Top men's and mixed doubles pairs FeiDin, Soon Huat-Shevon lead dominant Malaysian charge at Singapore Open
SINGAPORE, May 29 — Malaysia's world number one men's doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, powered into the Singapore Open 2025 quarterfinals with a dominant win in an all-Malaysian second-round clash today.
The world number one duo delivered a polished performance to overcome Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King, ranked 23rd in the world, with a convincing 21-13, 21-11 victory in 33 minutes at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Nur Izzuddin said their main focus was simply to give their best in today's match.
'We just focused on our preparation, enjoyed the game, and did our best,' he told Bernama, adding that they now aim to carry the momentum into the next round.
Meanwhile, Wan Arif and Roy King said they would focus on improving ahead of the Indonesia Open 2025 next week.
Wan Arif-Roy King will open their Indonesia Open 2025 campaign against French duo Eloi Adam-Leo Rossi.
'Although our performance today was better, we were still inconsistent and made too many mistakes. Next, we'll try to enjoy the game in the Indonesia Open and hope for a better result,' said Wan Arif.
In the mixed doubles event, Malaysia's top-seeded duo Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie also marched into the quarterfinals after a solid straight-game win over China's newly formed pair Feng Yan Zhe and Wei Ya Xin, triumphing 21-11, 21-19 in 34 minutes.
Shevon credited her husband and partner Soon Huat for his grit and determination in bouncing back from injury.
'Before the match, there was still some uncertainty. Our performance at the Malaysia Masters last week wasn't as consistent as we hoped. I really give credit to my partner because he worked really hard to play the way he did today,' she said.
Last week, Soon Huat-Shevon failed to defend their Malaysia Masters title as they were sent packing by Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch of Denmark, 18-21, 19-21, in the opening round.
Soon Huat said their success relies on mutual trust and motivation.
'What matters most is supporting and encouraging each other, believing in one another, and never giving up,' he said.
They will next face sixth-seeded Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran, who defeated China's Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi 21-19, 21-18.
Four more national pairs -- Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (men's doubles), Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (men's doubles), Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah (women's doubles), and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles) -- will also be in action today, alongside the country's sole representative in the men's singles, Leong Jun Hao. — Bernama

At a gathering of Teoh's family and civil society groups tonight, A Jayanath of Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia issued a blunt message to politicians who once stood with the family as they sought justice. 'During a protest for Teoh in 2009, many politicians from the opposition were then present. But tonight I don't see any of them. 'This is something all of us need to understand – politicians will make use of any issue (for their own benefit),' he said at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here, where the participants gathered to remember Teoh and demand accountability. Jayanath challenged those who once pledged support for Teoh to reflect on their role now that they are in government. He added that many of them had pledged to introduce institutional reforms once in power and ensure justice is served for Teoh. 'I am only making a very short speech — one call to these politicians. Tomorrow morning, can you please look at yourself in the mirror and ask what you are going to do about this? 'We have not seen (your efforts), and we are giving you one last chance to (ensure justice for Teoh).' Jayanath also called on those attending the gathering to take action by writing to their respective MPs and assemblymen to urge them to raise Teoh's case in Parliament or the state assemblies. Last week, the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement urged all DAP ministers to resign in protest of the Attorney-General's Chambers' decision to classify the investigation into Teoh's case as requiring no further action, or NFA. The group said the ministers should also take responsibility on behalf of DAP for failing to fulfil the party's past promises involving Teoh. None of the DAP ministers have responded to the call yet. Teoh's sister, Lee Lan, also did not hold back in her remarks at the gathering, delivering a strong and emotional message to government leaders. 'Back then, all PH leaders told Malaysia that Teoh was murdered and that when they attain power, they will act on the case. 'But why was the investigation classified as NFA? This is a slap in the face for all PH supporters.' She also reminded Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim that he had promised to ensure justice for Teoh once appointed to the top post. Last month, Teoh's family was informed by police that their latest investigation into the case had been classified as NFA. Teoh was found dead on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). An inquest was held and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. While the police's latest investigation was classified as NFA, several quarters have questioned why the probe was launched under Section 342 of the Penal Code, which is for wrongful confinement.

2025 Indonesia Open: Men's doubles pairs move into second round
WORLD number one doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Mohd Rumsani had to sweat it out to advance to the second round of the Indonesia Open after defeating Taiwan's Fang Chih Lee-Fang Jen Lee. In the match held at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, the Malaysian professional duo came from a set down, losing the first 17-21, to win the next two sets 21-17, 21-14. Awaiting Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin in the second round this Thursday are compatriots Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, who successfully defeated China's Xie Hao Nan-Zeng Wei Han 21-12, 21-17. Also advancing to the next round are the 2025 Malaysia Masters champions, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. The world number seven ranked pair had no trouble, taking just 21 minutes to beat their opponents from the US, Chen Zhi Yi-Presley Smith 21-6, 21-11 in staright games. 8 change pleas to not guilty on charges of extortion, threatening to kill man

(File pic) PETALING JAYA : Eight people, including a woman known as 'Bella', changed their pleas from guilty to not guilty at the Johor Bahru magistrates' court today on charges of extorting, confining and threatening to kill a man in Plentong last April. Bella, whose real name is Nuredrianna Balqqisyh Anabella Norazman, 22, and the other seven recorded the change in plea on three charges before magistrate A Shaarmini today, Bernama reported. The other seven are Aqmal Hafifi Mustafa Kamal, 25, Ahmad Rushdi Jumadi, 23, Nur Shafiq Abdullah, 25, Haikal Zulkarnain, 19, Amierul Hakim Shamsuri, 23, Danish Hakim Kamaruddin, 20, and Syamsul Hamiziey Saiful Razali, 19. On the first charge, they were jointly accused of criminal intimidation by issuing death threats to Faris Syahmi Ridzwan, 22. On the second charge, the eight, along with two others still at large, were accused of extortion by threatening Faris to pay them RM3,000 or face further assault by the group. This allegedly led to the victim handing over RM650 in cash and the key to his motorcycle to one of the accused, Amierul. On the third charge, all the accused, along with two others still at large, were jointly accused of wrongfully confining the victim. All eight had pleaded guilty before magistrate Atifah Hazimah Wahab to the three charges on April 25. In separate proceedings before magistrate Nur Fatin Farid today, the seven men also changed their pleas to not guilty on a fourth charge of voluntarily causing hurt to the same victim, along with one other accomplice still at large. The seven men had pleaded guilty to the fourth charge before Atifah on April 25. All the alleged offences were said to have been committed at a flat in Plentong, Masai, between 10pm and 4am, from April 18 to 19. The first three charges were framed under Sections 506, 384 and 342 of the Penal Code respectively, while the fourth charge under Section 323 of the same Code. The offences carry penalties of imprisonment of up to 10 years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction. Syamsul was represented by counsel Nurul Nadia Yunos, Amierul by T Haressh, Aqmal by Khairulazwad Sariman and Rushdi by Syahmi Nawawi. The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutors Nik Noratini Nik Azman and Nur Fatihah Nizam. Both Shaarmini and Fatin fixed July 17 for the next mention of the case, submission of documents, and for the accused who are yet to be represented to appoint counsel.
