to select and incorporate into their own photos and videos made available for public streaming on the users' WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram accounts,' the report cited the complaint as saying. The publishing house added that the social media apps' features, including Original Audio and Reels on Instagram, were tools that 'allow and encourage its users to steal' Eminem's music to use in video content 'without proper attribution or license', the report said. The company has demanded monetary damages for 'the diminished value of the copyrights by defendants' theft of them, lost profits, and defendants' profits attributable to the infringement,' the report said. It is seeking maximum statutory damages of $150,000 for wilful copyright infringement for each of the 243 titles, amounting to $109.35 million. In response to the lawsuit, a Meta spokesperson told the publication that it has licenses with thousands of partners and an extensive global licensing program for music on its platforms. Meta had been negotiating in good faith with Eight Mile Style, but rather than continue those discussions, Eight Mile Style chose to sue, the spokesperson fresh lawsuit comes after Eight Mile Style lost its five-year-long copyright legal battle against Spotify last September due to a legal loophole.
