Diogo Jota's agent in tears speaking after morgue visit where bodies were taken

Daily Mirror04-07-2025
Agent Jorge Mendes was among those to visit the mortuary where Diogo Jota and his brother's bodies were being held on Thursday after the Liverpool star's tragic death in a car accident
Diogo Jota's agent, Jorge Mendes, visited the mortuary where the late Liverpool star and his brother's bodies were being held in floods of tears. The 28-year-old forward lost his life in a tragic car accident alongside his younger sibling Andre Silva.
Heartbreaking news broke on Thursday morning that Reds star Jota and his brother, 26, had passed away after a car accident in Zamora province, Spain. The Lamborghini they were travelling in suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking and veered off the road, catching fire. Both Jota and his brother were declared dead at the scene.

Super agent Mendes, who counsels some of Portuguese football's biggest names, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho, had long worked with the Liverpool forward, even since he arrived in the Premier League with Wolves.

Mendes spoke to reporters after his visit to the Puebla de Sanabria mortuary in Zamora, where Jota and his brother's bodies were being kept until Thursday evening.
"We lost two great people. Diogo is an example as a person, husband, son, professional. I still can't believe it, it's very difficult," confessed Mendes in tears.
Mendes arrived alongside Jota's mother and travelled to Spain to be with the grieving family. Jota and his brother's bodies were kept at the location until Thursday evening, when the hearses departed for the Liverpool forward's hometown of Gondomar, near Porto in Portugal.
They arrived just before midnight and were met by crowds of mourning fans, many of whom applauded as the vehicles arrived almost 24 hours after the tragic crash. Jota and his brother's funerals are set to take place at 10am on Saturday morning. A vigil is due to take place at Sao Cosme Chapel before a funeral service at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar.
Many fellow clients of Mendes and international team-mates have paid their respects to the late Jota, including Portugal captain Ronaldo, who wrote on Instagram: "It doesn't make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married.

"To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you."
Current Fenerbahce manager Mourinho also released a statement: "The loss of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva is a great tragedy and an immense injustice for someone who was so young and had so much life ahead of him. I send my deepest condolences to all their family and friends."

Manchester City's Ruben Dias is another who shared the pitch with Jota for Portugal. He also relayed his heartache, saying: "I still can't believe it. You won your first Premier League, we won the Nations League together, and you got married. It doesn't make sense.
"We will not forget you, as a man, as a father, as a brother, as a son and as the tireless and talented team-mate you always were on the field. May you both rest in peace."

Arsenal transfer news: Man Utd attempt to hijack Viktor Gyokeres deal as legal letter issued

Arsenal have headed off on their pre-season tour of south east Asia without Viktor Gyokeres - and now Manchester United are trying to muscle in on their deal for the Sporting striker Arsenal are focusing on two more deals after wrapping up four transfers in the summer window so far. ‌ The Gunners completed the signing of Noni Madueke in a £52million transfer from Chelsea on Friday as Mikel Arteta got his way in the transfer market. Madueke's arrival followed those of Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard and took their spending to around £134m for the summer. ‌ Finishing second in the Premier League three times in succession means that Arsenal know they need significant strengthening this summer. And that means sporting director Andrea Berta remains an extremely busy man. ‌ His focus is currently on getting the transfer of Viktor Gyokeres over the line, while the announcement of Cristhian Mosquera is just around the corner. Mosquera is in the bag, with Arsenal simply awaiting confirmation from La Liga, but Gyokeres is a different story. Here are the latest stories concerning the Gunners. Man Utd bid for Gyokeres Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon verbally agreed a deal in principle for Gyokeres last weekend, but they have so far failed to yield a full agreement. And that could prove costly if reports from Portugal are true. SIC says Arsenal's deal is 'increasingly at risk'. They say the fixed offer set at €63.5m (£55m), which rises to €70m (£60m) is not acceptable for Sporting, who have now received another bidder. ‌ United have thrown a cat amongst the pigeons by offering €70-80million (£60-69m).Record says that Gyokeres – who played under Ruben Amorim at Sporting – still only wants to join Arsenal, however. But with Sporting president Federico Varandas chasing the best deal, it could be telling. Legal letter issued Things have become increasingly bitter between Gyokeres and Sporting. The Swedish striker is on strike, refusing to report for pre-season training and is convinced he had a gentleman's agreement with the club for a transfer this summer. ‌ Sporting have begun legal proceedings against their own player over his continued no-show at the training ground. And now Gyokeres has responded with a legal letter in which he doubles down on his promise never to play for the club again and fires back at Varandas over his refusal to make good on this apparent agreement. Eze alternative identified Arsenal could turn to RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons as a cheaper alternative for Ebererchi Eze, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Gunners are one of the sides interested in signing Crystal Palace star Eze, but he is valued at £68m by the south London side. ‌ Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said Arsenal and Chelsea both contacted Leipzig in June to discuss Simons, who previously played alongside Madueke at PSV Eindhoven. There has been no further contact and Romano believes that Arsenal will focus on selling players like Reiss Nelson before pursuing a deal for Eze or Simons. Howe confident Isak will stay at Newcastle after striker left out of thrashing by Celtic

Eddie Howe is confident Alexander Isak will stay at Newcastle this summer despite omitting the striker from a pre-season thrashing by Celtic because of speculation over his future. Isak was left out of the 4-0 defeat at Celtic Park on Saturday despite being fit to play. The Newcastle manager claimed the decision was taken to manage the striker's minutes in pre-season, but also as a consequence of recent transfer speculation. Liverpool's long-held interest in the Sweden international was confirmed this week with the Premier League champions being prepared to pay a British record transfer fee to make him their new No 9. Liverpool have since turned their attentions to Eintracht Frankfurt forward and Newcastle target Hugo Ekitike after being informed Isak is not for sale. The champions remain in talks over a fee for Ekitike, who is understood to have a €100m (£87m) release clause in his Eintracht contract, with a deal expected to be completed next week. Germany's Sky Sport reported on Saturday night that a second written bid had been submitted. Howe admitted Newcastle are 'desperate' to keep Isak, who has three years remaining on his contract, but added he could not give '100% clarity' on any player's future. The Newcastle manager said of the striker's absence in Glasgow: 'It was my decision. He travelled back to Glasgow with us but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him. The last thing he wanted is to be sat in the stand watching, that wasn't fair to him. But I'm confident he will be a Newcastle player come the end of the window.' Howe, who also omitted Joelinton against the Scottish champions, added: 'It's difficult for me to give 100% clarity on any player. Alex is happy at Newcastle, he loves the players, the staff, the team. I'm confident he'll be here at the start of the season. Yes, I've had discussions with him but that's not abnormal. I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him.' Liverpool's decision to go for Ekitike, who made it clear he favoured a move to Anfield over St James' Park before Newcastle pulled out of the race for the striker, represents another frustration in what has been a problematic transfer window for Howe. Newcastle have also missed out on João Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo and Liam Delap while their long-running pursuit of Burnley's £40m-rated goalkeeper James Trafford is now in doubt with Manchester City linked with their former player. Howe and his nephew, Andy Howe, have been overseeing much of Newcastle's recruitment this summer, with Paul Mitchell having left as sporting director and Darren Eales due to depart on health grounds. They have completed only one signing so far, the £55m purchase of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest. 'But we're confident we can get in some players who can strengthen the team. We wanted more.' Celtic took the lead on Saturday from a 28th-minute Arne Engels penalty, then Johnny Kenny tapped in after Nick Pope misjudged an attempted clearance to make it 2-0 just before the break. Yang Hyun-jun and Liam Scales then added two more after both sides rang the changes at half-time, including Newcastle introducing Elanga for the first time.

Man Utd transfer news: Secret striker talks emerge as Ruben Amorim hints at next priority

Manchester United will be eager to do more business after striking an agreement with Brentford to sign Bryan Mbeumo but Ruben Amorim and Co may need outgoings first Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Bryan Mbeumo after weeks of talks with Brentford, but the Red Devils are not expected to stop there in the transfer market. ‌ Pending a medical and final details, Mbeumo will join Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon through the door at Old Trafford as United's third summer signing. The 25-year-old attacker will join for a financial package which could reach £71million if all add-ons are met, with United paying a base fee of £65m across four instalments. ‌ Outgoings will now be needed if United are to pursue further signings with funds at a premium this summer. ‌ Marcus Rashford is closing in on an initial loan move to Barcelona, while Jadon Sancho and Juventus are said to be in advanced talks over a transfer. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer news from in and around Old Trafford... United's secret Jackson talks Manchester United have spoken with the agent of Nicolas Jackson over a potential swoop for the Chelsea striker, who could leave Stamford Bridge with the Blues strengthening in attack this summer. ‌ United are expected to pursue a No 9 before the transfer window shuts on 1 September and it has previously been reported that Jackson, 24, is not viewed as an 'untouchable' by Chelsea, who have snapped up Liam Delap and Joao Pedro ahead of the new season. BBC Sport have now revealed that United have held talks with Jackson's representative, Ali Barat, over a move. Outgoings would be required for a deal to come to fruition, though. Amorim hints at priority ‌ Ruben Amorim singled out Manchester United's lack of pace in midfield following Saturday's 0-0 draw with Leeds. The Red Devils are expected to move on to other targets - provided they can offload some of their unwanted stars - after reaching an agreement for the transfer of Bryan Mbeumo and Amorim's comments could indicate that he would like to add in the midfield area. He said: "It was a pre-season game. The gaps between our sectors was sometimes too big. We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park and you can feel it is hard to win and bring the ball. But we created chances." ‌ Shock Gyokeres twist Portuguese outlet SIC Noticias claims that Manchester United are close to an agreement with Sporting Lisbon for Viktor Gyokeres. The 27-year-old striker knows Ruben Amorim well from his time in Lisbon but seems destined to join Arsenal following negotiations between the Gunners and Sporting. But with both sides struggling to lock down a final agreement, it's now been claimed United could yet hijack Arsenal's move for Gyokeres.
