State-of-the-art diagnostic centre for breast cancer opens in city
Established as a city branch of the Chennai Breast Centre, the facility equipped with cutting edge technology will seek to enhance the accuracy of breast cancer detection, especially in dense breast tissue, while minimising unnecessary callbacks and biopsies.
Opening the centre at Lenin Street, Mr. Rangasamy noted that breast cancer was one of the leading health concerns among women today, and early detection is critical to saving lives. He hoped that the availability of advanced diagnostic technologies in Puducherry will greatly benefit women in the region.
Selvi Radhakrishna, founder, Chennai Breast Centre, said setting up a Puducherry branch was part of the mission to provide accessible, affordable, and world-class breast health care to every woman. 'With our new centre in Puducherry, we hope to empower more women with timely screenings, expert consultations, and holistic support', said Dr Radhakrishna.
The centre, which will pilot the Hologic 3D Tomosynthesis Mammogram with Genius AI capabilities in the city, will offer full spectrum of services—from routine breast screening to complex breast diagnostic services, aftercare and follow up. The level of services, comparable to the main centre, will obviate the need for women patients to travel to Chennai, a press note said.
N Ananthakrishnan, Emeritus Professor of Surgery and Health Professions Education, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Asha Oumachigu, gynaecologist and Mohammed Ziauddin, consultant participated.
The centre also plans to run awareness drives and screening camps in partnership with local health authorities and NGOs, the press note added.

AIADMK seeks new reservation norm for NEET-qualified government school students
AIADMK secretary A. Anbalagan has urged the government to change the horizontal reservation norms for NEET qualifying students who studied in government schools, which would expand the benefit to a larger pool of aspirants. The AIADMK leader pointed out that at present, the 10% reservation being provided as a reservation in medical education was only applicable to students studying in government schools from Class 1 to 12. This resulted in students who did not study in government schools from Class 1 to 12 being unable to get admission in medical education, even if they have passed the NEET exam. He urged Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to change the norm to include students who study in government schools from Class 8 to 12 and pass the NEET exam in the 10% reservation category. This year, while 1,432 Puducherry students have passed the NEET exam, only 29 government school students enrolled for medical education against the 37 seats allocated under the quota for this category, he said. At present, there are a total of 138 medical seats reserved by the government in various categories, including general medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, etc. The government spends crores of rupees every year on subsidising medical education relating to allottees of these seats, including 21 seats in PIMS, 49 seats in Manakula Vinayagar Medical College, 54 seats in Venkateshwaraa Medical College, and 14 seats in Indira Gandhi Government Medical College. Mr. Anbalagan also wanted the Puducherry government to follow the example of Tamil Nadu in insisting on a bond from students joining medical education on the reservation quota. In the absence of the compulsions of such a formal bond, no specialist doctors, who benefited from the reservation benefit, were volunteering to serve in government hospitals of their own accord, he said. In many states, including Tamil Nadu, medical students sign an agreement with the government when they join medical higher education, stating that they will work in government-provided salaries for two to three years after completing their medical higher education. Therefore, as is the case in various states, including Tamil Nadu, the government should take appropriate steps to sign an agreement, the AIADMK leader said.

Nutrition packs for HIV patients, including children
The Health department will distribute monthly nutrition supplement packs to an estimated 1,256 People Living with HIV and Children Living with HIV through the Pondicherry AIDS Control Society (PACS). This was among the initiatives declared at a combined meeting convened by PACS of the State Council on AIDS and the Legislative Forum on AIDS (LFA) that was presided by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy. According to a press note, the nutrition supplement packets, each costing ₹1,250, would be provided every month to the target beneficiaries. The implementation of the scheme is estimated to cost the Health department about ₹15,70,000 per month and ₹1,88,40,000 annually. Tanzin Dikid, Deputy Director General (IEC), National AIDS Control Organisation, Government of India, New Delhi, in his keynote address, outlined the thrust areas of the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP). Speaker R. Selvam, Jayanta Kumar Ray, Health Secretary, S. Sevvel, Health Director and other officials participated. It was also decided to extend funeral assistance of ₹15,000 to the spouse/relatives of Persons living with HIV/AIDS who are residents of Puducherry. Accounting for an average of two funerals per month, this scheme will receive a financial allocation of ₹3,75,000 per year. An annual educational scholarship for Children of PLHIVs in the Union Territory of Puducherry has also been instituted. Accordingly, students of classes 1 to 5 will get ₹5,000, students of classes 6 to 8 a sum of ₹10,000, while those studying in classes 9 to 12 will receive an aid amount of ₹15,000 and students of degree/higher studies an annual assistance of ₹20,000. It is expected that about 100 students will stand to benefit from this scheme every year. The annual expenditure is estimated to be ₹16,50,000 towards running the scheme. It has also been decided at the meeting to provide Patient Care Allowance (PCA) to all 80 contractual staff of PACS on a par with regular health staffs of Government of Puducherry. Accordingly, each staff of PACS is entitled for a monthly Patient Care Allowance of ₹4,100 and an annual budget of ₹39,36,000 has to be allocated for this allowance, the press note said.
