DMK to stage protest against centralised recruitment for Jipmer jobs

The Hindu2 days ago
Leader of Opposition and DMK convenor R. Siva said his party would stage a protest in front of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (Jipmer) on Friday against the practice of imposing user fee for services and the centralised recruiting policy that would deepen the marginalisation of local job-seekers.
In a statement, Mr. Siva expressed concern that, despite the long-pending demand for increased local representation, the institution's adoption of the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) model, based on the AIIMS in Delhi, would further reduce employment prospects for candidates from the region.
The DMK leader also took exception to the bilingual (Hindi and English) nature of entrance tests and the special age relaxation offered to Union Government employees, stating that these measures placed Tamil and English-speaking local candidates at a clear disadvantage.
He called upon Jipmer authorities to revert to the earlier recruitment system for nursing and Group B and C posts in place of the CRE, and to reserved 50% of posts for domicile job aspirants.
According to the DMK leader, Jipmer had, on July 22, announced that recruitment to 454 vacancies for nursing officers, 446 in Puducherry and eight in Yanam, would be held through CRE.
He pointed out that when Jipmer conducted its recruitments, many local aspirants had managed to secure remunerative job positions. However, the adoption of a common entrance test will result in local job avenues being opened to candidates across India. 'We will oppose a recruitment model that allows candidates who do not know the local language to enter jobs that require dealing with primarily poor patients and is exclusionary for the unemployed youth in the region', he said.
Jipmer, which owes a large part of its success to the access to Puducherry's land, water, and power, should not turn its back on the local people now, Mr. Siva said.

Parallel govt is being run by IAS officers in Tamil Nadu, says Madras high court

CHENNAI: Expressing its dismay over the volte-face made by the Tamil Nadu govt, against the assurance given to the court that houses, as promised, would be allotted to selected Tamil scholars under the 'Kanmavu Illam Scheme', the Madras high court on Friday remarked that a parallel govt is being run by IAS officers in the state. Such decisions are taken by IAS officers who do not understand the value of such a scheme, Justice N Anand Venkatesh said while adding that the late chief minister of the state, M Karunanidhi, would not have allowed such action. The court made the observations while hearing a plea moved by lyricist R Vairamuthu challenging the allotment of a house under the scheme. However, instead of complying with the assurance given to the court, the govt filed an appeal against the case and a division bench stayed the interim order passed by this court, he added. To this, Justice Anand Venkatesh observed that such acts are done by the IAS offices and that they are running a parallel government. 'Allotting houses to writers is an emotional and sensitive matter. IAS officers do not understand this — they only operate in the tone of authority. If IAS and IPS officers are allowed to run a parallel government, it will lead to serious problems,' the judge warned and adjourned the hearing. At 2.15 pm, when the court resumed its proceedings after lunch, additional advocate general J Ravindran appeared before the court and recorded his strong exception to the observations made by the court. He asserted that the govt is run by chief minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin and not by any bureaucrats. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). NEP vs Tamil Nadu's SEP: Key differences in exams, language, and admissions

Tamil Nadu has launched its very own State Education Policy (SEP), and it's a straight-up rejection of the National Education Policy (NEP) brought in by the Centre. Chief Minister MK Stalin unveiled the new policy with a clear message -- education in Tamil Nadu will follow its own Tamil Nadu SEP was drafted by a 14-member panel led by Justice Murugesan. The policy rejects key NEP provisions, retains the two-language policy, and prioritises science, AI, and what's different between the NEP and SEP? Here's a section-by-section breakdown:1. LANGUAGE POLICY NEP: Proposes a three-language formula, often Hindi, English, and a regional language, across all Tamil Nadu sticks to its long-standing two-language policy — Tamil and student, regardless of whether they study under CBSE, ICSE or state board, must learn Tamil up to Class state has clearly rejected any form of language imposition.2. SCHOOL EXAMINATION SYSTEMNEP: Introduces public board exams in Classes 3, 5, and 8, aiming for regular Completely scraps public exams for Classes 3, 5 and students will be promoted till Class 10, with no fail system in these will be no Class 11 exam intention is to reduce pressure and stop the early commercialisation of education.3. Tamil Nadu will base admissions for arts and science UG courses on a consolidated score from Classes 11 and 12, with no entrance exam required. 4. POSITION ON NEET AND CENTRAL EXAMSNEP: Supports standardised national exams like NEET for medical Strongly opposes NEET. Tamil Nadu has consistently campaigned against it, citing stress and state claims the Centre withheld Rs 2,152 crore in funds (Samagra Shiksha) due to its refusal to adopt NEP and Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin reiterated: 'Even if they give Rs 1,000 crore, Tamil Nadu won't implement NEP. Tamil Nadu doesn't like imposition in any form.'5. CONTROL OF EDUCATIONNEP: Keeps education in the Concurrent List, meaning both Centre and State control Recommends moving education back to the State List, giving full control to the state reflects Tamil Nadu's push for more autonomy in policymaking.6. POLITICAL STAND AND FUNDING APPROACHadvertisementNEP: A centralised national policy that promotes public-private partnerships and varied education models. The Centre positions NEP as a uniform framework for all A state-first policy that firmly rejects central imposition and calls for more direct state investment in public schools and colleges. Tamil Nadu sees education as a state subject and argues for greater local control and public funding to ensure quality and access without over-reliance on private Nadu's SEP is more than just a state document. It's a strong political and educational message that local needs come first, and that student wellbeing matters more than rankings or centralised exams.- Ends

DMK general secretary Duraimurugan questions Palaniswami's ‘silence' over SIR row

DMK general secretary Duraimurugan on Friday (August 8, 2025) questioned the 'silence' of Edappadi K. Palaniswami, AIADMK general secretary and the Leader of the Opposition, over the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. In a statement, he pointed out that the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has 'exposed the issue of creation of fake votes with proof.' Mr. Duraimurugan said the Election Commission of India (ECI) must immediately drop the SIR initiative. He pointed out that with the Assembly elections due in Tamil Nadu next year, the ECI's action will have 'a very significant impact on the State' as well. There is now a threat that in the name of requiring Tamil Nadu voters to prove their eligibility, people could be removed from the voter list, Mr. Duraimurugan alleged. He further alleged that the BJP-led Union government might attempt to indiscriminately add lakhs of people from other States to the Tamil Nadu voter rolls, which amounts to taking away the State's political rights. Mr. Palaniswami is maintaining 'a deceitful silence' on the issue, which poses a grave threat both to democracy and the political rights of the people of Tamil Nadu, thereby betraying the people, Mr. Duraimurugan alleged. 'Having become a 'slave' of the BJP and mortgaged the AIADMK, will Palaniswami dare to mortgage the voters of the State to Delhi,' he asked. 'If those who have failed politically in Tamil Nadu, as well as their masters, dream that they can win through shortcuts, it will never happen. Honorable Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and the people of Tamil Nadu will stand as one team and chase them out,' Mr. Duraimurugan said. In a separate statement, he said Mr. Stalin will chair the meeting of the DMK district secretaries at Anna Arivalayam on August 13.
