Who is Qatari royal Sheikha Asma Al Thani?
A mountaineer by passion, Sheikha Asma Al Thani is a member of the ruling family of Qatar. She has been a pioneer for Qatari women and is deputed as the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Qatar Olympic Committee. Her love for mountaineering has earned her several records, including being the first Qatari woman to summit Mount Everest.
She has also partnered with the UNHCR, waving their flag to raise her voice and concern for the refugees. After her expedition to Mount Everest in June 2022, she shared in her post, 'As I was pushing my limits to reach the top, I couldn't help but think of the millions of refugees who embark on dangerous journeys to reach safety. More than 100 million people around the world have been forced out of their homes by conflict, violence, and persecution. An alarming reality and a sad milestone we never wanted to reach."
The UNHCR describes her as 'an adventurer at heart and a humanitarian by nature'.
In her passion and love for mountaineering, she has recently summited Nanga Parbat, also known as the 'Killer Mountain'. Located in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region, the peak is 8,126 metres high. It is one of the deadliest mountain peaks to climb, given the harsh weather conditions.
Before this achievement, she had climbed Mount Everest, K2, and Makalu. On all her expeditions, she displays her advocacy for refugees. In one of her previous posts, she wrote, 'Every time I raise the UNHCR flag on a summit, I think of the more than 120 million people around the world who've been forced to flee their homes."

Hundreds of historic tall ships heading for Amsterdam for maritime festival
Agency: Amsterdam, Aug 20 (AP) A flotilla of hundreds of historic ships was heading into Amsterdam on Wednesday, kicking off a five-day festival celebrating the Dutch capital's maritime history. Vessels from all over the world, their masts and rigging decorated with flags, left the North Sea coastal town of Ijmuiden to begin their hours-long journey up the North Sea Canal and into Amsterdam's Ij waterway for SAIL 2025, the first edition in a decade. A puff of orange smoke erupted into the sky and ships' horns sounded as the replica three-masted clipper Stad Amsterdam passed through a lock to mark the official start of the event. Each ship is greeted with two cannon shots and its country's national anthem as it enters the harbour. Hundreds of smaller vessels packed the waterways to watch the ships pass. The event, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, is held every five years. The 2020 edition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wednesday's parade culminates in an evening fireworks display. The ships will remain in Amsterdam, many open for visitors, through the weekend. The first event was first held in 1975 to celebrate Amsterdam's 700th anniversary and this year's edition coincides with the city's 750th birthday. Chennai: NHAI Clears Six-Lane Flyover From Poonamallee To Maduravoyal, Full Details Inside
Last Updated: One lane will be used for piling and pier works, while 10 lanes, including service lanes, will remain open. Vehicles entering Chennai from Bengaluru, Krishnagiri, and Vellore will soon get much-needed relief. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has cleared the construction of a six-lane elevated corridor from Poonamallee to Maduravoyal, stretching 8.1km at a cost of Rs 1,250 crore. As per TOI, the project, tendered earlier this week, will feature entry and exit points only at its ends and will be toll-charged. According to NHAI officials, work is expected to begin within three months, with a completion timeline of two-and-a-half years. How Will It Change Travel? Currently, the Poonamallee–Maduravoyal stretch sees around 90,000 vehicles every day, causing long delays at busy junctions. Once complete, the new flyover is expected to transform travel time into the city. In the future, this corridor will connect with another planned 13km stretch from Outer Ring Road (ORR) to Sriperumbudur. Together, the two routes will enable commuters to cover 22km in less than 20 minutes, compared to the current one-hour slog. Project director I S Janakumaran assured that traffic movement will not be heavily affected. Construction will take place by closing one lane at a time, while leaving 10 lanes, including service lanes, open for vehicles. The Chennai Port is also expected to benefit, as the corridor will support faster cargo movement, making full use of its 135 MTPA handling capacity. Local residents have welcomed the project but voiced concerns about delays and service lanes. Many feel that the three-year construction timeline is too long and want NHAI to speed up the work while also improving service roads. Some also demanded early connectivity with the 262km Chennai–Bengaluru Expressway, so that commuters benefit immediately once the larger highway opens. This is not an isolated project. NHAI has already completed an 84km stretch of National Expressway-7 in Bengaluru, with further works underway in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The ambitious upgrades are expected to finish by 2026. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Amit Shah Vs Opposition: Bill To Remove PM, CMs Over Criminal Cases Sparks Big Lok Sabha Ruckus
Shah objected strongly to Venugopal and said he resigned as the Gujarat home minister on moral grounds and did not take any constitutional post until he was cleared of all charges The Lok Sabha on Wednesday witnessed a massive showdown between the treasury bench and the opposition after Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced new bills that provide for the removal of the prime minister or chief ministers arrested on serious criminal charges. MPs, including Asasduddin Owaisi, Manish Tewari, NK Premchandran, Dharmendra Yadav and KC Venugopal, opposed the bill, calling it 'anti-constitutional". The three bills have been sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further deliberation. Amid massive protests by the opposition, Congress MP KC Venugopal asked Shah whether he resigned on moral grounds when he was the home minister of Gujarat. 'BJP people are saying this is to bring morality in politics. Can ask a question to the home minister when he was the home minister of Gujarat, he had been arrested, whether he took the morality to resign," the Lok Sabha MP from Kerala's Alappuzha said. Shah objected strongly to Venugopal and said he resigned as the Gujarat home minister on moral grounds and did not take any constitutional post until he was cleared of all charges by the courts. Opposing the bills, Owaisi said they violate the principle of separation of powers and undermine the right of the people to elect a government. 'It gives executive agencies a free run to become judge and executioner based on flimsy allegations and suspicions…This government is hell-bent on creating a Police State. This will be a death nail unleashed on the elected government. India's Constitution is being amended to turn this country into a Police State," he added. Three bills— are the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025; the Constitution (One Hundred And Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025– were introduced in Lok Sabha that seeks to remove the prime minister, a Union minister, a chief minister or a minister of a state or Union Territory when arrested or detained on serious criminal charges for 30 days. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
