Head helps Klaasen give Sunrisers winning send-off
The sun has already set on Sunrisers Hyderbad's Indian Premier League ambitions but Travis Head has helped ensure something of a warm end-of-season glow.
The Australian batter contributed fully as Hyderabad scored 3-278 - the third highest in IPL history - as they beat Kolkata Knight Riders, who have also failed to make the play-offs, by 110 runs in their final match of the season.
Openers Abhishek Sharma (32 off 16) and Head put on 92 off 41 balls after Hyderabad opted to bat first.
Head scored 76 off 40 deliveries, with six sixes but if that was impressive, there was even better to come from Heinrich Klaasen, who smashed an undefeated 105 off 39 balls
Klaasen, the league's most expensive overseas player, hit nine sixes and seven fours in his second IPL century to help Hyderabad pile on a massive total. In reply, Kolkata were bowled out for 168 in 18.4 overs in Delhi.
Klaasen was promoted to No. 3 and combined with Head to add 83 off only 35 balls for the second wicket.
Klaasen got to 50 from only 17 balls. The South African then shared a partnership of 83 off six overs with Ishan Kishan (29 off 20) and reached his ton off 37 balls.
In reply, Kolkata's Sunil Narine scored 31 off 16 balls but did not get support from the top-order.
Kolkata were down to 5-70 in eight overs and the chase was pretty much done. Manish Pandey top-scored with 37 off 23 balls.
Jaydev Unadkat (3-24), Harsh Dubey (3-34) and Eshan Malinga (3-31) did the damage, though Sunrisers' Australian captain, Pat Cummins, failed to strike in his two overs.
Earlier in the day, Dewald Brevis scored 57 runs off 23 balls as bottom side Chennai Super Kings wrapped up their Indian Premier League season in style by routing first-placed Gujarat Titans by 83 runs.
Chennai won the toss and scored 5-230 in their 20 overs with Devon Conway hitting a 35-ball 52. In reply, Gujarat were dismissed for 147 in 18.3 overs.
Gujarat, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians have already secured playoff spots.
Gujarat finished with 18 points from 14 games but their spot in the top two is under threat. Second-placed Punjab (17 points) and fourth-placed Mumbai (16 points) meet on Monday in their last game, and Bengaluru (17 points) face Lucknow Super Giants on Tuesday.
Opener Ayush Mhatre gave Chennai a good start with a 17-ball 34. The big runs came from two overseas batters - New Zealander Conway providing the base, with South Africa's Brevis attacking toward the end.
Conway hit six fours and two sixes. Brevis got four fours and five sixes. Urvil Patel (37 off 19) and Ravindra Jadeja (21 not out off 18) also contributed as Chennai put up a strong total.
Gujarat's chase started badly, reduced to 3-30 in 4.3 overs, and their middle-order disappointed despite the chance to take an insurmountable points lead at the top. Sai Sudharsan top-scored with 41 off 28 balls.
Pacer Anshul Kamboj finished with 3-13, and wrist spinner Noor Ahmed 3-21. Ravindra Jadeja, who opened the bowling, took 2-17.
It was Chennai's fourth win in 14 IPL matches.

Winless Indian launches into LIV Golf Virginia lead
Pursuing his first individual LIV Golf win, India's Anirban Lahiri has recorded a bogey-free second round at seven-under 64 to hold a two-shot lead in Virginia. A runner-up on the breakaway circuit four times, Lahiri sank seven birdies and made a 39-foot par putt on No.16 on Saturday, then finished strong with a par on No.18 after landing in the rough. On the last, he had to get up and down from a distance of more than 100 yards. "Yeah, those felt like birdies as well," Lahiri said of his impressive finish to the day at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. "I think the first 15 holes was about as solid as I could have played. I missed a few putts and I still made quite a lot of birdies. "Then 16, I was trying to hit like an in-between 9-iron and I tried to compress it a little bit too much, and everyone else saw what happened. It was nice to make that putt." Veterans Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell - who are also chasing their first individual LIV Golf win - are at nine under entering Sunday's final round, just two shots behind the leader. "It's always good to be close to the lead, have a chance on the last day," Watson said. "Looking forward to it. Looking forward to the challenge of this golf course ... You hit your driver good, you hit your irons in the right spots, you have a chance to play this golf course." RangeGoats GC captain Watson birdied the 17th and 18th, then closed his round with pars on the first and second en route to a six-under 65. Kaymer, who shared the first-round lead with Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau, shot a four-under 67. McDowell notched three straight birdies on Nos. 15-17 to put himself in contention with a five-under 66. Joaquin Niemann, DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, the top three in the individual standings, are tied for fifth at seven under, four shots off top spot. Marc Leishman (71) is the leading Australian at four under and in joint 14th, with Cameron Smith (70) two under, Lucas Herbert (73) six over and Matt Jones (75) eight over. With AAP.

Josh Hazlewood declares he is in top form ahead of Australia vs South Africa World Test Championship final
Buoyed by an outstanding IPL, Australia quick Josh Hazlewood feels he is bowling better than at any point in his decorated career. Struck down by niggling injuries in recent years, Hazlewood could be forgiven for starting to taper, having already taken 279 wickets from 72 Tests. Follow every ball of the World Test Championship final with the ABC Sport live blog, and the live commentary between Australia and South Africa at Lord's. But the fit-again 34-year-old is going to give selectors significant headaches when picking the team for the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's, starting on Wednesday. It is an identical dilemma to two years ago when Scott Boland was chosen ahead of Hazlewood, who had been recovering from side issues, for the ultimately successful decider against India. "I was quite close last time, I just had more of an interrupted IPL leading into that and wasn't quite up to scratch," Hazlewood said on Saturday at Australia's training base in Beckenham. "But I feel in a much better place this time around, and I think in any format, my numbers over the last two years have been pretty good, so I've got a lot to fall back on. "Skill wise, I still feel like I'm bowling the best I have in my career and it's just a matter of the body holding up, which it has been in the last few months." Hazlewood managed just two Tests last summer, breaking down at the Gabba with a calf injury, as Australia won back the Border-Gavaskar trophy for the first time in a decade. The right-armer also missed the two-Test trip to Sri Lanka, played on spin-friendly pitches, to make sure he was ready to perform later in the year. Although he did suffer a slight shoulder injury, Hazlewood ultimately played a starring role in Royal Challengers Bangalore's breakthrough IPL title triumph last Tuesday. Hazlewood, who also won an IPL title with Chennai in 2021, finished with 22 wickets for the tournament — the third most by any bowler. Coming off a T20 workload, he has less than a week to get ready for his first Test since December. "I ticked over some good overs just before the (IPL) final in Ahmedabad, in different weather than (England's), so it was quite a tough session," Hazlewood said. "Then, every time you play a game in IPL, you're probably going to get almost seven or eight overs in when you factor in warm-ups." AAP
