BAYAN LEPAS: Police have detained a 26-year-old man suspected of being involved in the theft of PMU0123 chip components belonging to a multinational electronics company operating in the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone.
Southwest police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam said preliminary investigations revealed that the company conducted an internal audit and reviewed closed-circuit television footage, which led to the identification of the suspect, a former employee, as a suspicious individual.
"The suspect is believed to have taken eight units of the chip from the company's store and sold them to unknown individuals near the bus stop in front of the Osram factory.
"Further investigation is underway," he said when contacted.
Sazalee said the arrest was made in the vicinity of the Teluk Kumbar police station.
He said police also seized an iPhone 12 Pro Max belonging to the suspect.
The case is being investigated under Section 381 of the Penal Code, which addresses theft by a clerk or servant.
It specifically targets individuals who, while employed as a clerk or servant, steal property from their employers.
The punishment for such theft is imprisonment for a term that may extend to seven years, and they can also be fined.
On another matter, Sazalee said police nabbed a 56-year-old man on suspicion of robbing four bracelets from a child in Kampung Seronok on April 29.
"The suspect, who is unemployed and has a criminal record for 22 drug-related offences and two criminal offences, admitted to being involved in the incident," he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery, which carries a jail term of up to 14 years, and may also include a fine or whipping upon conviction.
