Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said obesity is emerging as a major challenge for the country, and everyone must contribute to this fight against the challenge.Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 79th Independence Day, he warned that according to experts, one in every three people will suffer from obesity in the coming years and reiterated his previous suggestion to buy 10 per cent less oil for cooking."When I speak of fitness, when I speak of sports, I also wish to place before you a matter of concern. Obesity is becoming a very grave crisis for our nation, and every family in our country should take it seriously. We must protect ourselves from obesity."Therefore, while many steps will have to be taken, I had made one small suggestion that every family should resolve that when cooking oil comes into the house, it should be 10 per cent less than usual and its usage should also be 10 per cent less," the prime minister said.Modi further said the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana has freed people from the habit of silently enduring illness and helped them get good healthcare. "When we help senior citizens with more than Rs 5,00,000 for their health needs, it shows our concern for their well-being".He emphasized India 's growing prowess in domestic pharmaceutical innovation and the urgent need to develop new medicines, vaccines, and life-saving treatments entirely in India.Researchers and entrepreneurs were urged to secure patents for new drugs and medical technologies, ensuring that India not only meets its own healthcare needs but also becomes a global hub of medical self-reliance and innovation.

Insurance company told to reimburse liver transplant cost of Medisep beneficiary at non-empanelled hospital
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a landmark ruling, the Permanent Lok Adalat for Public Utility Services has directed the Oriental Insurance Company to reimburse the cost borne by a Medisep beneficiary for liver transplant at a non-empanelled hospital. The complainant, a pensioner, was diagnosed with a chronic liver disease with hepatocellular carcinoma. He underwent a deceased donor liver transplant on July 8, 2022, at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. Though the Medisep scheme came into existence with effect from July 1, 2022, the insurance company had not published the list of empanelled hospitals then, the pensioner said in his complaint. The total hospital expenses was Rs 20,54,901. He also had a health insurance policy issued by New India Assurance. As the claim under Medisep was not allowed, he submitted a claim with New India Assurance and the latter remitted Rs 3,69,367 at the hospital. He paid the balance amount. However, due to chronic ailments, he was hospitalised two times again for which Rs 1,21,656 was spent. These claims too were rejected by Medisep. The Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) submitted that the petitioner was not entitled to claim benefit for treatment at a non-empanelled hospital. Liver transplant was a planned procedure and not an emergency procedure (for which non-empanelled hospitals will be considered). The insurance company rejected the allegation that the list of empanelled hospitals was not published at the time. The case was considered by the Lokpal bench comprising members V N Radhakrishnan and E Mohammed Shereef. The petitioner was represented by advocates S Reghukumar, P Babu and Threya J Pillai. The Lokpal observed that the surgery was done in an emergency situation as there was no alternate option for the petitioner's survival. The insurance firm failed to empanel two private hospitals for transplant surgeries under Cluster-3 of the Medisep Scheme. At the time, the organ of a deceased donor was available only at the hospital where he sought treatment. Hence, the petitioner is entitled for the reimbursement of treatment expenses up to the package cost in Annexure-2 of the scheme. It directed the firm to pay Rs 18 lakh to the petitioner with 6% interest from April 18, 2023, and Rs 10,000 as costs.

Delivering his address on the occasion of 79th Independence Day, Mann remembered the contribution of martyrs including freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Udham Singh, Sukhdev and Lala Lajpat Rai. Speaking about his government's works, he said the 'Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojna', which will start from October 2, will provide a health insurance cover of Rs 10 lakh to each family in the state. He said all government hospitals and 552 private hospitals have been empaneled under this scheme.

Cardiac arrest deaths tripled in last two years in Karnataka, shows data
BENGALURU: Deaths linked to cardiac arrests recorded under Karnataka's Dr Puneeth Rajkumar Hrudaya Jyoti Yojana have almost tripled, surging from 229 in 2023–24 to 608 in 2024–25, according to the state health department data. The number of critical ECG screenings also nearly tripled in the same period — from 2,489 to 6,767. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao shared the figures as an answer during the ongoing monsoon Legislative Council session. The department does not have a total number of heart attacks reported in the state or related deaths outside Dr Puneeth Rajkumar scheme, because heart attacks, so far, were not considered as a 'notifiable' disease. It was only this year during July that the Health Minister announced that cardiac attack related deaths outside hospitals will be declared as 'notifiable'. The minister had announced this after a surge was reported in heart attack cases in the state and a committee was formed to look into sudden cardiovascular events among individuals under 45 years of age. However, a government order regarding the same is not yet issued. Health department officials said that over 75% of the heart attack cases reported involved individuals with more than one cardiac risk factor and that the most contributing factors include obesity, heavy alcohol intake, smoking and high blood pressure. To reduce the risk of sudden heart-related deaths, health department officials said that they are considering expanding CPR training for specific groups such as physical trainers in gyms apart from school and college students and teachers. Additionally, efforts are on to ensure that gyms, malls, and other crowded places are equipped with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to ensure immediate response during cardiac arrests. What is the scheme? The state government launched the Dr Puneeth Rajkumar Hrudaya Jyoti Yojana in October 2023 to provide emergency cardiac care to patients suffering from heart attacks or sudden cardiac issues within the golden hour. The model uses a 'hub-and-spoke' approach - Hubs are established at 16 super-specialty hospitals like Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Kalaburagi. These hubs are connected to 85 spoke centers, encompassing district and taluk hospitals where patients first present. After initial treatment at a spoke, patients requiring advanced care are referred to a hub for specialized interventions. The scheme delivers tenecteplase injections - a clot-busting medication that costs up to Rs 45,000, at free of cost.
