
Athachamayam procession to kick off 10-day Onam fete
Law Minister P Rajeeve, Tripunithura MLA K Babu, actors Jayaram and Ramesh Pisharody, Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden, Kottayam MP Francis George, Piravom MLA Anoop Jacob, and Ernakulam District Collector G Priyanka will also be present.
The procession will feature a vibrant display of traditional art forms such as kathakali, theyyam etc, martial arts like kalaripayattu, percussion performances including panchavadyam and shingari melam, folk dances, and fancy dress representing Onam traditions and mythology. Students, Asha workers, Kudumbashree members, Haritha Karma Sena members, and anganwadi workers will participate. The procession will move through the royal town and return to the school ground by 2 pm.
The Atha Pookalam competition will begin at Sion Auditorium at 10 am on August 26. Cultural performances will be held every evening at Layam Koothambalam from August 26 to September 4.

The event typically spans 10 days at the Shri Drona Natya Shala during which several cultural programmes and competitions are organised. Spanning 10 days, the fair hosts a range of cultural events and competitions. The fair opens with rituals and prayers dedicated to Guru Dronacharya, reflecting its deep mythological significance. Over the years, it has grown into a vibrant cultural celebration, featuring lively stalls, folk performances, music, traditional wrestling bouts, and various exhibitions. Alongside its religious importance, the mela has evolved into a grand cultural event. Students will also get a holiday on Ganesh Chaturthi which fall next week Wednesday, August 27. Apart from that, Onam is slated to begin on August 26. Schools are closed across states in India on this occasion.

Govt nod to raise 1,500 crore as loan for LIFE Mission housing
Thiruvananthapuram: State cabinet on Wednesday gave in-principle approval to raise Rs 1,500 crore as a loan with govt guarantee from Hudco through KURDFC for LIFE Mission housing scheme. Of the Rs 1,500 crore, Rs 1,100 crore will be used to provide funds for 1,27,601 houses under construction and Rs 400 crore will be earmarked for housing assistance to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries in gram panchayats where they form the majority of the LIFE list. The borrowing will be spread over two years, with Rs 750 crore each in 2025-26 and 2026-27. The loan repayment will be made over 15 years by deducting from the development fund of local bodies through KURDFC, while govt will bear the annual interest from the budget. Onam gift for Scheduled Tribes: A total of 52,864 Scheduled Tribe members aged above 60 years, excluding pensioners in central, state and semi-govt institutions, will be given Rs 1,000 each as Onam gift in 2025. For this, Rs 5.28 crore will be allocated from chief minister's distress relief fund.
