3 Bangladeshis deported from Malaysia jailed on return home

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail giving details of the militant group to reporters at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
PETALING JAYA : Three Bangladeshi nationals, deported from Malaysia on suspicion of involvement in militant activities, have been arrested and detained after they arrived home on Friday.
They were taken into custody by members of the Bangladesh anti-terrorism unit, produced in court the same day and ordered to be detained, according to the Bangladesh online newspaper bdnews24.com.
Bangladesh anti-terrorism chief Akkas Uddin Bhuiyan was quoted by bdnews24.com as saying that the process of filing cases against the three was under way. The authorities were still verifying their background, he said.
The trio were among 36 detained in Malaysia between May and June for their involvement in a radical militant movement linked to the Islamic State (IS).
Last week, home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said 15 of the 36 had been issued deportation orders, while 16 others are still under investigation for their suspected involvement in the militant movement.
Saifuddin said five were involved in terrorism and had been charged in Shah Alam, Selangor, and Johor.
On Friday, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said the 36 were believed to be part of a militant group comprising between 100 and 150 members, all Bangladeshi migrant workers employed in factories, construction sites, and petrol stations across Malaysia.
The Bangladesh government said today that officials of its high commission in Malaysia were communicating closely with Malaysian authorities.
'Bangladesh once again reiterates its firm stand against all forms of terrorism, violent extremism and militancy and it remains ready to extend full cooperation to the Malaysian authorities in this regard,' the Bangladesh foreign ministry said in a statement.

France-M'sia forge new path

Macron hails Anwar's visit as a success which will boost ties PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron regards Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's visit as a success, given the progress made in jointly reviving partnerships across all sectors. Macron said the rapprochement between the two nations' economies and shared diversification strategies were essential. He was referring to the newly signed project in the critical minerals and rare earths sector with the company Carester, which just opened a plant in Lacq, the historic cooperation between Malaysia Airlines and Airbus when it came to transport, and also in the field of energy transition. 'In South-East Asia, I reiterated our support for regional electricity connectivity, including support for civil nuclear energy. Strong bond: Macron welcoming Anwar for a working dinner at the Elysee Palace in Paris; and (below) Anwar presenting a Quran to the Rector of the Grand Mosque of Paris, Chems-eddine Mohamed Hafiz, during Friday prayers in Paris. — Reuters/Bernama 'I must also mention the exchanges between our artists, researchers, academics, and students – all those who bring the France-Malaysia relationship to life. New agreements are in view to continue weaving this human connection between our countries.' In turn, Anwar said the collaboration among the private sector was why government to government arrangements and exchanges with ministers should continue at the higher level. 'I think we have benefited immensely from the education (sector), the AI, the digital engineering that many of our students have been trained in here. 'We want to further explore. We have now started to get French students into Malaysia, and tourism is also increasing,' he added.

Child among four injured after car crashes into three motorcycles in Kuantan after running red light

KUANTAN, July 6 — Four individuals, including a child, were injured in a road crash involving a car and three motorcycles at a traffic light junction along Jalan Pintasan Bukit Setongkol here yesterday. Acting Kuantan district police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the crash was believed to have occurred when a Perodua Myvi, driven by a 29-year-old man from Tanjung Lumpur, rammed into the motorcycles as they were exiting the junction. 'Initial investigation found that the car continued moving although the traffic light had turned red during the 8.45 pm incident,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Adli said the collision resulted in injuries to four individuals, including two women motorcyclists and a male pillion passenger, aged between eight and 32. The victims were taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here for treatment, and the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving. — Bernama

Confusion over Sabah assembly term clarified as Speaker sets Nov 11 automatic dissolution date, unless called earlier

KOTA KINABALU, July 6 — The 16th Sabah State Legislative Assembly will be automatically dissolved on Nov 11 this year if it is not dissolved earlier, said Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya. He said the five-year term of the assembly is calculated from the date of the first sitting of the 16th Sabah State Assembly, which was on November 12, 2020, making Nov 11 this year the end of the term. He noted that there is some public misunderstanding regarding the date the assembly will automatically dissolve, with some assuming the term began on the polling day of the 16th Sabah State Election on September 26, 2020, or on Sept 22 for early voting. 'There are outsiders who misunderstand the dissolution date. Some count from polling day, others think it starts from the date the elected representatives were sworn in (October 9, 2020). '(In fact) it (the five-year term of the Sabah assembly) is not counted from the polling day, the announcement of the election results, or the swearing-in of assemblymen. It is counted from the date of the first sitting of the new legislative term,' he told Bernama. Kadzim said if the assembly dissolves automatically on Nov 11, Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman and the Election Commission (EC) would be formally notified of the matter. 'An election for the state must then be held within 60 days from the date of dissolution,' he added. Commenting on the upcoming Sabah State Assembly sitting scheduled for two days starting tomorrow, he said four bills will be tabled, covering supplementary supply, state sales tax, forestry, and climate change and carbon governance. 'We normally have at least three sittings a year, so (this time) there's more attention because if the State Assembly dissolves after this, it will be the final sitting of the term. If not, it will be the third sitting this year. Nothing out of the ordinary this time, just a regular sitting,' he said. Kadzim also said that broadcasting the Sabah assembly sitting live on social media, including YouTube, enables the public to follow debates, especially those concerning state policies, without needing to attend in person. 'I think it's better for people to watch it live because our focus is solely on the debates... there are many benefits to live broadcasts,' he said. He added that the live telecast also encourages assemblymen to maintain decorum and proper conduct during proceedings, and ensures quality debates as they are aware they are being observed by the public. 'If I were an assemblyman, I'd also be more disciplined, knowing that I'm being followed live by the public. The good thing is, the coverage will be wider since not everyone can come to the assembly,' he said. He stressed that the Sabah State Assembly building is gazetted as a security zone, and therefore, certain restrictions mu — please observe them,' he said. When asked about the use of artificial intelligence (AI), Kadzim said they have not yet been able to fully utilise the technology due to some limitations, especially regarding language translation. 'If one day AI can be used for legislative sittings, we could use it to assist in our work, including producing the Hansard and so forth,' he said. — Bernama
