TIRUPATI: Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister P Narayana, during a visit to Tirupati on Saturday, inspected a legacy waste processing plant and addressed the media on key governance priorities including Amaravati's development, welfare schemes, and waste management.
Reasserting the government's commitment to Amaravati, Narayana said, 'The construction of Amaravati as the capital will not stop,' accusing the previous YSRCP government of obstructing the project. Despite financial constraints, he affirmed that welfare schemes would continue under the NDA government.
Narayana criticised the former CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led administration for leaving the State burdened with Rs 10 lakh crore debt and 85 lakh tonnes of waste. Citing CM Chandrababu Naidu's vision, he said the government aims to convert all legacy waste into fertiliser by October 2 as part of the 'Swachh Andhra' mission. So far, 50 lakh tonnes have been cleared, and 3.5 lakh tonnes will be removed in the next three months.

Air India To Insure Passengers On All Flights For Next Few Months After Ahmedabad Tragedy
Last Updated: A London-bound Air India Flight AI-171 crashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing all but one of its 242 passengers and over 30 on the ground. Following the devastating Air India accident that killed more than 260 people, Air India has decided to insure every passenger on all its flights as a precautionary measure, according to a source in the airline. As per the source, each passenger will be covered for approximately Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. This move will remain in effect for at least the next few months. Three days after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, which has so far claimed over 270 lives, hospital authorities on Sunday confirmed the identification of 47 victims through DNA matching, including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Rupani was among the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 that crashed on Thursday. Only one passengers managed to miraculously survive the crash on that day, while more than 30 people were killed on the ground. Due to the severe condition of many bodies, as they are burnt or disfigured, authorities are relying on DNA matching for identification. '"A total of 47 plane crash victims have been identified so far through DNA matching. Of these, the bodies of 24 victims have been handed over to their respective families. These deceased were from Rajasthan and different parts of Gujarat," Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters. Meanwhile, Air India on Sunday said it is working closely with other Tata group companies to provide every possible assistance to the families and loved ones of the plane crash victims. The airline in a statement also said that over 400 family members have reached Ahmedabad and are being assisted by its teams on the ground. It had earlier promised complete transparency in the investigation into establishing the cause of the accident. PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visited the crash site to assess the situation on Sunday. He was briefed on the sequence of events and interacted with the injured at the Civil Hospital. 'I am very pained by the enormity of the tragedy. Everybody is sad. It is our duty to share grief and express our feelings for the victims," Mishra told reporters. Authorities announced Sunday that the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder, had been recovered. This may offer investigators more clues about what went wrong. There were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian on board the flight, as well as 12 crew members.

Instruct public works department to raze illegal ghat on Ulhas river, Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation tells Maharashtra irrigation department
Ulhasnagar: Days after the state irrigation department declared the ghat being built on Ulhas river using BJP MLA Kumar Ailani's funds as illegal and instructed Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) to demolish it, the civic body said that as public works department (PWD) is building the ghat, it should raze it too. UMC commissioner Manisha Awhale told TOI that they will write to the irrigation department urging them to direct PWD to demolish the illegal ghat. Of the Rs 7-crore ghat project, more than Rs 3 crore has been spent, said sources. In 2022, PWD started work after Ailani disbursed MLA funds to build the ghat for Ganpati immersions and a walking path behind Regency Antilia society. Activist Sarita Khanchandani complained to UMC that hundreds of trees were illegally cut on the banks and cement construction was illegally done inside the river bed. A wall was also built to divert the flow of the river, which could cause a flood situation in the surrounding villages during heavy rain, she complained. When UMC did not respond, Khanchandani complained to the irrigation department and Thane collector. Earlier, this week, the irrigation department directed UMC to "remove the unauthorised constructions and fillings in Ulhas riverbed". Ulhas river, a vital water source for around 50 lakh people in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including Ulhasnagar, Kalyan- Dombivli, Ambernath and Badlapur, remains in news for pollution-related complaints from citizens. In the past, the National Green Tribunal had issued orders to different authorities to address the pollution of Ulhas River. These orders include imposing environmental damage compensation, forming investigation committees, and directing govt bodies to take action.
