Diego Velazquez highlights O'Brien's impressive Curragh treble

Irish Examiner4 days ago
Classy Diego Velazquez bagged his second Group 2 success and retained his unbeaten record on home soil when landing the Romanised Minstrel Stakes, highlight of a Sunday treble for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore.
Close to the pace, set by California Dreamer, the 11/8 favourite hit the front before the furlong-pole and then responded to Moore's handling to hold 25/1 shot East Hampton by a neck.
'This year has been a bit of a mess for him. He got upset in the stalls at Leopardstown and had to be withdrawn. And then the 'Queen Anne' turned into a non-event for him," O'Brien explained.
"A mile is his trip – this seven furlongs was a bit short and the ground a bit easy. But everyone has been happy with him at home and he's a classy horse, powerful and strong, and knuckled down well.'
Described by his rider as 'uncomplicated, with a very good attitude" Diego Velazquez will now step back up to a mile and into Group 1 company, with Goodwood's Sussex Stakes and the Prix Jacques Le Marois possible targets.
Following the withdrawal of morning favourite Signora, Moore switched to Sugar Island in the opening two-year-old fillies maiden. Although a market drifter, drifting out to 9/2, the Dubawi filly delivered in good style to spark the Ballydoyle treble. Having raced prominently, she stayed on to beat fellow debutante Saint Agatha by a half-length.
'She was ready for her first run and was very green," O'Brien commented. "Ryan said that when he asked her to quicken at the two, she found plenty – and that's a good sign. She'll have no problem going a mile this season and should be a lovely filly over a mile and a quarter, or more, next year.'
The Ballydoyle treble was completed when 88-rated Light As Air dug deep to see off Winston Junior in the mile and a half maiden.
Earlier, the Paddy Twomey-trained One Look, stepping-up to a mile and a quarter for the first time, bounced back from her trip to Royal Ascot when taking the Group 3 Al Shira'aa Racing Meadow Court Stakes under Wayne Lordan, sweeping past Azada inside the final furlong to score by a length, with favourite Tasmania coming from last to take third spot.
'She didn't enjoy the clearest passage through, but Wayne looked happy, and she hit the line well,' stated Twomey. 'Ascot didn't work out for her and she appreciated the ten furlongs today, on softer ground.
"We just let her tick over since Ascot. But she's four now and we might run her a bit more. We might look at races like the Blandford, back here, the Romanet and the Opera with her.'
Winning rider Lordan added: 'I sat where I was happy and she travelled quite well. As Billy (Lee) told me, she hit a bit of a flat spot but, when I pulled her out, I knew she'd finish well. She pulled up when she got to the front, but won well.'

Rosallion a massive drifter for the Sussex as Field Of Gold jockey confirmed with Colin Keane banned from Goodwood

SUPERSTAR miler Rosallion is a big drifter for next week's Sussex Stakes at Goodwood - as Field Of Gold's jockey was finally confirmed. Richard Hannon's multiple Group 1 winner has gone right out on the Betfair Exchange. Advertisement 1 Richard Hannon has some big decisions to make on where he runs Rosallion next - but it looks like it may not be in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood Credit: PA He was second-fav for the £1million contest next Wednesday but has been usurped by Aidan O'Brien's Henri Matisse. Rosallion's price on the Exchange has ballooned from 5 (4-1) to 9 (8-1), while he remains a general 7-2 chance on sportsbooks. Hannon - who saw his stable star lose the Queen Anne by a nose on his last run - had said the 7f City Of York at next month's Ebor Festival could be on the cards. But he also said the 1m Prix Jacques Le Marois (worth around £200,000 more to the winner than the City Of York) is a strong possibility too. Advertisement It's very unlikely he would do both given they are less than a week apart, with the French race on August 17 and City Of York August 23. Rosallion's drift came as William Buick was confirmed for the ride on Field Of Gold, who is already as short as 4-9 for the Sussex. Juddmonte's retained rider Colin Keane - who would have been on the top three-year-old - is banned from Goodwood after breaking whip rules at Sandown earlier this month. Buick was previously a jockey at Clarehaven and enjoys a good relationship with the horse's trainer John Gosden. Advertisement Most read in Horse Racing Oisin Murphy has been totally overlooked in light of his Gosden said: "William came in and rode Field Of Gold this morning and if he's free next Wednesday he will ride, providing Godolphin don't supplement one into the race. "They worked nicely together and it's all systems go for Goodwood. "William and I have a long association going back to the pre-Frankie Dettori era." Diego Velazquez digs deep to star in Curragh hat-trick for Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien

The son of Frankel, named after a 17th century Spanish painter was winning for the fifth time in his 10-race career, but was tackling the shortest distance he's encountered since making a winning debut over the same course and distance as a two-year-old. The 11/8 favourite for the Group Two event was always in a handy position under Moore alongside Adrian Murray's Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up California Dreamer. Moore may have been low in the saddle inside the final quarter-mile but he had a willing ally and while several rivals were lining up a furlong from home, it was only David Marnane's 25/1 outsider East Hampton which emerged from to lay down a stern challenge in the closing stages. But Diego Velazquez stuck to his guns and prevailed by a neck from East Hampton at the winning post. 'A mile is probably his trip. We were preparing him for Ascot and we had him in the stalls at Leopardstown, but he got upset and had to be withdrawn (from the Amethyst Stakes) and that upset his Ascot plan,' said O'Brien. 'We'll go back up to a mile now for the Sussex or the Jacques le Marois, something like that. He'll have no problem getting back up to nine furlongs or a mile and a quarter at the end of the season.' The O'Brien-Moore hat-trick was initiated by Sugar Island in the opening juvenile fillies' maiden over seven furlongs. With Moore switching to the daughter of Dubawi following the absence of anticipated favourite Signora, the regally-bred two-year-old was sent off 9/2 and after hitting the front at the furlong pole, she prevailed by half a length from Saint Agatha. O'Brien and Moore added to their tally with Light As Air in the 12-furlong maiden, the 1/2 favourite having previously been seen finishing well down the field in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot. One Look relished a step up in trip when bouncing back to her best in the Curragh's Al Shira'aa Racing Meadow Court Stakes. The four-year-old burst onto the scene at this venue as a two-year-old and has been one of Paddy Twomey's top performers ever since. She began this season in great form, winning the Park Express Stakes at this track before returning to give Porta Fortuna a fright in the Lanwades Stud Stakes, but was disappointing when last seen in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot. Sent off at 100/30 for her first try at 10 furlongs, she relished the return to her beloved Curragh and served a reminder of her class in the hands of Wayne Lordan to deliver a decisive length success over Dermot Weld's Azada. 'It was great to come here and win again at the Curragh. She seems to like the Curragh and is a lovely filly,' said Twomey. 'Ascot didn't work out for her, probably on ground quicker than she'd like and a trip as short as she'd want to go. 'She's in the Nassau, she could run here in the Blandford Stakes on Champions Weekend and races on Arc weekend. We'll have a think and pick our spots.' Queen Of The Bogs (8/1) made every yard of the running to land the closing fillies'maiden for John Murphy and Gary Carroll, while Shane Foley steered Jessica Harrington's Lady In Paris (8/1) to success in the 10-furlong handicap.
