No guarantee of peaceful living under Stalin-led DMK government, says EPS

The Hindu21 hours ago
The people of Tamil Nadu are living in fear under the Stalin-led DMK government as there is no guarantee for their peaceful living, including the police, with a Sub-Inspector getting murdered by thugs at will, says AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
Addressing the people during his 'Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagahthtai Meetpom' campaign at Kadayanallur on Wednesday, Mr. Palaniswami said Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has failed to concentrate on maintaining law and order in the State despite sharp criticism by the public and repeated complaints from the Opposition parties.
Even though drug abuse had been the root cause for most of the dreadful crimes happening in Tamil Nadu, the DMK government has taken no step to crush this drug cartel ever since it assumed office in 2021.
Even as multiple power centres were controlling the police, the public has been left at the mercy of the anti-social elements orchestrating heinous crimes like brutal murders, sexual assaults on children and the elderly women and also murder for gain.
'The murder of a Sub-Inspector on Tuesday night is a classic example of the worsening law and order situation in Tamil Nadu now under the incapable leadership of Mr. Stalin. When the police, who have to protect the people, are being murdered, what will happen to innocent people, especially women and children?,' Mr. Palaniswami asked asserting that during his tenure he had given complete freedom to the police to ensure the rule of law.
He also came down heavily on the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai for comparing Gujarat with Tamil Nadu in substance abuse and dug smuggling.
'Since you are from Tamil Nadu and heading the State unit of a political party, just concentrate on the wellbeing of your State instead of poking your nose in some other far-off State,' he said.
Mr. Palaniswami recalled that Tamil Nadu was peaceful and the Tamils were living in peace during the 31-year-long AIADMK rule as the police were allowed to function as per law. 'There was no heinous crime during our rule. There was no religious and caste clash in Tamil Nadu whenever AIADMK was in power as troublemakers were crushed mercilessly. The religious minorities were safe. Now, the troublemakers are in power and hence the police cannot discharge their duty in accordance with law,' the former Chief Minister said.
As Kadayanallur has a huge population of Muslims, he listed the welfare schemes implemented by his government for religious minorities like hike in honorarium for ulemas, allocation of funds for constructing 'Hajj House' in Chennai etc. He also blasted the DMK for increasing taxes payable to the government, power tariff etc. and abandoning various welfare schemes introduced in the AIADMK regime.
'We will reintroduce all these welfare schemes as we will return to power in 2026 with your support,' said Mr. Palaniswami, who also addressed similar meetings at Puliyangudi and Sankarankovil

Turkish foreign minister in Damascus for talks with Syria's Sharaa, source says

* Turkish foreign minister in Damascus for talks with Syria's Sharaa, source says Turkey pledges support for Syria's reconstruction and security * Talks to address Turkey's security concerns over northeast Syria * Fidan, Sharaa to discuss Israel's actions threatening Syria's stability ANKARA, - Turkey's foreign minister will hold talks with Syria's president in Damascus on Thursday to assess bilateral ties, tensions between Syria and Israel, and recent clashes between a Kurdish-led group and the Syrian government, a Turkish Foreign Ministry source said. NATO member Turkey has emerged as one of Syria's main foreign allies after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad last year. It has pledged to help rebuild the war-torn country, train and advise its armed forces, and support it in the international arena. The source said Syria's reconstruction would be among the top agenda items during Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's meeting with President Ahmed al-Sharaa, in addition to Ankara's security concerns over recent violence in Syria. "The talks are expected to assess Turkey's national security concerns stemming from northeast Syria, as well as cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorist organisations... at a time when preserving Syria's territorial integrity and unity is more important than ever," the source said. Ankara considers the Kurdish-led, U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces a terrorist organisation. It has repeatedly said the SDF, which controls much of northeast Syria, must abide by an agreement it signed with Damascus in March to integrate into the Syrian state apparatus, while also providing technical, advisory and military support to Syria to increase its defence capabilities and fight Islamic State militants. Fidan's visit follows clashes this week between the SDF and Syrian government forces in Manbij and Aleppo, and weeks of tensions between Israel and Syria over fighting between Druze and Bedouin forces last month, which Ankara has described as an Israeli sabotage attempt against efforts to achieve stability in Syria. Fidan, who has said Israel aimed to fragment Syria and that Ankara would not allow this, will also discuss "the actions and rhetoric of Israel that pose a threat to Syria and the region's stability", the source said. ‘His brain has been stolen': Maharashtra CM Fadnavis hits out at Rahul Gandhi over voter fraud claims

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputy Eknath Shinde on Thursday dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegations that the 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections were 'stolen', accusing him of spreading falsehoods to mislead the public. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis rejects Rahul Gandhi's claim that the Maharashtra assembly polls were 'stolen". Fadnavis, speaking to reporters near Panaji, said Gandhi's remarks were baseless and laced with personal attacks. 'I feel that, may be, he (Gandhi) should get it (brain) checked,' he said. 'Either his brain has been stolen or a chip in his brain is missing. That is why he is making such statements often,' PTI quoted Fadnavis as saying. The Maharashtra chief minister was in Goa to attend an event as the chief guest. Meanwhile, in an interview with PTI, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde said, 'With his false allegations, Rahul Gandhi is trying to create a perception, but it won't be accepted by the people.' Their remarks came after Gandhi, addressing reporters at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, claimed that the Maharashtra election results confirmed the Congress party's suspicion that the polls had been manipulated. 'Not giving machine-readable voter list convinced us that the Election Commission (EC) colluded with BJP to 'steal' elections in Maharashtra,' alleged the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He further said, 'They said we are going to destroy the CCTV footage. This was surprising to us because there was a question in Maharashtra about a massive voting after 5.30 pm for the numbers to add up. Our people knew that in the polling booths, no such thing happened. There was no massive voting after 5.30 pm.' 'These two things made us believe with reasonable certainty that the Election Commission of India was colluding with the BJP to steal elections,' Gandhi added. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance had secured a sweeping victory in the November 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections, winning 230 of the 288 seats. The BJP alone bagged 132, followed by allies Shiv Sena and NCP with 57 and 41 seats, respectively. In contrast, the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) performed poorly, with Congress winning only 16 seats, Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP) 10, and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) 20. Gandhi also alleged irregularities in the voter list in Karnataka, claiming a 'vote chori' of over 1,00,000 votes in one constituency. He cited 11,965 duplicate entries, 40,009 fake or invalid addresses, 10,452 single-address voters, 4,132 invalid photos, and 33,692 instances of misuse of Form 6. In response, the Karnataka chief electoral officer asked Gandhi to submit a signed declaration with the names of the allegedly excluded or ineligible voters. Gandhi replied, 'What I say to the people is my word. Take it as an oath. This is their (EC) data, and we are displaying their data.'
