Top men's and mixed doubles pairs FeiDin, Soon Huat-Shevon lead dominant Malaysian charge at Singapore Open

SINGAPORE, May 29 — Malaysia's world number one men's doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, powered into the Singapore Open 2025 quarterfinals with a dominant win in an all-Malaysian second-round clash today. The world number one duo delivered a polished performance to overcome Wan Arif Wan Junaidi and Yap Roy King, ranked 23rd in the world, with a convincing 21-13, 21-11 victory in 33 minutes at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. Nur Izzuddin said their main focus was simply to give their best in today's match. 'We just focused on our preparation, enjoyed the game, and did our best,' he told Bernama, adding that they now aim to carry the momentum into the next round. Meanwhile, Wan Arif and Roy King said they would focus on improving ahead of the Indonesia Open 2025 next week. Wan Arif-Roy King will open their Indonesia Open 2025 campaign against French duo Eloi Adam-Leo Rossi. 'Although our performance today was better, we were still inconsistent and made too many mistakes. Next, we'll try to enjoy the game in the Indonesia Open and hope for a better result,' said Wan Arif. In the mixed doubles event, Malaysia's top-seeded duo Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie also marched into the quarterfinals after a solid straight-game win over China's newly formed pair Feng Yan Zhe and Wei Ya Xin, triumphing 21-11, 21-19 in 34 minutes. Shevon credited her husband and partner Soon Huat for his grit and determination in bouncing back from injury. 'Before the match, there was still some uncertainty. Our performance at the Malaysia Masters last week wasn't as consistent as we hoped. I really give credit to my partner because he worked really hard to play the way he did today,' she said. Last week, Soon Huat-Shevon failed to defend their Malaysia Masters title as they were sent packing by Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch of Denmark, 18-21, 19-21, in the opening round. Soon Huat said their success relies on mutual trust and motivation. 'What matters most is supporting and encouraging each other, believing in one another, and never giving up,' he said. They will next face sixth-seeded Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran, who defeated China's Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi 21-19, 21-18. Four more national pairs -- Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (men's doubles), Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (men's doubles), Pearly (women's doubles), and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (mixed doubles) -- will also be in action today, alongside the country's sole representative in the men's singles, Leong Jun Hao. — Bernama

A bigger and more lucrative Malaysian Open on the cards

Malaysia's Goh Sze Fei - Nur Izzuddin in action for mens double match during the Malaysia Open 2025 at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Open could be set for a major revamp, with a longer duration and increased prize money on the cards. Under the Badminton World Federation's (BWF) new Super 1000 concept, the men's and women's singles will feature a group-stage format with 48 entries each, while the doubles events will retain a 32-pair knockout draw. The tournament is expected to span 11 days, ending on a Sunday. And under this new format, a total of 219 matches are expected to be played throughout the tournament. Prize money will also be increased, with BWF set to cover the minimum prize commitments, easing the financial burden on hosts. Another key change will see Super 100 tournaments fully integrated into the BWF World Tour's commercial framework from 2027. Consequently, the number of Super 100 events will be trimmed from 10 to eight annually, while Super 300 tournaments will also be reduced from 11 to eight . Both levels, however, are expected to be upgraded in terms of profile and presentation. However, the tournament duration for these two tiers including Super 750 and Super 500 will remain at six competition days. "We want to ensure a clear differentiation between the levels of events to highlight the prominence of the highest-level events, while still maintaining a family relationship between the tournaments under the BWF World Tour umbrella brand. 'Top players must also consistently perform at the highest levels of the structure,' said BWF, describing one of the objectives they hope to achieve through this new concept. Malaysia has been among the elite Super 1000 hosts since 2023, alongside the All-England, Indonesian Open and China Open. However, that status is only guaranteed until 2026, and it remains uncertain whether the Malaysian Open will continue to feature at the top tier in the next cycle. Still, the BWF are assuming that hosts from the 2023–2026 cycle will be keen to continue staging the same tournaments at the same level in the 2027–2030 calendar, with a final decision expected around November. At the same time, the world body are inviting member associations to show their interest to host one or more tournaments in the next cycle, based on the newly proposed structure. Concerns over the congested calendar and modest prize money in badminton have been raised before including by legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei. Earlier this year, two-time Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen also urged the BWF to extend Super 1000 tournaments like the Malaysian Open, much like tennis Grand Slams, to give players more time to rest and recover between intense matches.

Malaysian Men's Doubles Pair Goh Sze Fei & Nur Izzuddin Now Ranked World No.1

Congratulations to Malaysian shuttlers Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin! The men's doubles pair now sit comfortably at first place on the world ranking, marking the first time in almost ten years that our local badminton pairs have ranked No.1. Following the conclusion of the Malaysian Masters last week, the newly updated Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings see a new world No.1 men's doubles pair. Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin, known fondly as FeiDin, overtook Denmark's Kim Astriup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen after the latter pair failed to defend their Malaysian Masters title. The two lost to fellow Malaysian men's double pairing Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. Despite losing in their Malaysian Masters' quarter-final match, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin's consistent performance over the past year helped propel them to the top of the world ranking. Their wins in 2024 include the China Open, Japan Open and the Arctic Open. The pair's win at the India Open in January 2025 solidified their position at the top of the ranking, helping them rise to their previous spot of World No.2. Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin's new ranking is also significant as it marks the first time a Malaysian badminton player duo has ranked first on the BWF ranking since 2016. The last Malaysian pair to achieve this ranking was Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong in 2016. Meanwhile, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik's highest world ranking in their career was No. 2. They're now ranked No.3, following the Denmark pair. Fans have congratulated the pair, expressing pride over their new ranking. Some fans also expressed gratitude towards Soh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin for their hard work, noting that the two have been through many hardships. The duo first partnered up in 2017 but split in 2023, citing a lack of connection. They reunited a few months later but still faced a series of losses. However, their persistence and improved performance saw more victories in 2024, getting them to where they are now. We would also like to congratulate Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin on their new world ranking. The pair will play at the Singapore Badminton Open, which starts today (27th May 2025, Tuesday).
