AIADMK seeks new reservation norm for NEET-qualified government school students

The Hindu6 days ago
AIADMK secretary A. Anbalagan has urged the government to change the horizontal reservation norms for NEET qualifying students who studied in government schools, which would expand the benefit to a larger pool of aspirants.
The AIADMK leader pointed out that at present, the 10% reservation being provided as a reservation in medical education was only applicable to students studying in government schools from Class 1 to 12. This resulted in students who did not study in government schools from Class 1 to 12 being unable to get admission in medical education, even if they have passed the NEET exam.
He urged Chief Minister N. Rangasamy to change the norm to include students who study in government schools from Class 8 to 12 and pass the NEET exam in the 10% reservation category.
This year, while 1,432 Puducherry students have passed the NEET exam, only 29 government school students enrolled for medical education against the 37 seats allocated under the quota for this category, he said.
At present, there are a total of 138 medical seats reserved by the government in various categories, including general medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, etc. The government spends crores of rupees every year on subsidising medical education relating to allottees of these seats, including 21 seats in PIMS, 49 seats in Manakula Vinayagar Medical College, 54 seats in Venkateshwaraa Medical College, and 14 seats in Indira Gandhi Government Medical College.
Mr. Anbalagan also wanted the Puducherry government to follow the example of Tamil Nadu in insisting on a bond from students joining medical education on the reservation quota. In the absence of the compulsions of such a formal bond, no specialist doctors, who benefited from the reservation benefit, were volunteering to serve in government hospitals of their own accord, he said.
In many states, including Tamil Nadu, medical students sign an agreement with the government when they join medical higher education, stating that they will work in government-provided salaries for two to three years after completing their medical higher education.
Therefore, as is the case in various states, including Tamil Nadu, the government should take appropriate steps to sign an agreement, the AIADMK leader said.

AIADMK subservient to BJP, DMK is fighting for Tamils, says Stalin

CHENNAI: DMK president and Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday charged that while the AIADMK has become subservient to the BJP by meekly surrendering to it, the DMK has been passionately standing against 'its anti-Tamil and anti-human' machinations. The DMK president, in a letter to the party cadre ahead of the death anniversary of former CM M Karunanidhi on August 7, targeted both the AIADMK and its ally, the BJP. '(Edappadi) Palaniswami, who lacks any basic ideologies, has knelt before the BJP and forged an alliance, much to the disgust of genuine cadre of the AIADMK. Besides leaning on the wrong place (for political alliance), Palaniswami has been unleashing a malicious campaign in his tour,' Stalin said. Taking on the BJP, the DMK president said while the saffron party continues to 'murder democracy using governors', the Tamil Nadu government, through its legal battle, has established that the popular government in the state is more powerful than the governors.

OPS keeps options open for alliance, asks followers to expose BJP, DMK

CHENNAI: Keeping his options open for alliance for facing 2026 election, former chief minister O Panneerselvam on Sunday directed his followers not to speculate about alliance. However, OPS asked his followers to expose the 'anti-Tamil Nadu activities of the central government' as well as the problems faced by the people from the DMK government. This statement of Panneerselvam indicates that he is weighing his options for the poll alliance. A few days ago, after holding discussions with Chief Minister M K Stalin for about 30 minutes, he triggered speculations about aligning with the DMK with his remarks: 'There are no permanent foes or friends in politics. That has been the history. When the elections approach, anything can happen.' In a statement, Panneerselvam said after the demise of former CM J Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK has been losing its credibility among the people, facing recurring defeats at the hustings. 'We have been struggling to retrieve the AIADMK from a 'group of betrayers' by establishing the AIADMK Cadres' Rights Retrieval Committee with the hope to win the cases pending before the courts,' he added. Panneerselvam directed his supporters to organise public meetings to expose the 'anti-Tamil Nadu activities of the centre' and the problems faced by the people from the current regime in the state, besides how the AIADMK is being led on a destructive path. However, he did not name Edappadi K Palaniswami. Meanwhile, AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran on Sunday told the media that the national leaders of the BJP in New Delhi should make efforts to bring Panneerselvam back into the NDA-fold. Dhinakaran also said Panneerselvam should withdraw his decision to leave the NDA. Talking to reporters in Chennai and Madurai, Panneerselvam showed the messages he sent to BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran about his wish to meet PM Narendra Modi, who visited Tamil Nadu recently. Already, Nagenthran had said that he indeed approached Panneerselvam a day ahead of the PM's visit to TN, but the latter could not be reached. PMK founder's allegations are inconsistent: Anbumani camp

A day after Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S Ramadoss filed a complaint against his son, party leader and former Union minister Anbumani Ramadoss, alleging eavesdropping through a bugging device placed at his residence, the latter's supporters defended him. The father and son have announced separate general council meetings on August 17 and August 9 respectively, leaving party cadre in a tough spot. (File photo) Party spokesperson K Balu, recently removed from his post as president of Samooga Needhi Peravai, the advocates' forum founded by Ramadoss, said that the PMK founder has been inconsistent and made various contradictory statements on the eavesdropping issue. 'If you see, first he said he doesn't know who has installed a bugging device in his house, then he said event media houses may have installed, yesterday he said Anbumani has installed,' Balu told reporters. 'We will wait for the investigation. That will bring out the truth.' Anbumani has so far not issued any response to his father's allegations. Meanwhile, the father and son have announced separate general council meetings on August 17 and August 9 respectively, leaving party cadre in a tough spot. 'If there is a son who spied on his own father, it is Anbumani,' Ramadoss said on Saturday. 'He has eavesdropped on me. I have filed a complaint with the police about the bugging device found in my house. We have handed over the equipment to the police. I have also hired a special agency to find out who is behind this,' added the PMK founder. Ramadoss also dismissed the General council meeting convened by his son as illegal. After Ramadoss called on chief minister and DMK president MK Stalin on Saturday to inquire about the latter's health post his recent hospitalisation episode, there was reportedly speculation that he would seek an alliance with the ruling party in the lead-up to the 2026 assembly elections. PMK has historically shifted allegiances constantly between the DMK and AIADMK. An influential party in Tamil Nadu with a 5% core vote bank from the Vanniyar community, it is presently a key ally of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Disagreements between the father and son over party leadership flared up in December 2024. On May 29, Ramadoss said that he wanted the party to align with the AIADMK but that Anbumani insisted that they remain in the also said that he regretted making Anbumani a Union minister (in the UPA-I government) when the latter was only 35 years old. Ramadoss also said in his May 29 interview that he had realised Anbumani's intentions to take over the party during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in ceremony in 2014, when the latter told him that he would take care of the party. Ambumani was made president of the PMK in 2023. To be clear, Ramadoss was only confirming on record what has been known off the record ever since the AIADMK left the BJP in 2023 before patching up this April. After the split, those in the NDA including PMK stayed with the BJP, with only the DMDK (Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam) taking the AIADMK's side. On April 11, the 85-year-old patriarch again took over the party from Anbumani. He declared himself president and announced that Anbumani would be its working president. The following day, Union home minister Amit Shah, during a campaign visit to the state, announced that the BJP and AIADMK had resolved their differences and would fight the 2026 elections together.
