Sze Fei-Izzuddin survive early scare in Indonesia Open
PETALING JAYA : World No 1 men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani overcame an early scare to defeat Taiwan's Lee Fang Chih-Lee Fang Jen in the opening round of the Indonesia Open.
The 19th ranked Taiwanese twins had shocked the top seeds by taking the first game, before the Malaysians made a comeback to win 17-21, 21-17, 21-14 at the Istora Stadium in Jakarta tonight.
Sze Fei-Izzuddin had to labour for an hour before they sealed the match and booked their berth in the last 16.
The Malaysians have faced setback after setback this year, failing to get past the quarter-final stage in various tournaments, including two first-round exits.
The duo won three World Tour titles in 2023 and another three in 2024, but have not won a single one this year.
Today's tie was Sze Fei-Izzuddin's seventh time facing the Taiwanese pair, with the Malaysians winning six of the encounters.
In the last 16, Sze Fei-Izzuddin will take on their world No 22 compatriots Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, who staged an upset by beating the No 14 ranked Chinese duo of Xie Hao Nan-Zeng Wei Han 21-17, 21-12.
Fellow men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun also progressed to the last 16 after making light work of American duo Chen Zhi Yi-Presley Smith, winning 21-6, 21-11 in just 21 minutes.
The Malaysians will meet compatriots Junaidi Arif-Yap Roy King, who received a walkover from French pair Eloi Adam-Leo Rossi.

Chinese tourists to get visa-free entry
South Korea will offer visa-free entry to tourist groups from China, for a temporary period from Sept 29 through June 2026, to boost foreign tourism ahead of an Asia-Pacific summit, the government said. Rexy: Shuttlers must have same focus and desire of coaches to succeed at worlds

PETALING JAYA: National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky believes that the shuttlers and coaches need to have the same goals if they hope to succeed in the World Championships. With the world meet coming up from Aug 25-31 in Paris, Rexy faces a pivotal task to make sure the players are at their best mentally and physically to fight for glory. The Indonesian though stressed that it's not enough for the coaches to want to succeed but players also must aim high in the prestigious meet. 'Coaches are not the only ones who must want to succeed. Players must also want the same,' said Rexy. 'There's no point if only the coaches set certain targets but players don't have the same focus or desire. 'Players need to know what they want to achieve too and work towards it. The right mindset is very important.' Malaysia's best chance for medals in Paris will be in the men's doubles through world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 3 independent pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi (No. 22). In the past three editions, only the men's doubles have contributed medals for Malaysia. Aaron-Wooi Yik remain the only shuttlers to have captured the title when they triumphed in the 2022 edition in Tokyo. The pair also won bronze in 2023 in Copenhagen while Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi claimed bronze as well in 2021 in Huelva, Spain. This time, hopes are also on world No. 2 women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah to win what will be a historic medal after a breakthrough year so far. Pearly-Thinaah captured the Thailand Open and finished runners-up in the Japan Open, Indonesian Open and Masters and will be out to end the country's wait for a medal in the women's doubles in the world meet. Rexy feels that his charges' preparations will be key to their hopes of glory. 'In badminton, sometimes we have a short time to prepare for tournaments, other times, there will be longer time,' said Rexy. 'So, coaches need to figure out ways to get the players in the best possible shape for this competition.'

(AP pic) SEOUL : Departing Tottenham captain Son Heung-min was in tears and his teammates threw him in the air on an emotional evening in his native South Korea today. Spurs drew 1-1 with Newcastle in a pre-season friendly in Seoul but that was secondary to the farewell for the 33-year-old attacker. In what could have been his final game for the north Londoners, Son played 65 minutes but did not score at Seoul World Cup Stadium, a day after announcing his decision to leave Tottenham this summer after a decade. He left the pitch to a thunderous ovation from nearly 65,000 fans, hugging his teammates and even his opponents. The South Korean captain was caught offside twice in the early going, as his teammates tried to create opportunities for him, but didn't really assert himself on the match otherwise. Son was replaced in the 65th minute by Mohammed Kudus and he walked off in tears as thousands of fans chanted his name. 'I didn't think I was going to cry at first,' Son said. 'But after hearing a few words from my teammates, leaving the club I've spent so much time with felt really tough. 'I felt really, really happy playing this match.
