The preliminary hearing of the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) of the ill-fated Air India Jumbo, Kanishka, established that the snapping of communication was 'sudden and abrupt'. The preliminary run was done at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. The spokesman and secretary to the court of inquiry, S N Sharma, said the preliminary run of the tape was 'pretty good and normal'.
Conditions for peace
Tamil groups have set out four basic principles that they say are vital to Tamil interests and which they want recognised in any new proposals for ending the ethnic conflict. Neelan Tiruchelvam, a spokesman for the Tamil United Liberation Front, said the principles were conveyed to the government at peace talks in Thimphu. They are the acceptance of the Tamils as a national minority, recognition of their traditional homelands, the right to self-determination and citizenship and the right to live in Sri Lanka for all Tamils.
Army withdrawn
The Army, which was called in to assist the civil administration in Ahmedabad and Baroda to contain violence in the wake of the anti-reservation agitation, has been withdrawn. It will, however, stand by. The decision to withdraw the 2,000-odd troops was taken at a high-power meeting of state government officials with the Army and police.
Longowal's plan
Harchand Singh Longowal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Longowal) has said that the Akali Dal had decided to organise district-level conferences all over Punjab and parts of Haryana. These will be held from August 1 to 20 to mobilise the masses for the new line of action, to be announced on August 20, for the acceptance of its long-pending demands.

DMK to stage protest against centralised recruitment for Jipmer jobs

Leader of Opposition and DMK convenor R. Siva said his party would stage a protest in front of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (Jipmer) on Friday against the practice of imposing user fee for services and the centralised recruiting policy that would deepen the marginalisation of local job-seekers. In a statement, Mr. Siva expressed concern that, despite the long-pending demand for increased local representation, the institution's adoption of the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) model, based on the AIIMS in Delhi, would further reduce employment prospects for candidates from the region. The DMK leader also took exception to the bilingual (Hindi and English) nature of entrance tests and the special age relaxation offered to Union Government employees, stating that these measures placed Tamil and English-speaking local candidates at a clear disadvantage. He called upon Jipmer authorities to revert to the earlier recruitment system for nursing and Group B and C posts in place of the CRE, and to reserved 50% of posts for domicile job aspirants. According to the DMK leader, Jipmer had, on July 22, announced that recruitment to 454 vacancies for nursing officers, 446 in Puducherry and eight in Yanam, would be held through CRE. He pointed out that when Jipmer conducted its recruitments, many local aspirants had managed to secure remunerative job positions. However, the adoption of a common entrance test will result in local job avenues being opened to candidates across India. 'We will oppose a recruitment model that allows candidates who do not know the local language to enter jobs that require dealing with primarily poor patients and is exclusionary for the unemployed youth in the region', he said. Jipmer, which owes a large part of its success to the access to Puducherry's land, water, and power, should not turn its back on the local people now, Mr. Siva said.

Vijay Deverakonda's 'Kingdom' sparks outrage over portrayal of Sri Lankan Tamils

/ Aug 06, 2025, 09:38PM IST Vijay Deverakonda's latest film 'Kingdom' has ignited widespread protests in Tamil Nadu following allegations it portrays Sri Lankan Tamils in a negative light. Political group Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) led demonstrations in cities like Ramanathapuram, where screenings were disrupted, banners torn down, and police intervened. Kingdom's opening box office success in its first weekend—hasn't prevented the backlash, which raises urgent questions over cultural sensitivity, symbolism, and representation in pan-Indian cinema.

No guarantee of peaceful living under Stalin-led DMK government, says EPS

The people of Tamil Nadu are living in fear under the Stalin-led DMK government as there is no guarantee for their peaceful living, including the police, with a Sub-Inspector getting murdered by thugs at will, says AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami. Addressing the people during his 'Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagahthtai Meetpom' campaign at Kadayanallur on Wednesday, Mr. Palaniswami said Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has failed to concentrate on maintaining law and order in the State despite sharp criticism by the public and repeated complaints from the Opposition parties. Even though drug abuse had been the root cause for most of the dreadful crimes happening in Tamil Nadu, the DMK government has taken no step to crush this drug cartel ever since it assumed office in 2021. Even as multiple power centres were controlling the police, the public has been left at the mercy of the anti-social elements orchestrating heinous crimes like brutal murders, sexual assaults on children and the elderly women and also murder for gain. 'The murder of a Sub-Inspector on Tuesday night is a classic example of the worsening law and order situation in Tamil Nadu now under the incapable leadership of Mr. Stalin. When the police, who have to protect the people, are being murdered, what will happen to innocent people, especially women and children?,' Mr. Palaniswami asked asserting that during his tenure he had given complete freedom to the police to ensure the rule of law. He also came down heavily on the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai for comparing Gujarat with Tamil Nadu in substance abuse and dug smuggling. 'Since you are from Tamil Nadu and heading the State unit of a political party, just concentrate on the wellbeing of your State instead of poking your nose in some other far-off State,' he said. Mr. Palaniswami recalled that Tamil Nadu was peaceful and the Tamils were living in peace during the 31-year-long AIADMK rule as the police were allowed to function as per law. 'There was no heinous crime during our rule. There was no religious and caste clash in Tamil Nadu whenever AIADMK was in power as troublemakers were crushed mercilessly. The religious minorities were safe. Now, the troublemakers are in power and hence the police cannot discharge their duty in accordance with law,' the former Chief Minister said. As Kadayanallur has a huge population of Muslims, he listed the welfare schemes implemented by his government for religious minorities like hike in honorarium for ulemas, allocation of funds for constructing 'Hajj House' in Chennai etc. He also blasted the DMK for increasing taxes payable to the government, power tariff etc. and abandoning various welfare schemes introduced in the AIADMK regime. 'We will reintroduce all these welfare schemes as we will return to power in 2026 with your support,' said Mr. Palaniswami, who also addressed similar meetings at Puliyangudi and Sankarankovil
